ATC - Giraffes

Giraffes

Hello one, hello all...

I will be your host this evening (and for the rest of the month). My name is Tania and I'm very excited about hosting this Trade because it's my first time doing so and because Giraffes are my favorite animal.

First things first... The all important TOPIC - GIRAFFES
I know at first glance it may seem like once you've drawn a giraffe, that is it - but that is honestly not the case. There is so much variety out there.
The 'real/organic' Giraffe is flawless in all it's beauty and glory as it grazes in the gorgeous African sun, with it's fascinating coat glistening in the light and shadows of the tall trees, many times with baby at her side. (what a sight in real life!!)
The fluffy and cuddly Giraffe has become a favorite among 'teddy bears' - I myself love them to bits and have numerous fluffy giraffe toys which are so much fun to draw!!
There is the African/bushman style Giraffe which so many people have fallen in love with due to it's very definite lines and striking colours!!

There are many more which I haven't mentioned, which I am leaving completely and entirely up to you.

Another reason why I've chosen this theme is because there is a guy in Norway who needs to collect 1 000 000 Giraffes - go to this link in DS 1 000 000 Giraffes! and to the actual site here : One Million Giraffes
If we have the total amount of traders joining (20) and we at least draw one Giraffe on each card, that will be 361 Giraffes - obviously if you draw a herd of Giraffes on a card that number will increase!

I am looking forward to this trade and hope that all of you can join in!!

Here are the game rules:
- Sign-up start today (19 Nov 2009) and will be open for one week and close on the 26th of November 2009.
- The trade will then begin on the 27th of November and will end on new years eve... 31st December 2009.
- Once you have signed up, please PM me your Name and Postal Address, which I will in turn PM to all the traders after the sign up is complete.
- This is a drawing challenge where any medium is welcome - please no computer art!
- The dimensions for the cards are as follows : 2.5 x 3.5 inches or 6.35 x 8.89 cm
- Please ensure that when you post out your cards you have the address correctly written (or even easier - printed) on the front and your address on the back, if for whatever reason the card does not reach it's destination, then at least the Post Office will know where to send it back to and doesn't disappear into the great black hole!!

Let the trading begin...

Here are the Peeps joining in on the African Sun Fun with Giraffes :

TaniaBee
dolphin-paradise
bigs

Finished Painting Storage

Is there a way to store finished panels or canvases in a type of box or bag? I don't really want to use shelves or anything that leaves the artwork out in the open. I was thinking of something like a wet panel box, but a wet panel box is meant for temporary storage and I wanted something like that, but permanent storage even after it dries. Maybe closed storage isn't good for the painting but I don't know nothing bout that.

Pencils: Faber Castell 9000 vs Staedtler Mars Lumograph?

What do you think of the above pencils (Faber Castell 9000 vs Staedtler Mars Lumograph) as the only medium for drawing? I will be drawing mainly landscapes and portraits. Will be using grades from 6H to 8B.

Am I correct in my impression that at least with the current production the Faber Castell 9000 is one to two grades harder than the Staedtler Lumograph? In other words to me the Staedtler Lumograph HB feels about the same as a Faber Castell 9000 2B pencil.

Also what do you think of Derwent Graphic, Sanford/Prismacolor Turquoise and Tombow Mono Professional (not 100) pencils?

What is your favourite pencil brand for drawing and sketching?

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Hany.

SHARING : 5: H CRAIG HANNA

From time to time I received interesting news on sites and/or artists. I want to share with you. Each new site is given in the title of the topic.
An

5. H CRAIG HANNA.

If you have time, I would suggest you to read about the American painter H Craig Hanna. Craig is exposing his works at the gallery Laurence Esnol in Paris. I came yesterday and found a great number of recent works, of great quality. There are a large number of red dots (sold) on the tableaux. For the (difficult) time being, this success is really exceptional. I bought a book on him but cannot take the photos and show them to you.

In the internet, you can see a lot of references on Craig. Here is a an example :
http://www.laurenceesnolgallery.com/pdf/La...g_Hanna_top.pdf
You can find a very beautiful portrait which has been exposed in the celebrated National Portrait Gallery in London.

4. LUIS GASPARETTO, painting in trance

Luiz Gasparetto was born in 1949 in Brazil, to a modest family. At age of 13, he painted a superb tableau, that clearly reminds Claude Monet. A kind of medium painting, as if he were in communication with artists in the past. Then he continued to produce a large number of paintings that, in lines, forms, colours and style, strangely remind those of great known artists, like Leonard de Vinci, Michel Ange, Toulouse Lautrec and others. Several videos have been taken when he drew: each time, he entered in trance and drew very quickly, sometimes with both hands, and not even looking at the paper. He could draw also with his feet. Up to now, Luiz has realized more than 2400 tableaux. He gave the totality of his production to charitable associations.
Here are two typical videos. You can learn more from Luiz in Google.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhL4C78_YQs...player_embedded
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtVKjbaSQfo...player_embedded
%%%%%

3: A blind artist paints in colour and with perspective.

Esref Armagan was born unsighted to a modest family. He has never received any formal schooling or training in drawing. However, he draws and paints amazingly, with colour and perspective, by using his hands and fingers.

On Google, by typing ‘Esref Armagan’, you can have a considerable number of references on him. You must see some docs to try to understand and to make up your ideas.

Here is a video :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QUOy83po60
And here is a short bibliography and some works from the artist :
http://www.armagan.com/paintings.asp

2. A marvellous huge painting in the museum of Shanhghai.
This huge painting (height 5.28 meter, length 24.8 meter) is one of the most famous art work of China, realised during the years 1085-1145 of the Song dynasty and continued during the Qong dynasty.
People queue for hours at the Shanghai museum to admire the work.
Turn on your sound and click on the link below to visit.
Move the mouse right or left to change the direction of the movement.
You can lower the speed of the displacement by moving the mouse towards the centre.
Take time to visit the art work totally.
In a second visit, each time you see a square, click in it to see more and listen to the music.
Best wish,
Let a word to thank me for the link, he he….
An

http://www.npm.gov.tw/exh96/orientation/flash_4/index.html

1.
ATC Trade October-November

(Fans of Alfred Hitchcock - please read the following in your best "Hitchcockian" voice)

Good evening....

I am your humble host for the October-November ATC trade. It is my hope that you will find this trade interesting, fun and a little scary. As for the subject....

You know who they are. You first met them as a child. They hid in your closet. They waited for you under the bed, always ready to reach out with a hairy paw and grab you. On windy nights, they tap tap tapped on your window with a bony claw sending you running to your mommy's room as fast as your pajama-clad feet could carry you.

The monsters.

They were real, weren't they? Even when your mum took you back to your room and showed you that there were no monsters, it was only a branch tapping at the window, that nothing was in the closet or under the bed, you knew they were hiding - just waiting to come back. Soon the other children told you too that monsters were make-believe, just like Santa Claus, and you said that you knew that and you didn't REALLY believe in monsters.

But did you? Do you still check under the bed? Do you turn on a light before you reach into the closet? Of course, because you know they will return.

They have returned - the theme for your ATC trade is your old friends - the monsters. No camera required. No research necessary. You know them. You know what they look like. Come and draw them!

They have missed you.

Now for the technical stuff:
Sign up begins tonight and if the monsters don't get you will end Saturday night. We will then begin drawing and trading until November 14th or so. Please use the standard size art trading card to draw your monsters on. I believe the dimensions are 2.5 x 3.5 inches or 6.35 x 8.89 cm. You may work in any medium you wish - monsters are flexible and love to be depicted in different ways. Only art that is drawn by you is to be submitted into the trade-no computer art please. Really, computers can't capture the real look of monsters. As you sign up, please pm your mailing address to me (ncgirl) and at the end of the sign up, I'll send them out to the group. If I've forgotten any technical stuff, let me know, I'll put it on later posts.

Let's go!

Traders are as follows:

chomaee
jimm2003
bigs
dolphin-paradise
katdyd
rhemoria
Frithy
Mindy
shadow2b63

Painting With Acrylics (help me)

I have been taking the free drawing lessons on this site for a couple months and when I saw the new painting lessons, I immediately started on them. I am currently on Part 3 (Y07) of Painting With Acrylics and wanted to discuss it with someone regarding the color scheme. The link shown below.

drawspace.com/lessons/lesson.php?id=y07

In the background, darker values of violet (or purple) at the top blend or fade down to lighter values of blue. It looks to me like 4 or 5 colors are being used. Possibly a couple analogous colors, since they seem to have harmony. It also looks like these colors are not very intense or bright. If so, is lack of intensity or brightness what helps these very dark values blend or fade into very light values, making it so discreet?

Also, to help me understand the color scheme, in a close up of that same area I can also see a couple dull colors. I am wondering if a blue or violet has been mixed with complimentary colors to make these dull colors. These dull colors also lack intensity, making them fit in with the analogous colors.

This is my first topic. I have never painted anything in my life so I could be all wrong. That is just what it looks like to me and I just wanna know what someone else sees when they look at the painting, regarding the color scheme or anything else.

Just a little question

Hey, so prehaps this is a little bit of a redundant question/problem, but anyway I should like to hear your suggestions in which to overcome it.

Basically I pretty much finished my current plans for art education, which was Fine Art, A level that I took for two years and finished in May of this year. That I know isn't a permenant plan; I will take Art further at some point but for now I have no plans for it and my question is this, How can I continue to improve without the guidence and/or physical grading system that is present in a classroom environment?

I have been drawing for quite a while and I know I'm not perfect, my main vice being that I always sucumb to drawing celebraties from pictures, which I have heard (depending on who you ask) is not the best way to improve, but in retrospect when I do produce something original, I feel like I'm drawing the same old thing. I need to come out of the comfort of drawing people all the time and move on to something else, the only thing is that I am yet to come across anything that I am motivated to draw. I did start a project based around landscapes and archetechture, for example, but it now feels more like work than it does pleasure.

Anyway, with this in mind I would love to hear anything that would constitute towards resolving this and I very much appreciate any and all help.

Thanks for at least reading and sorry for the very long post

Hello everyone. Was wondering what pencil should i use when first starting a drawing? I just bought a Derwent set, has anybody used these before?? They range from 9B to 9H and i thought i would use a harder lighter pencil to start with but finding the softer pencils(the ones i use for shading) dosnt cover the harder pencil marks. Anybody have any tips on what pencils to use on just a basic pencil drawing and what order? THanks alot.

I am a high school art teacher and just recently discovered this site. It's incredible! I would love for my advanced students to participate in the weekly drawing challenges and post their drawings for feedback. I will have to get the okay with the administration before I act on anything, but in the event that they aren't comfortable with letting students create individual accounts, I am wondering if it would be against the forum etiquette to create a "class" registration and have 6 or 7 students posting their drawings under one name?

Where can I learn to draw Dragons? I don't mean "childish"/cartoon Dragons either.

I'd like a step by step guide and no videos.

I've googled quite a few and none of them work for me as they seem messy.

Thanks.

Carrie Underwood Portrait

Hey everyone. It's been a busy week for me. I finished an oil painting and this drawing. It's rare that I finish two works in a week. Anyway, this is a pencil portrait I did of the lovely Carrie Underwood. I did this drawing just for fun...and practice. I've done a few of these drawings on tinted paper and I really enjoy doing them. I like the old style look to them. This work was done on Strathmore series 500 tinted paper using graphite and white colored pencil. I hope you like it

12"x18" Strathmore 500 series
2H, HB, B, 3B pencils and Prismacolor white colored pencil
No blending
20 hours
