Glossy shading

It seems like whenever I try to shade a really dark or black the shading turns glossy and I can't get it to go any darker. I use Staedtler Mars Lumograph pencils, is it possibly the paper? I have tried several papers from plain copy paper to 80lb drawing paper very fine txture. What can I be doing wrong?

Quick portraits

Since I have no budget and have to work on the cheap, I want to draw people's faces (portraits) in the time it takes for them to walk by me (while I stand or sit), which is between 10 and 15 s. I've noticed that after 10 s or so, my visual impression starts to fade, which gives me around 25 s at best to draw a portrait.

I'd love people to pose for me, but since I have no budget and I'm not yet skilled enough to have "sellable art", nor to convince my friends to sit for a few minutes and not be disappointed by the result, I guess I have to resort to drawing strangers. I don't feel confident enough to draw in places where people sit, since that suggests (to them) a certain quality level I don't yet have.

I've tried my local community college a few years ago, but they've increased their annual fees to a whopping 500 euros for 30 sessions of 2 hours each, which I can't justify, since I can't sell any of the resulting art, obviously, the model being there for study purposes only, even if my art were sellable.

I'm drawing from photos now, but it's not the same as drawing from life. The perspective is all wrong and it has no life to it.

That's a long winded way of asking how to make quick sketches of strangers as a means to improve your drawing skills. It has to be quick, precise and doable.

I see it not as a limitation, but rather as a challenge. Any tips or pointers are very welcome.

Hello, my art friends!

I would like to ask for your ideas in regards to inspiration for painting. A little background: this President's Day (2/20/12) will mark my 17 years as a childhood cancer Survivor. Each year in April we go to a big banquet to support research, survivors, etc. There is both silent and live auction, and I'm looking to create a painting for the silent auction. Not looking for actual painting ideas; any and all responses are appreciated. No wrong answers, just starting to brainstorm. Thanks in advance!

What image(s) come to mind when you hear the word, "hope" ?

Its why there are no real posts from me here or any other forum, It's my pet peeve. I know there are watercolorists on this forum, I want to use "water color pencils and ink tense pencils" I learn best from actually being there but in lieu of that, video. If you work with water soluble pencils and can suggest a place with tutorials/videos or products such as these that can be purchased.

Hello everyone. I'm kinda new around here and wanted to ask some questions. I saw there are courses on front page and i will start following them soon, but i'm working with The New Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain at the time.

I'm new to drawing but i followed lessons in that book (with more or less success) till profile drawing exercise. That first one with Sargent portrait. It should be easy but somehow i can't get how to draw all those curved lines. I can't get length and angles right just looking at it. I can draw short lines ok, but long are always wrong. Anyone have any tips? I just don't know if i have to repeat it 100 times or there is something i'm missing. I will add original drawing so you can see what i want to copy. Sorry if this is stupid question.

I am working my way through the free lessons and have been wondering several things:

Recognizing that everyone works and develops at their own pace, how long do you think it would take you to work through the free lessons here on drawspace?

What is your process while working through the lessons? I have generally been doing just what the lessons say and then moving on to the next. I've been toying with the idea of trying to do an extra project using the same techniques in the lessons with a real life object of my own but haven't yet done so

Are there any other beginner art resources you are working with while learning on Drawspace?

Who is working towards certification? What do you hope to use it for when you finish?

For myself I would love to become proficient enough to make a living doing art, but that is a long way off methinks.

One last for anyone who has put their art in a gallery, or show, or out there in the public. How did you get your first work out there? How did you decide it was time to put your work out there? How hard was it, personally, for you to put your work out for the critics and everyone to judge?

Calling All Artists - Beginners to Experienced.

Hello All,

I'm posting this, and I apologize if it's in the wrong place, because I know some of you can draw with wicked skills and I thought some of you might want to showcase your talents in a new zombie survival RPG book that is in the process of being finalized for print. This isn't the only place I'm posting this so there will most likely be more than one artist. What I'm looking for is realistic looking, dark zombie scenes. They don't have to be extremely complex but the more realistic and less "cartoony" the better.

More details will be provided to those that are interested. Please PM me if you are.

NOTE: This is not a commercial venture but a private project for those that love to draw and would love to have their work published. However, I want to make it clear that you will retain full rights to your artwork and the credits will reflect this. There are three available programs for compensation, however, these will only be discussed privately to those that express interest.

Thanks to all who read this.
