We have a new member named bobbykro and in his incredible gallery he has posted some pen and ink drawings done in pointillism. I forgot to get the link but you can find him somewhere. He is in the Welcome Forum also.. You gotta check out his gallery and go to his tinyurl website and look at his stuff. All I had time to check were his big cats. Very impressive..

Anyway, back to the question at hand. What is pointillism?

Pointillism is drawing or painting with dots. Lots and lots of dots.

Cyn - pointilism is when you place little dots usually with a pen. The closer the dots, the darker it becomes. So you get your shading by how close your dots are. It is very tedious. Worse than circulism. I'm not sure if I explained this very well, maybe someone else could.

Thanks girls that helps a lot. I really appreciate the response.. Holy cow, that is a tedious way to draw although it's beautiful and fascinating. But it's not for me to try yet. Patience may be a virtue, but no one said I was virtuous. laugh.gif I am having trouble being patient enough for circulism. I tried it on the face of the last American Indian I posted this morning. What a fiasco.. I'll just have to keep trying..
It's funny that all your life people say hurry, hurry, hurry and then when you deside to draw people say slow down, slow down, slow down.. laugh.gif

With me, I want to finish a piece before I even start it. I don't think I have the patience to try pointillism. unsure.gif

I saw his work. I think I might give it a try.

You do gooood stuff rsine, and it makes me feel better to know you want to hurry too, even if you don't.
I tried pointillism for about 2 minutes. I think I may have carpel tunnel in my wrist now and I know my eyes are gone and I am a nervous wreck..and it doesn't look like I did anything.. laugh.gif

smile.gif Very interesting technique, although I don't know if I'd have the patience to actually do it! smile.gif Sylvia

Would this be the same as stippling (sp?)?
painter48
Juniperdime - yes, its exactly like stippling. The problem is that you do the entire picture that way not just a part of it. In painting it is just dabbing paint in little dots in different colors to make the eye see the color you want.

Cyn - Now you have an idea why when I tried it I gave up after 2 pictures. I decided that it definitely wasn't for me!

That painting Tismyself posted is amazing. I have seen it a dozen of times at the art industry in Chicago.

I have tried pointillism many times. Once my wrist starts to hurt I just want to connect the dots to turn it into poor shading but if you are drawing with pen or permanent marker, pointillism is your best choice to simulate value.
