Farfallina
Hi to everyone.

My name is Rose and I’m your host for this week’s Drawing Challenge. Below are the six pictures I have selected for you hoping you will at least find one or two to your liking. I’ve tried to tackle various themes and techniques as well as different levels of difficulty.

I took all but one of the pictures myself so they are copyright free and you may do whatever you like with them. The picture of the cat, teddy bear and flowers was sent to me by my dearest friend Deborah, also a member of Drawspace (SweetSilverBird) who introduced me to this site and twisted my arm to start drawing (Ok, I know, very inappropriate metaphor there! biggrin.gif )

Draw one or draw them all but please stick to drawing be it graphite or colour. If you use water soluble pencils show us the drawing first… you may proceed to add water later.

I hope you do find something here that captures your fancy at whatever level of expertise you consider yourself to be.

So - ready, steady, go!!... and have fun everyone!

Here's some background information about the pictures and the reason why I chose them.

Pic.1 features my grandchildren Maya and Ivan. It was taken almost 3 years ago now when they were on holiday with their parents and uncles in Tunisia. Cute subjects for a portrait I thought. You may choose to draw only one of them if you wish.

Pic.2 is a tiny street in the old medieval capital of Gozo, Malta's sister island. This is good exercise for perspective.

Pic. 3 is a very lovely and sweet Himalayan cat named Kita who was very curious about the teddy bear and the flowers when they arrived for my friend's birthday. Here's a challenge with depicting two different kinds of fur.

Pic 4. should be pretty simple - though I can't draw foliage to save my life! The added challenge is to make the shadow of the branch on the wall look different from the actual thing.

Pic. 5 is a moth that seemed to enjoy being photographed as it stuck to the window in my washroom. How good are you at symmetry?! smile.gif

Pic 6. is a little statuette of Gollum - I just love his expression. Here's a posterized pic of him to help you with the shading: [attachmentid=2465]

Great Pictures, Rose. Already downloaded a couple and will probably do one of them tomorrow. (I've got to get away from this portrait woman......she's really getting on my nerves) hahahaha

Gollum is my FAVORITE character from LOTR

Tehobu
WOW!! That were fun! But not fair.I don't remember giving you permission to use a picture of me here. biggrin.gif NOW EVERYONE WILL KNOW WHAT I LOOK LIKE!!

Hi Rose, I love these pictures, Gollum is my favourite too, so guess what I'll be drawing? I have downloaded a couple of others as well though! Looking forward to this! Sylvia

rose i love these pictures you put up this week. especially the creature thing. i forget his name. i am going to try the kids and him. thanks
Lori
Cyn
Wow Rose.. Great pictures. You sure picked a winner with Golum. He's my favorite too, my precious... laugh.gif

I can hardly wait to get home this evening to start drawing..
Farfallina
Hi guys! Sorry I have not been in here before this but we have company today so I've been busy with the cooking and with the eating of it! biggrin.gif

I'm glad you liked the pictures. I must confess Gollum was an afterthought since I had something else in mind which I then thought might be a little too difficult to attempt - it was a si;ver horse so all the reflections were pretty crazy/

I can see why he's going to be a favourite though - his expressions is captivating.

Hope to see some other pictures attempted too though,

Ted: You set us going in just the right tone - thank you.... and no way you look like Gollum! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

OK - so i wrote this without my glasses and with a few glasses of wine in my head... hope you can read it! laugh.gif laugh.gif

Hi all,

Great pictures Rose...I hope to try one.

Nice sketch Ted...but I don't know .....I think I kind of look this way when I wake up in the morning......only he has more hair.laugh.gif This is one of my first sketches so I hope to work on one from the reference photo....lol.
wintermind
In the spirit of asking before using, may I draw these in pen? I feel the need to ask since I won't be posting as part of the challenge (graphite or colour). Thanks either way, and great selection. smile.gif

By all means wintermind. I think everyone considers pen and ink as drawing.

Nice one Brian! biggrin.gif

smile.gif Thanks. This -

Muy bueno Adolfo!!! Excelente!

I'm so happy that you graced this challenge with your first post on this site. What a lovely compliment! smile.gif

I have been looking at your gallery lately and your work is really most exciting!!

Thank you.
ADOLFO
Lamentablemente el scanner no da un resultado optimo, resalta mucho los tenues toques en azul (blue very sharp)
Sorry my inglihs is pour

I assure you your English is much better than my Spanish... though I can just barely follow what you say. biggrin.gif

Yes, I know - scanners are bad with graphite and I'm finding they are even worse with colour!! sad.gif I've decided the best thing is to take a picture of my colour drawings with my digital camera. It seems to work better.
ADOLFO
Thanks for its words, I am been thankful and is very amiable, my life is the illustration, and work like professional in this area, greetings, his nick translated the Italian is equivalent to litle butterfly
Juniperdime
Wow Adolfo..that is absolutely beautiful. I am embarrassed to even try that one now.

Oh no Juniper, please don't say that. Don't compare yourself to anyone else. You are you and whatever you do is worthwhile if you give it your best shot and enjoy doing it. That's the whole point. This is not a competition though you could turn it into a competition with yourself. You can't imagine what an enormous amount of good taking part in these challenges has done me... it made me really go out of my comfort zone... well at the start everything I attempted was out of my comfort zone!! rolleyes.gif

So if you think that drawing Gollum will be fun for you - do it! Do it your own way. There are as many interpretations of any subject as there are artists.
ADOLFO
Hoo no, you do not have to desconctar by that reason, you drink motivarte and mainly much practice, I am always training, the hand becomes hardened if she does not practice or she trains, I want transmitirte support and animarte
tismyself
So many good choices. I'd like to try the cat and bear. There's some similiar coloring and values and it'll be a challenge to make them different. Both my kids have the flu sad_an.gif , so if I don't get done it's not by choice.
I may just end up admiring everyone's drawings this time around since this will be one time my kids 'share'.
Only a matter of time. Ugh. sad.gif
ADOLFO

Better?
ADOLFO
I am proving and experimenting, and I have been able to verify qur scanner has problems with the blue color mainly is when one is crayon

Oh I hope not Amy - it would be a great pity. sad.gif Take loads of Vit.C sweetie. I escaped unscathed through a very severe bout of flu which hit my husband and one of my sons. I thank mostly the Vit. C for that.

Adolfo - that's fine. Really beautiful drawing.

That sounds great Paul - good luck with it - it should prove interesting.

It's even an hour later than the UK here so I'll should be hitting the hay myself soon too.

Goodnight to you.

Excellent entries fro tohobu and Brian, I'm sure neither of you look like that. Adolfo, as usual your work takes my breath away! Fabulous! Sylvia

Lori
kim1963
ADOLFO very nice work .. love the different colors in the skin .
Mecharver
ADOLFO super drawing. I love it.

Here is my drawing for tonight.
I hope you like it. smile.gif

I was thinking about drawing a butterfly for some time, but this moth was close.
It's a good practice for when I find a good butterfly to draw.

Till next time.
kim1963
Now that took gut Mecharver ... good job
painter48
Done with Prisma Markers on Marking Pen Paper.

Great drawing there P-48.Looking at yours , Adolfo's and Mecharver's drawing here made me decide something;I want to be an artist when I grow up. sad.gif dry.gif biggrin.gif
williac
Here is my attempt, using a 2h and a 2b. I need to adjust my scanner settings in the future. My shading looks a little different on the paper.

IPB Image

On an unrelated note, I just found my wifes old kneaded eraser. It ROCKS!!!!!!
painter48
Hey Ted - I didn't have ANY problems drawing Golum's eyes! LOL tongue.gif tongue.gif

Williac - Great job on the drawing! Glad to see you jumped right in to the challenge! No wonder your co-workers save those pieces of drywall with your drawings! laugh.gif

Here's another challenge picture....albeit not a very good one. It didn't exactly come out the way I had planned it to. hahahaha Such is life.......................

[attachmentid=2503][attachmentid=2504]

Pen and Ink and then watercolor pencils to finish.
kim1963
Painter ....awsome pen and ink of the walk way ... I love it ...your little guy is good as well .smile.gif

Will nice sketch on the little guy .. I keep forgetting his name lol .
Farfallina
So I go away to get myself a little sleep and look what you all come up with!! This is just wonderful!

williac: I'm so glad you joined us - welcome! smile.gif very nice rendering of Gollum. Well done!

Mecharver: Ooooh - you tackled the moth! Now as Kim says that's a tricky one but you really made a fine job of it - great detail!

Joanie: Wow I say! Great treatment of the alleyway. I think the medium you chose is just perfect for it since the picture really has very few tonal variances. I so admire pen and ink - you must be very brave. Every stroke is so final and irrevocable isn't it! And the colouring of it worked pretty well too I thought. It may not be what you had in mind but since I can't say what was in your mind I can only comment on what I actually see - and what I see is very pleasing and delicate.

As for your Gollum - no need for any brown paper bags!! biggrin.gif - great stuff girlie! cool.gif

Here's my own rather sinister rendering of Gollum. I used HB, 2B and 4B pencils.

[attachmentid=2506]

wow rose awesome job.
mercharver--you did great with it. really great job
painter--wow i love both pictures--especially the use of markers, that looks great.
williac- that looks great too. fantastic

Lori
Venus
tongue.gif Kim I think in Lord of the Rings he was Speigal when he was good and Gollum when he turned evil. I loved his character though as well as the movie.

Painter and Williac...excellent jobs on your pictures!!! I drew him last night but the face doesn't look right so I am working on that today to get scanned and on here soon.
wintermind
All of the Gollum's look amazing. biggrin.gif

rolleyes.gif I did the same, Venus, only I penned mine. The outline looked closer to the pic (though I don't think by much) before I got to the fun part with the pen. smile.gif

[attachmentid=2509]
Farfallina
Hi Venus - I'm looking forward to your drawings. smile.gif

Wintermind - very nice on Gollum!

Since I personally know the cat - even if she is in Canada - I really wanted to draw her. Kita is a really beautiful cat though she has a reputation of being a brat! biggrin.gif I hope I did her justice and my friend won't kill me.

[attachmentid=2510]
racedolls
awesome rose you did her beautifully.
winterwind great job. i am to afraid to do pen. love to see the work though
Lori
Venus

Hi there Kim... I took several scans while I was working on Kita. I might write a little something about it if enough people are interested.
Brian David Dekter
