Hi to everyone.
My name is Rose and I’m your host for this week’s Drawing Challenge. Below are the six pictures I have selected for you hoping you will at least find one or two to your liking. I’ve tried to tackle various themes and techniques as well as different levels of difficulty.
I took all but one of the pictures myself so they are copyright free and you may do whatever you like with them. The picture of the cat, teddy bear and flowers was sent to me by my dearest friend Deborah, also a member of Drawspace (SweetSilverBird) who introduced me to this site and twisted my arm to start drawing (Ok, I know, very inappropriate metaphor there!

)
Draw one or draw them all but please stick to drawing be it graphite or colour. If you use water soluble pencils show us the drawing first… you may proceed to add water later.
I hope you do find something here that captures your fancy at whatever level of expertise you consider yourself to be.
So - ready, steady, go!!... and have fun everyone!

Here's some background information about the pictures and the reason why I chose them.
Pic.1 features my grandchildren Maya and Ivan. It was taken almost 3 years ago now when they were on holiday with their parents and uncles in Tunisia. Cute subjects for a portrait I thought. You may choose to draw only one of them if you wish.
Pic.2 is a tiny street in the old medieval capital of Gozo, Malta's sister island. This is good exercise for perspective.
Pic. 3 is a very lovely and sweet Himalayan cat named Kita who was very curious about the teddy bear and the flowers when they arrived for my friend's birthday. Here's a challenge with depicting two different kinds of fur.
Pic 4. should be pretty simple - though I can't draw foliage to save my life! The added challenge is to make the shadow of the branch on the wall look different from the actual thing.
Pic. 5 is a moth that seemed to enjoy being photographed as it stuck to the window in my washroom. How good are you at symmetry?!

Pic 6. is a little statuette of Gollum - I just love his expression. Here's a posterized pic of him to help you with the shading: [attachmentid=2465]

Gollum is my FAVORITE character from LOTR

Hi guys! Sorry I have not been in here before this but we have company today so I've been busy with the cooking and with the eating of it!

I'm glad you liked the pictures. I must confess Gollum was an afterthought since I had something else in mind which I then thought might be a little too difficult to attempt - it was a si;ver horse so all the reflections were pretty crazy/
I can see why he's going to be a favourite though - his expressions is captivating.
Hope to see some other pictures attempted too though,
Ted: You set us going in just the right tone - thank you.... and no way you look like Gollum!
OK - so i wrote this without my glasses and with a few glasses of wine in my head... hope you can read it!

Hi all,
Great pictures Rose...I hope to try one.

This is one of my first sketches so I hope to work on one from the reference photo....lol.

In the spirit of asking before using, may I draw these in pen? I feel the need to ask since I won't be posting as part of the challenge (graphite or colour). Thanks either way, and great selection.

By all means
wintermind. I think everyone considers pen and ink as drawing.
Nice one

I assure you your English is much better than my Spanish... though I can just barely follow what you say.
Yes, I know - scanners are bad with graphite and I'm finding they are even worse with colour!!

I've decided the best thing is to take a picture of my colour drawings with my digital camera. It seems to work better.

Oh no Juniper, please don't say that. Don't compare yourself to anyone else. You are you and whatever you do is worthwhile if you give it your best shot and enjoy doing it. That's the whole point. This is not a competition though you could turn it into a competition with yourself. You can't imagine what an enormous amount of good taking part in these challenges has done me... it made me really go out of my comfort zone... well at the start everything I attempted was out of my comfort zone!!
So if you think that drawing Gollum will be fun for you - do it! Do it your own way. There are as many interpretations of any subject as there are artists.

So many good choices. I'd like to try the cat and bear. There's some similiar coloring and values and it'll be a challenge to make them different. Both my kids have the flu

, so if I don't get done it's not by choice.
I may just end up admiring everyone's drawings this time around since this will be one time my kids 'share'.
Only a matter of time. Ugh.

Oh I hope not Amy - it would be a great pity.

Take loads of Vit.C sweetie. I escaped unscathed through a very severe bout of flu which hit my husband and one of my sons. I thank mostly the Vit. C for that.
Adolfo - that's fine. Really beautiful drawing.

ADOLFO super drawing. I love it.
Here is my drawing for tonight.

It's a good practice for when I find a good butterfly to draw.

On an unrelated note, I just found my wifes old kneaded eraser. It ROCKS!!!!!!

Hey Ted - I didn't have ANY problems drawing Golum's eyes! LOL

Williac - Great job on the drawing! Glad to see you jumped right in to the challenge! No wonder your co-workers save those pieces of drywall with your drawings!

Here's another challenge picture....albeit not a very good one. It didn't exactly come out the way I had planned it to. hahahaha Such is life.......................

So I go away to get myself a little sleep and look what you all come up with!! This is just wonderful!
williac: I'm so glad you joined us - welcome!

very nice rendering of Gollum. Well done!
Mecharver: Ooooh - you tackled the moth! Now as Kim says that's a tricky one but you really made a fine job of it - great detail!
Joanie: Wow I say! Great treatment of the alleyway. I think the medium you chose is just perfect for it since the picture really has very few tonal variances. I so admire pen and ink - you must be very brave. Every stroke is so final and irrevocable isn't it! And the colouring of it worked pretty well too I thought. It may not be what you had in mind but since I can't say what was in your mind I can only comment on what I actually see - and what I see is very pleasing and delicate.
As for your Gollum - no need for any brown paper bags!!

- great stuff girlie!
Here's my own rather sinister rendering of Gollum. I used HB, 2B and 4B pencils.

Kim I think in Lord of the Rings he was Speigal when he was good and Gollum when he turned evil. I loved his character though as well as the movie.
Painter and Williac...excellent jobs on your pictures!!! I drew him last night but the face doesn't look right so I am working on that today to get scanned and on here soon.

All of the Gollum's look amazing.

I did the same, Venus, only I penned mine. The outline looked closer to the pic (though I don't think by much) before I got to the fun part with the pen.

Hi Venus - I'm looking forward to your drawings.
Wintermind - very nice on Gollum!
Since I personally know the cat - even if she is in Canada - I really wanted to draw her. Kita is a really beautiful cat though she has a reputation of being a brat!

I hope I did her justice and my friend won't kill me.
