Full Version: O01 - Gentle Giant
Drawspace forums > Drawing lesson comments > Intermediate > O - Caricatures

Plan on having some productive fun giving Gentle an endearing facial expression. This caricature uses three different graduated shading techniques, squirkling, hatching, and crosshatching, to define the three- dimensional forms and the texture of a face, facial features, and short curly hair.

Is it just me or does our gentle giant look exactly like Rueben Studdard.

What about using solid shapes in the exercises and not just flat drawings? This should be a primary subject ever since the beginner stage and until this lesson I hav'nt seen it, very bad drawspace, very bad

I got this after downloading it to my computer: There was an error downloading this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired. I tried to download again, and got the same message. No tutorial showing.

Brenda,

Thank you for the Gentle Giant. I did work through it and have it very close. Made a slight change with the nose, shading in he oval edges that, to my eyes in your work, seemed a little clownish.

What a delight it is to open my mail and find the great work you do here.

Aloha from the middle of the Pacific Ocean...

In terms of realistic / photographic portrait drawing:
Contour drawing is the foundation of many successful portrait (even still life) drawing. When you miss the correct proportion as early as the 'guide' lines, you may not love a client's reaction to your finished work.
I am fascinated with a sketch that resembles the subject --i would frame it all the way, forgetting the realistic aspect, as it is already a powerful artwork itself. But not all sketches come like that. Hence, I would push more practice time on sketching / contour drawing skill --color, texture, and value rendering come next.

The Gentle Giant exercise offers ample opportunities to improve one's skills in line drawing. I like it. wink.gif

Nice lesson!

Posting my attempt before I get cold feet... will look at it again tomorrow and be better able to analyze what worked and what didn't.

OK, I took about 3 weeks to complete this. Every time I did some, I would look at what I had left and go "All ah dat???!!" Then I would go and watch TV or something. But unfortunately this is my last week of vacation sad.gif so I HAD to finish this week!

I think this is my best drawing yet, even though at some parts I was thinking I'm going to rip it up because of problems with crosshatching. I'm looking forward to doing more realistic forms of shading. Thanks for the lesson, Brenda!

ArtrA,
Your crosshatching looks incredible! Even after all the tutorials done involving crosshatching, I find I have no patience/skill with it. All I really feel comfortable with is the realistic blended look (without actually blending). Keep drawing whenever you find time, you're doing great! -Mindy

Thanks Mindy, I always admire your work in posts and I think you are a wonderful artist! By the way, my sister (who is not on drawspace, neither does art) just came and asked if you are the Mindy that draws really good (I had showed her some of your work previously). So you see, you certainly have SKILLS! Keep it up!

He does look like Reuben Stoddard, but I think this is Rosie Grier, a retired football player.
