Thanks, Audrius.
Gracias Turrialba, tu retrato de la chica es maravilloso de verdad.

It's been a while since I've entered a weekly challenge. Here is my latte cup full of grapefruit: cp on Stonehenge, 5x6", at least 4 hours. I feel like I'm starting to "get it" with colored pencil, although I still haven't worked out how to photograph them well.

I have a cup just like this -- same size, same color -- that I drink my coffee from each morning. Wonderful photos, Siks!

Splendid work Ernest. can you tell us how many layers of color did you put in the cup and grapefruit?

Xioa Jun, what size is your charcoal work?I like the way you work in charcoal.Maybe you can post a larger file for better appreciation.

Short answer: a lot smile.gif I have got religion as far as layering colors goes; the more you use, the better. The only thing in this whole painting that is one color is the grapefruit pith, and even that has some colored shadows on it in parts.

The cup actually doesn't have many. There is an underpainting in black grape, then indigo blue in the dark parts and true blue in the lighter parts, with a little mineral orange and magenta here and there.

The grapefruit peel has a magenta underpainting, then mineral orange, yellow ochre, and lemon yellow, in varying amounts for the different peels. The flesh starts with tuscan red around the edges, then a layer of pink in some areas and spanish orange in others, some mineral orange, and a surprising amount of poppy red, as well as some impressing to get those white spots. The pith is cream, with clay rose and tuscan red in the "crack".

The wall is magenta, then mineral orange, then spanish orange. The table is dark green, then tuscan red, then black, then indigo blue.

I see. Thanks for the details, Ernest. There's a whole alchemy behind this cup laugh.gif that took you 4 full hours ohmy.gif

smile.gif nTried this again using watercolour and a water brush! I purchased this on Kays recomendation, and found it to be extremely useful! I may have to invest in a few more. Thanks Kay!

oliverandjazz
That is great steve, like i said the more quality ones can be found at dick blick and they are useful for things such as this but i find background washes it is better to use a reg brush and water..I am glad you like them, I know i love mine and use them ALL the time, it is awesome to not have to continually dump containers and refill. and the ease of travel with them is wonderful too wink.gif

oops never mind i see that you did purchase the quality ones.. good for you happy.gif
Ernest Friedman-Hill
That is really nice, Steve!

Excellent! Do you rough out with pencil first? or is it straight in with the pen?
siksnosparnyte
Garyfallia, great sketch! The Cathedral sure is a challenge for perspective skills. smile.gif I wouldn't be brave enough even to try it...

I firstly printed the photo in A4 paper so that I have a guide , then I mesured the distances and made a simple outline sketch and finally I draw it with the ink !!

Thanks for the comments ... it was really a challenge since nobody sketched it before !!
Sveta17
Beauitiful photos and nice contributions here!

Here's my sketch directly with a pen of the coffee drinking ritual. I am afraid I didn't finish it - maybe tomorrow.
Songsparrow
Wow! Sveta, that is fantastic! smile.gif
Sveta17
Thank you, Songsparrow,

Here's another sketch of the cathedral. Not as upright as it should be.
Songsparrow
Another fantastic effort! What kind of pens do you use? I have just started on an ink drawing myself, I wasn't too sure how to go about it, but your pictures and Garyfallias have inspired me to carry on! I may post up some wip pics.

Great job on this one!
Sveta17
Thanks, Steve,

My pens are very small nibs made od steel and I use them with a pen holder. I have long wanted to buy something new, as my penholder has become loose and sometimes the nib falls on the drawing...leaving ink drops on it.
but I have a hundreds of these small quills in a box and here I am, still using them.

Wonderful sketches, Sveta!

I had never tried chalk pastels on the Canson colored paper but there is not nearly enough tooth to hold it.
Oh well - you learn! smile.gif
I'll have to stick to the oil pastels with that paper.

This is excellent! You have so much depth to your image! Brilliant! smile.gif

Thank you siksnosparnyte and Steve. I appreciate your comments. smile.gif

I'm still not happy with the way the pastels worked with this paper. It lost some of it's pure saturation so it isn't as bright as the original. I'll invest in some paper made for soft pastels the next time I get over to Hobby Lobby - or maybe I'll just order some from Dick Blick. I do actually have some but they are soft pastel colors and I wanted the bright orange. I could use construction paper but it still doesn't do justice to the medium.

Shhh.... unsure.gif You should have said that it HAD to be so. Maybe it's your artistic creativity and without changing the tilt of that grapefruit the whole composition would be a complete failure laugh.gif

Really, I like your drawing. And I pretty like how the grapefruit is tilted there smile.gif
