Splendid work Ernest. can you tell us how many layers of color did you put in the cup and grapefruit?
Short answer: a lot

I have got religion as far as layering colors goes; the more you use, the better. The only thing in this whole painting that is one color is the grapefruit pith, and even that has some colored shadows on it in parts.
The cup actually doesn't have many. There is an underpainting in black grape, then indigo blue in the dark parts and true blue in the lighter parts, with a little mineral orange and magenta here and there.
The grapefruit peel has a magenta underpainting, then mineral orange, yellow ochre, and lemon yellow, in varying amounts for the different peels. The flesh starts with tuscan red around the edges, then a layer of pink in some areas and spanish orange in others, some mineral orange, and a surprising amount of poppy red, as well as some impressing to get those white spots. The pith is cream, with clay rose and tuscan red in the "crack".
The wall is magenta, then mineral orange, then spanish orange. The table is dark green, then tuscan red, then black, then indigo blue.
