Jazzmanian - You have done a great job on the gnome - By the way what are graphic markers? Are they like Prisma Markers?
They are Staedtler Mars graphic 300 duo markers. One end has a fine tip (not used on this drawing), and the other a flexible brush type tip.

Thanks
Jazz - I have a small set of Staedtler Mars Brush Markers. Your graphic markers are like my Prisma's only a different brand is all. For a moment there I thought I was going to have to check into another medium. LOL. I like the way you used them - nice painterly effect.
Paulette - good job on the glass fish. I'm not sure if I'm going to try to tackle that one. It looks very difficult, especially with the iridescence. I think we got a gnome thing going on this week.
Writers Widower - You are the first to draw that silly catsup bottle LOL You really did a good job on it though. The odd angle looking up at it makes it more difficult than just drawing a catsup bottle. Bravo! By the way, I grew up using Brooks catsup and I prefer it over all other brands. My husband says it tastes too much like BBQ sauce. hahahahaha
How wonderful to see all these new artists here.

Nellie - very pretty drawing of the fish - I like it. So glad you're back, we didn't know what happened to you. LOL
Spazz - Wonderful job on the mice - glad to see you joining in. If you like cartooning, why not try the gnome in a cartoon style? challenge yourself ! Can't wait to see more.
Vijay - Great to see you doing another picture - and you really did very well on it too.
Connie - excellent squirkling!

I love the fish -
Rafael, Nellie ... two different treatments, both extremely effective.
Spazz - nice Mickey and
Vijay - great gnome. It's lovely to see you so active!
I know this breaks the rules but hey! this is my third entry on this challenge so I thought I was entitled to a little cheat. These are my watercolour pencils - watered!

It really is not quite possible (for me at least) to finish the whole drawing in the colours and then water it later since the work must be done in sections and allowed to dry for further layering and/or working on the next bit.
Here's my Valentine Mickey and Mini .... I promised this one to my granddaughter... I'll frame it and give it to her.

Rose how so did you break the rules
Because if you use watercolour pencils you are supposed to present the unwatered drawing for the Challenge... but really from my experience in a complicated drawing such as this with so many black arms and legs all over to place - to say nothing of fliying hearts

- that is quite impossible.
Thanik you for your comment about my drawing ... and thank you Brian for your wishes... and the same to you from me - I did get three red roses today.

Feb 14 2007, 08:07 PM
Rose - Awwwwww that is so cute, you even did the background in color. Maya will love it. Yep, you broke the rules.

Okay go stand in the corner for a while and you'll be forgiven.
I understand what you mean by not being able to use watercolor pencils without wetting them. But Venus did that glass fish and didn't wet hers.???? I don't know how she makes them look that good without wetting them. They seem to be very coarse when they are being used. Not smooth like prisma's. What's your trick Venus?

Who made up that rule anyway?
Happy Valentines Day Everyone! Oh, you too Snoopy!
Farfallina
Feb 14 2007, 08:28 PM
Miss Joanie, Miss please... before I go to the corner may I please explain something. I didn't mean that you can't use the water soluble pencils without wetting them. They can look quite good left alone. I used them to paint my first butterfly and did not water them.

However this being a cartoon needing very vibrant colours and since I already had in mind to give it to Maya I knew I wanted to water it... and that's what is impossible to do - watering when the whole drawing is all down... you can never get the detail that way, the colours would just bleed into each other.
Now.. I'm off to the corner!

Feb 14 2007, 08:46 PM
Rose - ROFLMBO - Leave it to you to find a picture of someone in the corner! Okay, I'll forgive you. Maybe we can get the rules changed? hahahahahaha that was great!
Okay, Moderators out there - what's your opinion on that call?
Venus
Feb 14 2007, 08:56 PM

Joanie, If I told you my secret then I'd have to hun you down and kill you...
LOL no serious I just go really dark with my colors and go over them with a light gray or white, or atleast thats what I did with the Fishie paper weight. And I still haven't wet it to see what it will look like with the watercolor effect. I am afraid that being as how I went to dark with the pencils and used so much of the lead it won't look right.
As far as watercolor pencils go, being as how they are allowed to be used I don't see why if someone wants to spend more time on the challenge and paint or add water is a problem....but I am not the boss....

Who is the boss? Brenda? Who started the idea of Drawing challenges on here? I know on Wet Canvas they use any medium on their drawing challenges.
Venus
Feb 14 2007, 09:13 PM

Actually, Brenda is the boss, but I think Jeanette is the one who came up with the idea and the challenge. So you have to wait until after the 19th when she comes back from vacation and ask her if you can change the rules.

Feb 14 2007, 09:15 PM
Phew! Now that I am forgiven I can speak again.
I have no idea who made the rules of the challenges since I haven't been here all that long but I think the emphasis on drawing is in the character of the site. This is Drawspace... so I suppose people are meant to learn and exhibit drawings. Again I don't really know, but I assume the thrust on drawing was meant to differentiate the site from all the others... sort of make it more of a niche.
I must say I really love that it does place so much emphasis on drawing... since that's were all forms of art spring from... even the most magnificent painting... even the imposing sculpture starts with a sketch.

Great work everyone. Sorry I don't have time to post actually flattery for each work; they all deserve it - but I am way over my head in overdue paperwork. Anyone know a way to make stacks of paper solid and smooth enough to work as a drawing table... or maybe I should just use the edges to make a mural

Anyways, I'm hoping that I can free some more time to join the conversations going on around here and not just post my art and have my ego stroked (thanks for that too everyone

)

rose i love mickey mouse-- i am going to try to tackle that next, and your butterfly is beautiful.
nellie your fish is awesome. i want to learn pastels so bad. you do beautiful work with them. i was thinking of getting some pastel pencils.
welcome to all the newcomers--you all do beautiful work. sorry i dont know all your names yet. but love the picture of the building, that is just georgous. i wish i could do work like that. i just dont think i can do water. great job everyone.
here is my portrait-- i tried in color pencil and it just didnt look right. i dont know if its me or the paper. i might give it another try with color. this i did in about an hour- maybe a little more. i had been using a grid for perportions but now i am trying to use measurements to practice some without grids. i think i got pretty close-- i see the nose needed some work and probably lowered the eyes some because she looks older then the reference. comments and critiques always welcomed
