*****Happy Valentines Week*****
Hello everyone and welcome to the Weekly Drawing Challenge. My name is Joanie (painter48) and I will be the host for this Valentine's Week. (Don't forget your special Valentine on Wednesday!)
I hope you enjoy the pictures I have chosen for you to challenge yourself. Draw one or draw them all. Your choice. Just draw something! As before, no painting. Use graphite, charcoal, pastels, color pencils, pen and ink or watercolor pencils (but no water) You just post your picture before you add the water.
Hi Brian!Photo#1-This is Sierra, my little granddaughter - 5 years old and beautiful blue eyes.
[attachmentid=2622] [attachmentid=2623]
Photo#2-Bollinger Mill. This is a very old grist mill near Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Home of Rush Limbaugh(hahaha) and the "Trail of Tears" where the indians were forced south away from their lands and onto reservations.Many died along the way which is why it was called the Trail of Tears. We got to go inside the mill and see the huge stones that were used to grind with and the tools that were used in the old days. That is a covered bridge in the background. I believe it was built in the 1800's.
[attachmentid=2624] [attachmentid=2625]
Photo#3-This is a glass sculpture of a fish - you can see through it and it has a faint blue cast to the glass. However I noticed while I was taking a picture of it that the iridescence of it kept changing depending on what light I put it in. So I'm posting one in a dark atmosphere and one in a light atmosphere. This will probably be a tough one!
[attachmentid=2626] [attachmentid=2627] [attachmentid=2628] [attachmentid=2629]
Photo#4-This is a picture of Angel - she belongs to my husband's daughter and family. She is part Bison Frise and part Poodle and part stupid and a very big part obnoxious. Can you tell I don't care for her very much? LOL If you draw her, her eyes are black. The camera flash made her have demonic eyes. How appropriate.
[attachmentid=2630] [attachmentid=2631]
Photo#5-Okay, so I don't have any Lord of the Rings or Gollums for you to draw.....Sorry. I do, however, have this gnome. He's kinda cute if you ask me.
[attachmentid=2632] [attachmentid=2633]
Photo#6-Another just plain silly picture but interesting perspective. This is the world's largest catsup bottle. It is located in Collinsville, Illinois (that's where I grew up) it is in the Guiness Book of World's records. It is a water tower that stands 170 feet tall and was built in 1949 for the G.S.Suppiger Co. who were the bottlers of Brooks Catsup. It was saved from demolition in 1995. It is recognized as an excellent example of mid 20th century roadside Americana and was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. You can read more at www.catsupbottle.com
[attachmentid=2634] [attachmentid=2635]
Here's a little
BONUS that I've added to the list................It may be a little blurry but you get the idea.
[attachmentid=2636] [attachmentid=2637]
So that is my challenges for the week. I hope you all enjoy them and that I have given you a good selection to chose from. I tried to pick some easy ones and some hard ones. I also hope to see some new faces joining in on the challenges. The more the merrier! Quit lurking and join us all you newbies out there.
****Happy Valentines Day to All****

Very interesting pictures Joanie!

I think most of them ask me to step out of my comfort zone and that's a very good thing. I'll start working on something as soon as I finish the portrait I'm currently working on.

Ooops .... It looks like hard work

. Hope I can manage that. The gnome is my favorite, though very difficult with all his hair and folds.
What a nice girl is your granddaughter! I`m sure she will be portraited lots of times.
Well, I`ll start ...

Ted - great job on Sierra - its so hard to do teeth and that sure was fast! It really looks like her. She has a habit of putting her face on "automatic smile" whenever there is a camera around. LOL
Christie - I did that picture of the gnome a few days ago (I cheated) before I posted the challenges. Also, working with markers is not very time consuming.
Lori - I use Prisma Markers. They have a fine point on one end and a broad point on the other. Sometimes I use Marvy brand markers which are "brush" type markers. They really are a fun medium to play with but I'll warn you, they can be very expensive.
Brian - I just couldn't resist putting in that Snoopy when I found it. I know you like your cartoons so I included the Micky Mouse as a bonus. Turns out that you're not the only one who likes them!
Brian David Dekter
Feb 11 2007, 05:35 PM

Thanks Painter, that was very sweet of you I really appreciate that.....yes they sure are popular.
I spent a good part of the morning on it.... it was not an easy one for me to sketch. I used ink and water color pencil....
Great portrait TED....and that is a quick one....I think she is adorable ...you sure have a talent.

Brian - Fantastic job on the Mickey Mouse. Ink and watercolor, huh? How did you get those vibrant colors from watercolors? You did that one fast! I'll have to try it out in markers....hahahaha

You know BrianDavid, thats not a bad idea for a Cartoon and Caricature challenge. I was even contimplating an Animal Challenge as well. I will bring it up to Brenda as soon as she cleans her PM box out..LOL. I have been trying to send her a message ALL day.

Brian - Snoopy is something else! hahahahaha Thanks - Snoopy 101 ......too funny. When my kids were little I used to draw Snoopy on everything. They thought it was funny. Also, my best friend's nickname is Snoopy. So it was even funnier for them.
After seeing how good your Mickey and Minnie Mouse turned out, I sat down and gave it a try myself. Only I did it with Prisma Markers............as usual and much easier than pen and watercolor. hahahaha

Ok Kim I replied to you on the Forensic Thread...should we do it there like you suggest or do you think it should be a new thread all together? Just let me know.
Ok here is my drawing for the draw challenge this week. I did the fishie paper weight. It was alot of fun. I used canson watercolor paper and used Derwent WC pencils. (Didn't wet it down though..

Hi, I've been watching the forum regularly and doing some of the drawing, one or two of which my husband (Jazzmanian) posted with his. This time I decided I would like to really participate. I enjoyed art in High School, but never really did any again, in spite of my art teacher. I always liked scenery/realism best, and cartoon style scares me to death, so this was right up my alley. This particular graphite on paper picture is my first ever attempt at "squirkling".

Just jokin', I do not compare with other participants but, for sure, I'll have in mind your drawing while attempting mine.

Hi all,
Painter your Mickey and Minnie is beautiful, I love it! It was not as easy as I thought it would be.

I see you are really great at cartoons . I have to get some Prisma markers yet...lol
Thanks Kim and Venus, I think it is a great idea and also love the idea about an animal thread, stay tuned for Snoopy 101.....lol.
Venus I admire your talents on the fish paper weight, also really love your site, your digital work is beautiful, you are so talented.
Ladylee what a great sketch, I also enjoy sketching scenery, I hope to see more of your work...and Jazzmanian another great one.
Have a great day everyone, I am at work so I better go before my boss walks in...lol..

Hi all!
This is the very very first time that I participate in a challenge. I painted the gnome with colored pencils ("Rembrandt Polycolor", "Verithins" and Prismas"). And it is the first time too that I painted such an object. The hair of the beard was very hard to draw, I never did hair before this way.
And I am SO proud that I accomplished it!
Many greets, Martina.

Hi there - looks like everyone is doing really awesome. I love the cartoons - very well done and Ladylee, welcome - great job on that landscape.. I really should get out of my rut and try something like that sometime.
Venus - I love your fish - great stuff!
These challenges are proving great for drawing out all the lurkers and producing some work of really high standard. Well done Joanie for your selection and well done everyone for all the entries presented so far.
Meantime - here's my gnome done in Prismacolors.

Oh my goodness! Where do I start?
First of all, Welcome to Drawspace to Fullmetal Cracker and Lady Lee - I'm so glad to have you join us. It's nice to see some new faces joining in and not just lurking in the background.
Rose - I think you're getting a handle on those Prisma's.......I love the way you have made the gnome shiney in different spots. It is truly the way he looks in real life. He has some type of shiney varnish on him and you have made him look like a real statue...great job.
Fullmetal Cracker - Very nice quick sketch of the mice........5 minutes must be the worlds record for fast sketching...LOL..................hope you'll have more time on the next one. Can't wait to see more of your drawings.
Ladylee - I'm in awe - what a fantastic drawing. You have rendered it so well. I'm working on that picture myself and know how hard it is. Your squirkling is outstanding. I hope to see more of your drawings.
Jazzmanian - You have done a great job on the gnome - By the way what are graphic markers? Are they like Prisma Markers?
Traumsonne - Very nice drawing of the gnome. Glad to see you joining in. Hope to see more of your drawings.

Seems like we all like Golum and the Gnome. Must be the love of fantasy in all of us.

Brian - Super Duper! Don't you love those markers? If you are doing a lot of cartooning, I think markers are a must. Color pencils just don't make the grade for cartooning. I also have a book on illustration in advertising. Markers are used for that too. I love the rich vibrant color that you get with them. I also use some Crayola Markers on some of my stuff, they're cheap and I do like how they brush on. I used them mostly in combination as I don't have a large set of Prisma Markers. I do use the grey markers a lot though. They are great for shading etc. The Prisma Markers have a pointy end and a broad end.
Yes, I prefer not to do cartoons, but I will admit that every once in a while I get an urge to use them and do some cartoon characters. But mostly I just like to paint and draw. I usually draw cartoons for my grandchildren or when I send them cards in the mail, I'll draw cartoon characters on the envelopes. They seem to like that alot.

I too would like to welcome Lady Lee and Fullmeatal Cracker to Drawspace!! Wonderful jobs on your first try at the challenges and glad to see you participating.
I thought about doing the knome but he just looked to easy for me to do and I wanted a challenge so I did the fishie, plus I like to be different and KNEW that Minnie & Mickey and the Knome would be #1 picks for most of the participants so I decided to be different. Thats just me.

Thanks everyone for the compliments it really brightened my day after hearing hubby tell me last night that its nice that I do art as a "hobby" but he doesn't think I will go anywhere with it. Kinda brought me down really low.
Anyways on a brighter note, I think everyone is doing a fantastic job and keep the great work coming!!!

Not to worry Venus. What others say has little bearing... as long as you believe in yourself you will go far.
Very nice portraits Wintermind and Kim.
I too spent the evening playing with Sierra. I altered the angle a little and shifted the light source to the viewer's right... I really don't like it when the highlight is right in the center of the eye... and shifting the light source also allowed me a little more shading. That said, children are so very difficult to do!

Thanks Painter..... yes the markers were fun and much faster to color....lol...What I would really like to do is get my computer an upgrade so I can install Photo- shop and start to color with my computer. I still prefer to sketch the original on paper and do not think I would like a tablet. You really are great at cartoons I hope to see more....
Venus.... you are a star to me

don't listen to him...follow your dreams and your heart.
Painter I thought I would pick up my pencils again and tried the landscape....I think I rushed it a bit....if I only had more time...it sure was fun.
I really admire everyone's talents. Night , Brian.

Kim and Rose - what can I say, you both did fabulous with Sierra. Especially with all those teeth showing! I wouldn't even attempt it. We just can't seem to get a picture of her without her grinning like that! LOL
