In this lesson you draw a profile portrait of a young woman, by using a simple grid to help you set up accurate facial proportions. Shading of the facial features, hair, background, and facial forms is rendered with hatching graduations.

This tutorial was GREAT!!! The outcome was so good, with easy directions! The rest of the tutorials on the site are great too (except I discovered that I can't draw fur at all >_<)
Eric
From what I've been told, you don't draw fur, you draw the shadows between each hair. Hope that helps you. I still have to try it out myself.

? ^^ well you know what i meant.
I still don't like drawing fur >_> and i will have to see what techniques, if we cover fur, my art teacher employs.

This is really neat! I actually own "Drawing For Dummies". The stuff about drawing textures in that book is really good. It's nice to get more of Brenda's instruction for free!

So here's a general comment: I've been looking at a lot of photorealistic drawing on the web lately, and it seem like blending has a lot to do with making the drawing look like a photograph. Does anybody make their own tortillons (or blending stumps) out there?

Kitty Warden - I don't personally make my own tortillions. But there is a thread in the Suggestions Forum that you can find out how to make your own from scratch. Good Luck.

Thanks, painter48. The tortillion website was interesting. I've tried using a chamois for blending, too, but I thought that it took too much graphite/charcoal off.

This was such an awesome lesson and it helped me to create one my best drawings so far (I am pretty much still in the "beginner" stage right now though I have had a little bit of training). This site, in general, has been an enormous help to me since I am teaching myself. Draw Space has become my teacher and is just as good as any book that you could buy. I went to the art store today to buy a text and couldn't find anything that had stuff that wasn't on this site. I love Draw Space!

Hehe, nice signature, I was taking art history II this spring semester and one of the images on our final to study was from John Singer Sargent wink.gif

Thanks for this! My outcome was similar biggrin.gif And I learnt how to draw hair a bit better

My hatching needs work on this one. But the features and hair are nice. mellow.gif

There is a problem with the cornea and iris in your drawing. The anterior chamber of the eye is actually a clear space, the cornea is similarly clear, thus the iris and pupil are actually set a little bit further back. Just a technicality.

It was amazing
keep going your great

This was a really great lesson for me. I tend to really struggle with hair and this lesson helped me "get it" I was amazed at the results I got! Will approach all future portraits in the same manor. THanks Brenda!!!!

Thanks for the lesson! I feel much more comfortable with the hair now, more so all the time. happy.gif
