Venus
wave.gif Hello and Welcome to Imaginations Equal Cartoon Creations!! There will be two Host for this challenge, Myself (Venus) and Brian David, our wonderful Drawspace cartoonist!! This challenge is intended for us drawers to use our unique and exspressive artistic imaginations!!

smile.gif To start off, Brian asks us all; "What is a Cartoon?"
: Is it a social comedy, a political comedy, a editorial opinion, a design, or a drawing or painting intended for satire and humor? Or is it a ludicrously unrealistic one dimentional portrayal of something that can be entertaining and fun?:
( I would like us all to ask ourselves these questions when we start our cartoons)

tongue.gif Ok now, I am open for suggestions, but decided to start the challenge for now using reference photo's for our characters, BUT, we do not want them to look realistic!!! Save that for the Weekly Drawing Challenge thread. Here the most important thing is your imaginations, ONLY!!!
I will start by submitting 3 reference photo's, 2 choices for a main character or you can use both, and 1 for a background. The idea or objective is to create your very own cartoon character and scene. There is no right or wrong with this, it to have fun and be creatively unique. happy.gif

The thread will be open for two weeks as a trial to see how it goes. If it is successful I will continue to kep the challenge going for all that want to participate. I do not care what mediums are used as long as they have nothing to do with computer graphics. The main idea is to draw. I would prefer that all cartoons be done in color. Like I said any medium is welcome and that includes painting if you choose.

Please let me know if any of you have any other ideas for this thread. For fun I have decided to add a already drawn and well known cartoon coloring page. Adults feel free to save the pictures and print them out for little ones. People participating in the challenge are more than welcome to re-draw the cartoon their own ways or the same way just no tracing. You must submit your original cartoon as well before you can do the bonus cartoon. AND they too have to be in COLOR!!!

Also..as far as the reference go..they do not have to be exactly like the pictures posted. We are using our imaginations for a cartoon, so you can add comments, thoughts and leave certain things in a picture out. The main idea is to use the lizard and mouse for reference characters and to create a background. They do NOT have to follow the same color scheme, but they have to be in color!!

wub.gif Thanks for participating and have fun using the RIGHT SIDE of your unique BRAINS!!! happy.gif
Aviation
Haha, sounds fun. I should expect some entertaining pictures.

And it sounds like you really thought this through, Venus.
Venus
biggrin.gif Aviation, I did. I thought it all through and then put it into words which was probably harder than actually doing the drawing itself. tongue.gif

Since I am the Hostess of this thread I thought I would be the first to share my cartoon picture I came up with. Its not that great but it was kinda fun. I turned the lizard into a girl. blush.gif I used fine point sharpie markers and colored pencil on canson sketch paper. It took a total of about 2 1/2 hours and I am happy with the results for a first time drawing of a cartoon. I even added a little comment in a cartoon bubble.

I am really excited about this thread and look forward to seeing other peoples post!!! So come on Everyone, lets see those imaginations!!! wub.gif

I decided to call my cartoon: Lost Liza Lizard...
kim1963
perfect example venus ... nice job lol
vhpayes
Cool Idea. I'll be putting mine up tonight.

Venus, I like your drawing of the chameleon.

Brian David asked an interesting question, about what is a cartoon.

If you are interested on the subject I suggest reading John Kricfalusi's Blog.. He's the creator of Ren and Stimpy.

He has some strong thoughts on the matter and is offering his insights everyday on his very cool blog.

http://johnkstuff.blogspot.com

Enjoy!
Brian David Dekter
smile.gif Venus what a great job you did with this and I love the reference pictures....and what a spectacular sketch you did with Liza Lizard.... I love it wub.gif I think it's great and very creative, and with what is known as a speech balloon. This is going to be fun, and by coincidence one of the reference pitures you provided , I sketched in graphite on my coffee break at work months ago. I was surprised to see it...lol smile.gif I also did this Snoopy for you last night Venus with background color.....he is tired because he is thinking of ideas to make this a fun challenge....lol. I am honoured to be your co-host...

Vhpays....I am glad you are going to take part and share your talents with us....great site I find the subject very interesting.

I was thinking to make this interesting that I will add some historical notes or punch lines to some of my posts.....here is the first.

"The original and historical meaning of a cartoon came from the Italian and Dutch/Flemish and the word was known as Karton"

Happy drawings everyone, Brian.IPB Image
racedolls
oh my-- venus that is so great!!!! you just really inspired me.
brian- i always love your cartoons. you always do a fantastic job
now i have think think think... this is really out of my element.
i am checking out that website vh--i always love those cartoons
Lori
Venus
biggrin.gif Ok something was brought to my attention for this challenge as I stated that I would like the cartoons to be in color. I wasn't thinking when I said that and decided to bend the rules a little for people out there that may not have all of the art supplies that I do and have decided to say that graphite/pencil drawings are ok too. So don't be afraid to create a cartoon because it isn't in color!!

Brian, great cartoons!! I knew they would be. blush.gif

Vh...thanks for the link I and I am sure others will love the information on the blogs!!! wub.gif

Happy Drawing, Everyone!!!

Ohhh!! And Lori I can't wait to see what you come up with, its not really that hard!! wub.gif
racedolls
well i think it looks aweful but here is my cartoon anyway. my very first cartoon.
the caption got kind of lost it suppost to say "LIZA where are you"
Lori
painter48
Awwwwwwwwwwww, Lori your mouse is so cute. Nice going.

Venus - I love the hat on the lizard....cute.

I have a question about this challenge........just trying to make sure I got the directions correct. The cartoon must involve the background and at least one of the characters? Or can any background be used?
Brian David Dekter
Thanks Venus,

and thanks... Lori for your comments.. smile.gif I love the mouse you did he is so cute and I am glad to see you join in I hope to see more.

Painter I am glad you have joined us and I hope you will share your talents with us ...I know you are great at cartoon's amongst many things . Feel free to create your own scenery if you wish I believe Venus wants us to be creative and has provided the references for people who would like to use them.

Well ....every one can laugh at mine ....it is my first time I have used water color paint . I also used ink...it sure is a challenge but sure was fun...I am going to call him ..."Flyer"
painter48
Good job Brian for the first time using those paints. They are tricky but you can do some nice things with them. I'm not very good at all with watercolors. My painting is mostly with oils and acrylics.
Watercolors confuse me. wacko.gif

Yep, I'll join in on the challenge......I have a couple ideas floating around in that old "brain" of mine. LOL

I just wanted to get the directions straight. Basically, I can make a cartoon of anything I want and don't have to use the above references? That the references were supplied for those who couldn't think of anything?

If I don't do it right, I might have to sit in the corner like Rose did in the last Drawing challenge......I don't think I can draw a person in a dunce hat.....LOL

Venus
tongue.gif LOL Painter, I am not that strick!! Just you..I was wanting people to use the background and reference characters to start off the challenge. I think if it is a success then I will turn it around and just let people do whatever cartoons they wish. The scenery I really don't care about and it does not have to be the same just the main characters. I hope I explained it better. wub.gif

biggrin.gif Lori awesone job!! The mouse looks sooo sweet. I love it. "Liza Lizard" is away from the bridge down the hill a little....LOL
painter48
Thanks Venus for clearing that up. That helps quite a bit. Now I know what direction I'm going in. (backwards,LOL) hahahaha

Watch for my cartoon, coming soon.................
kim1963
wow you all have done such a cute job ......I will start mine today .smile.gif
racedolls
hurry kim it is alot of fun- freeing like
brian you did really great with the watercolors. i was thinking of pulling mine out and trying something.
venus-- i know some people dont need references but that really helped me a great deal. thanks for putting them up. i have another idea maybe. i might try it out tonight. maybe even with some watercolors.
Lori
Venus
biggrin.gif Go for it Lori!! I love this thread already and I can see others are loving it as well. I had hoped it would go like this. Its fun not having to have everything realistic looking all of the time, or at least thats my opinion.

wub.gif Joanie and Kim, hurry already I am dying with anticipation waiting to see your cartoons...laugh.gif
kim1963
This was much harder than I thought lol
painter48
Kim - that was a good one! Great cartoon!
Venus
laugh.gif OMG Kim its great!!! I am still laughing!! Too cute! laugh.gif
Cyn
Everyone is so creative. I hurt my brain trying to think of something and this is all I could get.. laugh.gif

If you can't read it, the shoeshine boy is going out of business because everyone wears tennis shoes now. Even he is wearing Nikes.. rolleyes.gif
kim1963

Alright I turned my lizard into a chameleon (Thats why it is brown) who is hungry for a hiking mouse. It only took me 45 minutes.

By the Way, I just added a bunch of more stuff to my album. Im excited, so I am advertising.
painter48
Paulette - ROFLMAO that was really cute. I love it. How original.

Aviation - that was a good one.

Everyone is doing a great job.

These are really very good cartoons. At least we all get a chuckle.
***************************************

Here's my 2 part cartoon.........not really funny but I liked doing it and I did use the characters

[attachmentid=2885]

I didn't put candles on the cake..........................Sorry, Cyn, didn't want to embarrass you. LOL

I will probably post another one later this week if I have time.
Nellie
Very good every one love your pictures. Great idea.
racedolls
wow everyone is doing great with these cartoons. kim love that one of yours. very clever.
Lori
Cyn
Okay Painter, you got me all mushy inside. What a surprise. Really great cartoon and it would make a lovely card. You should go into business making personalized cards for people. tongue.gif

You are right about the "BIG" birthday but it's okay because I will be 6 perfect 10's. laugh.gif

I really love it. Thank you. I'm touched. wub.gif

Cyn

P.S. This was really appropriate because unknown to you all, my nickname is "mouse". Ha Ha Ha
kim1963

Nice job on the lizard!

As far as thought bubbles................................see my cartoon...........They don't actually come out of the mouth and they don't have to come all the way down to the characters head. Just have them pointed in the direction of the character. If there is only one character as in your cartoon, there only needs to be a few of them (odd numbers are always best) coming down because there is only one character speaking or thinking.

Mine are not bubbles but more like arrows, because my characters are actually speaking out loud.

Hope this helps.
Venus
tongue.gif Wintermind, your cartoon is great!! Comment bubbles are just little bubble with a v shape on the bottom going towards the characters head in thought. With the little tiny bubbles before it. Not hard.

Painter, great job on your little Birthday party mice!! Too cute!

tongue.gif Cyn, Happy Early Birthday!!! 60 is a great age!!! (OOpps did I type that out loud?) laugh.gif

happy.gif Aviation, I loved your characters outfits as well! he looks sharp...

smile.gif Lori, Fantastic job!! you made it into a cartoon strip! It is sooo cute and humourous I love it.

I can see everyone is really enjoying this thread and I am glad. At first I wasn't sure if it was a good idea or not but now I think a whole lot otherwise!! Thanks all who are participating and keep up the great work..I love the cartoons!!!
kim1963
Winter at least you gave it a shot and it turned out just fine .. this is a new aera for alot of people ...and the fun things is .. they are all our own creations so they are perfect . who is to say the heads tooo big lol or he is not really that green lol . smile.gif
Aviation
Well with cartoons the exaggerated body parts makes it look like a cartoon. I think painter did a great job with that. In cartoons they always have a thick outline like she did.

Im glad you like my little mouse. I didn't really feel like using colored pencils for that so I used oil pastels but then I realized I made the characters small and had to use colored pencils for the mouse. Its the only time I really would use oil pastels.
Brian David Dekter
Wow.....you guys are great! I am really enjoying this.

Painter you had me in tears on your opening posts... laugh.gif

Kim ...I knew you would come up with a great one I think you are great at cartoon's , I like the furniture you put in and the little character sleeping is cute. Glad to see you. smile.gif

Cyn, that is a real cute shoe shine boy, I love it ......and it is so great to see you...I hope you will do a few more for us. smile.gif

Paulette thanks for the laugh.gif laugh.gif What a great comic strip . I really enjoyed it.... smile.gifI see you are great at cartoons also.

Painter....I think that is the sweetest most adorable cartoon you did for Cyn. wub.gif I can't think of a nicer person to do that for, she is a dear freind to us all. smile.gif

Aviation glad to see you take part....some great work in your gallery, I admire it.

Wintermind , great sketch......I like the O...Canada....lol

Okay now time for Snoopy 101.......lol.....Painter you may find this one interesting...lol

"Karton".....meant strong heavy paper or past board and was a full size drawing as a study for further drawings and Cartoon's were typically used in the production of Frescoes, meaning any of several painting types.

Happy drawings, Brian.
painter48
Cyn - you are most welcome. That is so funny that you're called "mouse". Good thing I didn't make the characters lizards! hehehehe

Wintermind - that was a good cartoon....very clever.

Brian - thank you for the kind comments. I seem to be getting bamboozalled into drawing cartoons again when I prefer not to. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Here's a picture of my version of myself as a South Park character that I did a few years back.

[attachmentid=2912]

This is so funny to me. I used to smoke back then. I have long dark hair which I do keep in a bun when I'm painting and I do wear glasses and I do make a mess when I paint. I am also a Big South Park Fan.
So this is my self portrait as a cartoon!
Brian David Dekter
laugh.gif laugh.gif Painter that is grrrreat! I love it and very funny .....thanks for posting it....did you say bun .....that is my nickname for Cyn........lol.....so you like South Park ayyy, okay this is a good one for you then I did a few months ago.....and I added Stewie... smile.gif
painter48
Oh Brian - I almost wet my pants laughing at that! Thanks, it was awesome. That's my man, Cartman! My husband is a policeman and he has a T-shirt that says "step out of the car, please".

Here's the website where you can go to make your own South Park Character. Its kinda fun to play with. Its a newer version than the one that I used to make mine. I also made mine and then did some alterations on Photoshop like adding the paint blobs and the cigarette and the easel and brush and the "Art 101" sign on top. It was fun to play with. I haven't played with the new one yet.

You gotta make one and post it for me! www.sp-studio.de

Also, a little side note. When my husband and I go out to a crowded restaurant and the hostess takes down your name...................our last name always confuses them so we always use Cartman! Just our own stupid joke. LOL

"Cartman....table for 2, Cartman,.....table for 2"

kim1963
you guys are so funny .. love your cartoons smile.gif
here is a kinda cartoony drawing I did for a friend of mine kids .. they love ferrets . I posted in another thread but I will share it here .
Brian David Dekter
Painter...... laugh.gif laugh.gif that is great storey you also have me in tears..... I will take a look at that site.....thanks, it sounds like fun. smile.gifI will try to surprise you... I have allot of respect for the Police, I used to arrange for them to have ice time in our Recreation centres to play hockey and used to Zamboni the ice for them....lol....I have met many...........

and I hear that Brenda sketched for the law,

I did one of her lessons and now I can draw...... laugh.gif

Kimbo...... that is a real beauty, I love ferrets too, my best friend had one for years her name was nipper....I am glad you shared that with us.... smile.gif You sure have a talent.

Night all, I am working on a card for Cyn. IPB Image

Brian
Venus
laugh.gif You guys and gals are just too funny at times!!! Family Guy and South Park are a couple of my fave cartoons as well. I also like the anime Full Metal Alcahemist (spelling???). Its pretty good and has a cool plot. So needless to say I stay up late alot during the week just to watch Adult Swin on cartoon network. I used to draw Disney cartoon alot when I was a teenager, now that we have the cartoon thread and it seems to be going well I might just start again. My favorite cartoon has always been Tinker Bell and Goofey. wub.gif
Cyn
Okay Painter, it's all your fault. I went to the website and here is "Southpark Cyn"...

Tee hee.. It even looks kinda like me. laugh.gif
painter48
Way to go Cyn......................nothing like making fun of yourself...................frees your soul. LOL

Maybe everyone should be challenged to turn themselves into a South Park Character?

Brian David Dekter
laugh.gif laugh.gif That is a good one Cyn......Okay Painter now I can finally go to sleep.... smile.gif

I could not seem to save the picture so I had to print it and scan it.....here is South park Brian.....that was fun
painter48
That's cool, Brian and Cyn............................Anyone else?
