I apologize in advance for the long post but....
I just got my first set of colored pencils. I don't like them very well.
I Have also have a set of mechanical crayons. I hope they color in better.
This is a cartoon called FIXED. A cartoon based on the cats that I live with. I spend some of my evenings at home with a six pack of beer laughing at the cats. I hope to do more "FIXED" cartoons later. I made the mistake of drawing each panel on a seperate page in my sketch book. I tried to put them all together, with no luck. Because by the time I shrunk them down to a manageable size, you couldn't read the words. Plus I'm not sure I have the settings correct on my scanner.

Aviation - yes, unfortunately you grew up in another generation than some of us and didn't get to see the old time cartoons. Actually, they were pretty violent and very slap-stick type cartoons. The animation was extremely choppy and nothing like you are used to. They didn't censor them as much as today.
When Disney came out with his animated cartoons, it was like night and day. We very seldom got to see color cartoons either. Mostly because we didn't have a color TV because it wasn't available to the public yet.
So if you wanted color cartoons, you had to go to the movie theater to see them.
Sounds like the old story: Father to Son: "We had to walk 3 miles to school in the cold and snow and rain in the olden days. " LOL
My husband and I still like to watch some of the oldie cartoons. But I can still appreciate "some" of the new ones too, especially South Park.
I understand the other cartoons. I have a dvd of the older bugs bunny and stuff but aren't some of the modern cartoons more violent? Imagine if there were a cartoon around that was like Itchy & Scratchy from Simpsons. They would avtually show blood and everything.
Willac- Your cartoon makes me laugh. Goodjob.

Williac - ROFLMAO - that was a great cartoon. If anyone has ever owned a cat, they can appreciate that cartoon! I haven't seen you on here lately, but you sure made up for it with that cartoon. Can't wait to see more, more, more, more. LOL

Ok, I finally got to finish the cartoons using the pictures for this challenge. It was tough to think of something with a mouse and a chameleon so, only the one has a vague reference to a mouse. The last one is what would happen if you gave your finger to a mouse...
Did I mention I have a phobia of mice?
BTW that was a funny cartoon with the cats...
This is fun :-)

Thanks for all the positive feedback. I've have another one in the works. I tried a scan test with the mechanical crayons I have. They really don't fill in very well either. I'm thinking of trying some kind of markers next to see how they do. does anyone have any tips for what to use. I'm wanting something that fills in easily without having to scribble like mad. But I also need to be fairly detailed, for example coloring in the eyes on the cats.
THANKS WILLIAC

vhpayes - Excellent - Bravo - I love it. I knew you would post something spectactular. Did I mention that I really like it alot. I was playing with a similar chameleon type figure, but I just couldn't get it right. I love all of your backgrounds and the colors and details. Wonderful cartoon.
Williac - One of the things about drawing is that you can use any medium you want. Some will work better than others. If you don't want to buy the expensive brand of markers. Then try using Crayola brand or Sharpie brand. I will tell you that the paper you use will make a difference also. When I use markers on sketch paper they tend to bleed a little. When I use them on computer paper they don't bleed and they are nice and crisp. Or, you can use Bristol Vellum or they even make a peper just for markers. However, if you don't use acid free paper, then your drawings will turn yellow over time.
You will have to experiment with different papers and markers to see what you like best. I started by using the Marvy Markers (found the scrapbook area of the stores) and they have a brush type point to them and are very smooth. It feels like painting when you use the brush type marker. Then I decided to try the Prisma Markers and they are so much superior to any of the others, until I tried the Copic Markers and they are by far the best. (but the most expensive).

Thank You for the kind words :-) I must admit this is a lot of fun and my juices were flowing today.
Venus - I don't have a scanner here so I am drawing the cartoons using flash. It was the best program for me to draw freely using the brush tool like a real pencil. I tried photoshop and a few other programs, but FLASH felt the most organic to me and it's easy to add color.
Williac- In reply to your question about what you can use to fill in large areas quickly but also detail... I recommend ART STICKS for the large areas and PRISMACOLOR PENCILS for the details on a smooth paper and you can do the line work with marker. Like the caricature artists at Sea World.
Since I was in the mood today, I did this political cartoon.
It's Bush on his high horse trying to rope in the ex-soviet/eastern block countries, but Putin isn't going to let her go so easily...
Hope you likey

Williac - I think you've found a great cartoon character that will provide you with lots of "material". hahaha Kind of like Garfield only different type of character. Your Man-cat is very funny. No wonder your co-workers like to keep your drawings. Keep up the good work and keep experimenting with those markers and pencils.
I will ask one favor of you........that you would size down your pictures before posting. If you make them 200kb that would be perfect. Those of us with dial-up won't have to wait forever to see them. And when you post them to the thread, make them small like thumbnails.
To do this you............Open it just like you are posting to the thread, type in whatever you like then scroll down to where it says FILE ATTACHMENTS then click BROWSE and then locate the file where ever it is stored on your computer, then click ADD THIS ATTACHMENT...........then wait for it to upload.........then you Click on the button that says ADD TO POST and it will put your picture onto the post. (you can't see it in the post at that point....it will say something like "attachmentid 2347" I know this sounds like a lot but it really helps.

Feb 27 2007, 06:41 PM
Kim - yep, I noticed that a lot of the newbies haven't been making their pictures small enough and most of the time I just don't bother to open them. I miss out on a lot of really nice pictures too, because of that. I have timed it and sometimes those large pictures take up to 5 minutes or better to upload.
Maybe we should make a plea to those that don't have dial up to make smaller pics. Or a reminder of some sort.

Thanks for all the favorable replies.
painter48: Do you mean 200kb for all of the panels combined, or for each
individual picture? Right now each picture is 180kb or less. On my paper each panel
is 5 inches square. I need to figure out what I'm doing wrong. According to MS Paint,
5 inches is 361 pixels, and Each of my panels , once scanned are weighing in at about
1000 pixels square. I was kind of annoyed by the large pic sizes, but it never occurred to me
that the large size was a pain for others. Sorry! I WILL do better.

Williac - thank you so much for resizing those pictures. Yes, its 200kb per picture. I see you went back and did it over again. It was such a big help. I surely did not want to miss out on your cartoons. They're great. I know that J-Lynn has it worse than me. Her internet connection will cut her off before she can even look at a large picture! When you live out in the country, that is one thing that you can't get - high speed internet or delivery pizza. LOL
I'm not that good at figuring out how many pixels equal whatever size. Or how many inches equals etc. I use photoshop 7 and I just play with it until I get my pictures around 200kb. After I started doing it, I've gotten pretty good at guessing about getting the size right.
Again, thank you so much.

Williac thanks so much for resizing those!! It took forever to load up on my measley dialup and and another minute just to read the next post from others, LOL. I do love your comic though its great. Keep up the fantastic job!!!

Williac I really have been enjoying your cartoons....they are great.
It is great to be back I am still a bit sleepy from my knee surgery but I am feeling much better today.
I decided to color this character I created in the last draw challenge I hosted named after a really talented cartoonist Lilly....I also wrote a poem to go with it.
She is a birdie in a hat, should I draw her with a cat.
She is kind of mellow , do you think her hat should be yellow.
She is great at art , and she has a great heart.
She is a real thrill, and her name is little lil.

Ok Everyone, the two week Cartoon Challenge is coming to an end and with that I would like some opinions for the next challenge. What people would like to do, do you feel we should use the references or should we all just make suggestions each week on different subjects to draw? Should we just draw whatever cartoon comes to our fancy or should we try drawing famous cartoons? Or should we just do a little of all? I am open to anything. Thanks in advance for any input!!!

Venus - I liked what you did by providing a subject - it helps the juices to start flowing. But I also like the idea of posting whatever cartoon comes into your mind also. So maybe it should be both.
Or maybe it should be a
Cartoon Thread - a place where you post only cartoons or caricatures.
Why not make up a poll and let it run for a week and see what kind of answers you get? You can provide several options in a poll and not just yes or no answers.
kim1963
Mar 3 2007, 02:30 AM
I think people seem to love this thread .. my idea would be to keep it going doing a poll will only slow it down ...maybe you could provide a couple of images for those that need the push and just let people have fun ...this was a great idea and people seem to feel pretty good when they come in here .
thats just my thoughts

Kim - you're right - everyone likes it here - that's because everyone loves a cartoon. We all need a smile once a day to keep our spirits up.
IMHO Keep it running the way it is until the poll is finished or go ahead and start another one while the poll is running. It sure can't hurt anything. Just so long as you don't stop doing the thread. I think it was very well accepted. We have quite a few cartoonists out there.

Thanks for the positive feedback on "Fixed".
I really love the idea of an "open cartooning thread". I'm not sure If drawing my cartoons does much to improve my drawing skills, but wow is it fun!! I really need to do other drawings, but with my limited time its so tempting to doodle out a cartoon instead.

Thanks you guys for your imput..I too feel the poll is just slowing things down so tonight after I help my parents move I will start another thread with different reference pics using the same opening, Brian and I are discussing ways of teaching cartoons to people who wish to do them and want to learn how to draw cartoons and I just happen to be learning cartoons from my current study unit from my online artist course. So I am thingking of ways into writting what I learn to teach others in my own words. It really is a great guide. I am enjoying it alot. I always loved cartoons and my dream when I was younger was to be a Disney Cartoonist. Then I grew up...lol...and life took another direction. So for now and the new challenge the thread will remain the same regardless of the poll with any cartoon acceptable.
