Full Version: My first drawing to post
Drawspace > General > General discussion

Well, I just put my first pic on the forum. Its from the lesson about seeing the shapes in a horses head. At least it looks like a horse, so I guess thats a good thing. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share their early drawings. I would love to see where some of you have come from. It certainly would be inspiring to see how far you have progressed. When some of us beginners see the beautiful work being posted, we think we will never get to that point. If however, we could see the early drawings, we would think, maybe there is a chance for me.

Just a thought

Jon,

Welcome to drawspace! This is a great idea!!! I started drawing 3 yrs ago (after a 20 yr break).
Here is the very first thing I drew...using a grid. Marylin Monroe. My daughter asked me to do this and I haven't stopped drawing since. The last 2 are my most rescent!

Hi there Jon - nice to have you on board.

My history is very short - I have only been drawing for three and half months. The first drawing I ever did was of a cartoon character that featured prominently on an online game I used to play called Cactus Jack! biggrin.gif

[attachmentid=3036]

Many hours of study every single day since then these are a few of my principle works of the last two weeks:

It can be done Jon. Approach it with humility - research, study and practice with all your might and you'll get there!

BTW - I no longer play online games! biggrin.gif - it's much more fun to draw!

Rose,
You absolutely amaze me!!!

Rose,

You have come an incredible distance in only a few months. Did you just use Brendas courses, or were there other methods of study? All I can say is, WOW!

Hey hang on a second... this thread is about Jon and everyone else not about me! ... although I do thank you all very much.

Now to answer your question Jon. Yes, I started off with Brenda's lessons which are all fabulous and so very well constructed. I did many of them and there are a couple I still want to do. From there I searched the internet and read and practiced every single free tutorial I could lay may hands on. I also bought books about particular techniques.

But what helped me most was being here on Drawspace. There really are some wonderful people here to whom I shall be forever thankful. I learned so much from the advice I received particularly from Miss Jeanette and Miss Laura, Miss J-Lynn and Miss Joanie. Participating in most of the challenges kept me on my toes all the time.

So keep coming here Jon and do take part in the challenges - they are open to everyone no matter the level of expertise. I particularly recommend the Sketching from Life thread for some real hands on right brain activity. Keep reading, keep posting, keep asking. Keep drawing and building your gallery.... and most of all be proud of all that you do! It's fun, honest!

Rose,

That is exactly what I intend to do. I have been searching the net, looking at drawing books, etc. There is so much information available, sometimes hard to weed through it all to find something that works. Can you suggest any other sites, that might be helpful? I have downloaded and printed a lot of the lessons here, and am going through them. I am doing Bitty currently. I have always loved to draw, even did some paintings many years ago. Strangely enough, one of the things I wanted to be when I grew up was a cartoonist. Who knows, still might get there! How much do you draw each day? I work fulltime, and when I get home am tired, so it takes an effort to draw. I try to spend at least an hour each evening.

Hi Jon,
welcome to drawspace. I'm a newbie here and concerning drawing too. and I also learned with Brendas book (Drawing for dummies) and it is great.
Your horse looks so good, I wish my horse I tried some weeks ago would have been so good, but mine looks more like a untellable something with 4 legs.... rolleyes.gif
Maybe now it would be better, but I have no heart to try a horse again. *lol

The cat at the window was my first drawing after reading the first pages of Brendas book, [attachmentid=3041]:

and these are the excercises from the book

This forum is great to learn and to get motivated and supported. All the people are sooooo nice. wub.gif

Rose,
Lol - Mr. PopFu is funny - and I must say all are right - it is terrific to see what you learned within a few weeks or months!

Hi Jon,
Our motto here is practice, practice and oh yeah, practice. Here is my first after reading some of Brenda's lessons in Oct. The next is one I did before the portrait 101 class and the third is the one I am working on for portrait 101.

Of course I am still learning and my by eye stuff (no grids) still leaves something to be desired so here is a current picture showing that also. From the sketching from life thread (quick sketch).

I really like this thread! I actually went and found some old JPEGS of some old images from around highschool and went ahead and uploaded them to an album. smile.gif

I haven't looked at my older stuff in awhile. It's so weird and cool to do that!
