Hi I thought it would be interesting to find out what kind of Art everyone here likes best ..we all have our favorite ways of drawing or painting and we all have our favorite types to look at ....along with what is our favorite medium to use and so on .
My favorite to draw with is colored pencil ...almost all my stuff in my gallery is CP ..but I really like a new style that I have just been seeing recently last couple years or so and thats the pen and ink ...I love it because it looks like the subject but in a outlined coloring book way ..I have tried to do it myself but it never looks good to me ...and one of my favorite artist amoung the many wondeful ones here is Adolfo ...his style using off colors is amazing to me .

If I had to choose a style, it would be watercolour. I love the freshness of a good watercolour. Having said that! I can appreciate all kinds of drawing/painting. There are some brilliant artists on this forum! And it's been a pleasure to look through some of the galleries. With that in mind! I went out today and bought some coloured pencils!

I'm going to give it a try and see how it works for me!

Hi Kim, I am still trying to find what medium i personally prefer, but i am really loving to learn the watercolors for the moment.
as for artwork to view that is also a difficult one for me to choose, I love them all and have seen so many beauties in so many different mediums, but I guess I would have to say Oil portraits of Old have always fascinated me.
And who can resist that perfectly painted bouquet setting? the bouquet ones that really seem to catch my eye are also oil paintings.
I guess I would say If my arm was bent and the bone threatening to protrude, I would choose Classical Oil artwork.

Sure! If I walk into a gallery, and look at something and think.. "What the heck is that??? " I don't like it!
But I am a HEATHEN and uneducated in the ways of the art world, so I guess it is understandable to not like things I do not readily recognize!
Here is an example on a colossal scale

airscapes - good example (for me at least). I have never understood the message these two were sending, maybe I'm too much of a hick. Had to do a paper on their umbrellas in Art Appreciation - wish I could have bagged what I wrote, it would have made for great fertilizer.
My favorite medium is still graphite, because it's where I'm comfortable for right now. This will evolve as time goes on - I'm already feeling the urge to go to colored pencils, and have tried 2-3 pen and ink projects. Who knows? Watercolor and oil painting are not out of the question.
The kind of art I like to look at would really have to be oil paintings, from any period.

I suppose I am the one who has to say it ..
I love whatever I am in the mood for and am inspired to do at that moment..
I can tell you what I don't like easier than what I do like .. I don't like Acrylics and only find them useful for craft projects. I am not saying that those who use them are not the best of bests ,
I just do not like them for me..and I do not like doing flowers no matter what medium I use..The flower trading cards was a nightmare for me.. but I challenged myself..sadly I didn't learn a thing..
One day I may be on a roll with Graphite , the next day watercolor ,,and even the new found medium of Liquid pencils.
This is what I LOVE THE MOST ...
Having the avenue to use what ever makes me happy..
Coming to Drawspace has been the most habit forming daily activity I do. Just hearing how many have the same thoughts and feelings as I do is as real as it gets .. I doubt anyone here will say otherwise..

I wish I was comfortable using water colors or oil but I have tried and it just seems to looked piled on or smeared ...I see others doing it and think wow I can do that ...( hardly lol).
I feel I am uneducated in the ways of the art world as well because I am self taught I hold no art degrees and I remember a long time ago when I first came here and Jeanett was talking about a color wheel lol I felt so dumb as I knew nothing about a color wheel ...but with patients it was explained to me .
As far as drawspace being a daily activity ..I confess it is for me ..from the first time I started to now I have only been gone a few days ...I started as a member then was a Moderator and now I have joined the Administrators team ..I really love this place and feel Brenda offers soo much for everyone .

My first love in art is portraiture and figurative, representational work. I love the intense detail that graphite and cp can bring, but have pushed myself back into watercolours and oils lately, some being quite abstract. When in museums and art galleries my eye is always drawn to the old masters or to detailed works in oils. I love seeing the world through others eyes of hundreds of years ago as well as those of current times.

I love illustration - I would still like to write and illustrate children's books.
I am greatly influenced by the old master's, as well. I particularly like Pieter Brueghel, Joachim Patinir, the Limbourg Brothers, the prints of Albrecht Dürer and the many artists of the Illuminated Manuscripts. But, I could probably find something in all of the older works that influence in some small way my own work.
I have a difficult time saying I like one medium over another. I love everything you can do in art and I suppose that is why I love teaching where I can actually do all kinds of art.
I have always said, though, that if you told me I could only do one medium and no other for the rest of my life, I would choose drawing because you can do it anywhere, with so many different tools, on just about anything.

All my stuff is mostly in coloured pencils but I want to try new stuff as soon as i'm done coop I want to try some kind of painting because my sister bought me this kit with paint and I hadn't had a chance to use it with school and all so I'm really hoping i'll have some time soon. I really like to look at the artist's choice of colours. And for an artist I admire here on Drawspace is Sveta, she always has really colourful art and is not afraid to use colour.

I have studied different techniques, pencil, cp, charcoal, watercolor, pastel, chinese ink, calligraphy, terracotta, and start with oil. I believe that finally, chinese ink is my preference.

I started out doing oil painting and at that time, I loved it. But I changed to graphite as I could do that anywhere and I didn't have a lot of cleaning up to do or drying to wait for. I tried the water based oils and didn't care for those either. So my medium of preference is graphite, and colored pencil comes next. I have tried some watercolor and it's not for me. I would love to try scratchboard. They get some beautiful artwork from that. My favorite subject matter is animals (dogs first) and people.
My favorite to look at is varied. I like realistic art. I like when an artist has their work cropped to make a bold statement. I like things with rich colors. I don't care for abstract.

If we get into art to look at! Then I would have to say anything that has taken some effort to to produce! I was having a discussion about art with a colleague. He was playing devils advocate and defending Tracey Emins
unmade bed as a work of art. I can't look at it in that way. What we do here is art. In my opinion, art takes effort to produce, as well as talent. I can appreciate anybodies attempt to produce a work of art. The challenges we attempt here turn up some wonderfull images! This to me is art. It matters not if the artist uses oils, or pencils or burgers! There has to be some effort involved!

Tracy ermin or emine or whoever the heck she is SUCKS..
course that is just my personal little opinionand the bozo that chose her to present in london or where ever SUCKS too..I cant believe that is what they are churning out of the high priced schools and colleges these days, she is an ANTI artist...I cant stand her work or what she seems to stand for 'shock value' thats all and nothing more..

Very interesting to hear of everyone's differing tastes. I'm no fan of "Our Tracey"'s "art" either, though she's quite entertaining in that horrified fascination "watching a car crash in slow motion" sort of way.
It will probably come as no great surprise that I like 17th-19th century art, particularly oil painting - Caravaggio, Veronese, Velazquez, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Turner, Holman Hunt, Leighton, Poynter, Collier, Bouguereau, Gerome, Tissot, Millais, Alma-Tadema, Sargent, Repin, Waterhouse, Zorn - and also a lot of the work coming from the new "classical realism" movement. I've mentioned before the work of my friends
David Kassan and
Graydon Parrish(I like a very wide range of art - Klimt, Warhol, Hockney, Giotto, Michelangelo, Chagall, Monet, Caillebotte, Van Gogh, Carolus-Duran, Kandinsky, A. Wyeth, Van Eyck, Hopper, Dali, Rockwell..... but the question asked what I liked
best).
Why? I'm attracted to the play of light across surfaces, the evocation of physicality, the depiction of emotionally powerful moments or evocative scenes, and to figurative painting that communicates something of the psychology of the subjects, a story, a motivation for behaviour or action.

What art do I like? ............................Well I am a bit eclectic in that if the light play or subject matter or colour appeals then I like it - I do like things that I can recognise, but having said that I don't mind some cubist work, and I guess my absolute faves are the Fauves. I just love the rich colour!
In the way of mediums my first loves are graphite and pastel...........just can't resist getting my fingers in there and getting grubby! And I have said elswhere on this site I am attempting to contol and tame watercolour.......but the whip and chair method isn't successful at all and I think I need to stop fighting it and just try to gently guide it (or at least make it look like we are both going in the same direction

)

My favorite medium is graphite, and ink & markers. Their easy to carry around and not too messy, and you still can get a great range of values and textures.
I really like comics art, and really admire the giants of the genre, artists like Alex Ross, Dave Gibbons, Frank Miller and Jim Lee. And also the new guys, like Leinil Francis Yu, Whilce Portacio or Jeffrey "Chamba" Cruz. Their stuff is mindblowing

Oh! my stomach hurts from laughing reading this topic. Well, I completely agree with “airscape” and “oliverandjazz”. Also, I am fascinated with realistic art work. The medium that I prefer by now is graphite. I fill good working with it but I would like to try pastel, watercolor and color pencil.

Ok everybody...don't gang up on me...hehehehe
well first of all let me say that I LOVE Graphite as a medium and also pastel and water color...I mainly work in graphite of course...still so much to explore there...don't see myself getting board with it anytime soon.
As far as what I love to look at...well everything!!! I love impressionism, surealism, I didn't like cubism to begin with but now that I understand it a bit better I can appreciate it. As far as "The Unmade Bed" and "The Gates"...well in my book they are works of Art...and I'll expalin why. These Artist took the time to imagine, plan and create a work that makes us stop and pay attention...it took time for them to create a composition, consider the effects of light and shadow, balance, values and in the instance of the gates even the sound of the material blowing in the breeze...The Gates Expresses to me the effect the urban jungle has on nature and vice versa..and also mans need for beauty...color and light and shadow...the Unmade Bed is a social statement about, to me at any rate, the breakdown of the family and parenting...of an imperfect person living in a perfectionists world. That is what art is all about it makes you stop and think.
There is an artist I aspire to be like.. some may have heard of him...His name is Armin Mersmann
http://nimra.deviantart.com/gallery a master of graphite art He has a series of works....he draws broken lightbulbs...he can spend uptoward 800 + hours on some of his works...he also does portraiture...not sure how long he spends on light bulbs but I'm sure it's alot...anyhow...you would say his drawings are art because you can see how much time and effort he puts into his work, but lets just say instead of drawing lightbulbs....he spent time breaking bulbs and then selecting pieces from the debris and then arranging them and creating a compostion and creating a lighting situation that showed a wide range of values the play of light and dark in the middle of a plain white floor...I would stop and wonder why? I would also appreciate what he had done and find what it means to me...it meant something to the artist...would you call it art or would you grab a broom and a dustpan?
That's just my opinion...try to keep an open mind...and Happy drawing,
Laura

I'd grab a dustpan. In the case of the Gates, I can see that as a work of art. Time and effort have been spent planning and sourcing materials, errecting the gates with teams of workers, etc. Not only that, but the effect must have been pretty stunning from all vantage points! In the case of the unmade bed, it's an unmade bed. There is nothing to indicate any artistic endaevour whatsoever! I think of Tracey Emin not so much an artist, more of a freeloader! The 'Unmade Bed' was entered into the 'Turner Prize' competition; which carries a considerable cash prize! In all the years I have followed the 'Turner Prize' I have found the exhibits to be generally uninspiring, or downright baffling! I think Turner is turning in his grave! I'm all for new art, but honestly! Can you put hand on heart and tell me that a piece of wood six foot long and 2" x 2", separating one space from another is a work of art? It's a threshold. They've been around for while now! I don't need an 'artist' to tell me I'm stepping from one space into another space; and that makes it art. And I will never accept an unmade bed as a piece of art! Just the detritus of a slovenly person. I have a 22 yo daughter and an 18 yo son who regularly supply me with this kind of 'Art'.

Yes, but that doesn't mean the creator is an artist! When I look at Google Earth and see the beautiful patterns of fields of the English countryside, I imagine it as a work of art! But it was never created by artists.

All I'm saying is that not all art is my cup of tea, but that does not mean that it isn't art. I don't have to like what someone does that's the beauty of free will, but that doesn't mean that someone else out there isn't an artist just because I don't like what they do.
I do have 4 daughters who don't make their beds and I wouldn't call that art either...hehehehe...I call that a daily battle...
This has been a very interesting conversation...thanks, Steve.

I like to draw using a variety of mediums: pencil (plain or coloured), ink, charcoal, pastels. Whatever keeps it interesting for me.
My favourite art is a well-drawn or painted piece. When someone has created a picture so well drawn (it doesn't have to be realism), I'm always completely fascinated by it. If a piece of art is far out there and trying to push the boundaries of what we consider art to be, okay, I can respect it and perhaps find it interesting if I think they're conveying their message well. But it won't go much further than that.
Also, I really love to see the progression of amatuers like myself. Looking through galleries or forum posts that span months or years and going from their first attempts to their latest work. It's always an inspiration to see how their efforts can result in a vast improvement of their skill. Maybe it isn't technically classified as 'art' but whatever.
