I have to say that it has truely been a while since I put pencil to paper. I used to commit atleast six or seven hours to drawing a day and was a pretty advanced artist. I feel very frustrated now because I cannot even commit an hour to drawing. I try and draw but after a couple of moments I just quit and put it away to collect dust again. I guess I am just wondering if there is anything any of you can suggest to help myself get back to where I used to be. I truely miss the little things I used to come up with and the feeling after a good drawing. Please any suggestions will be truely appreciated. Thanks in advance.

biggrin.gif Hi Chad, Welcome to Drawspace!! I am glad you like the site and hope you enjoy it here. I know after many years of not drawing its hard to get back into I did it for years. Collected supplies and let them catch the dust or my kids ended up getting a hold of them and ruining them. I got tired of doing nothing but sitting around cleaning all day and watching TV the rest of the day. I am a stay home mother so that explains it. I just got bored. Then one day surfing the web I found this wonderful site and have been inspired to pick up whatever material i can get my hands on and draw. But you have to want to do it in order to continue. Everyone here is great and helps each other out. We have quite a few different challenges going on the the general Discussion forums that might help give you some inspiration, why don't you try some of them? I hope it gives you insentive. Again, Welcome. wub.gif

Chad, your problem is obviously lack of motivation. One of the reasons is probably lack of challenges. What you need is meeting other artists, either online or just in your area. Just talking about art, sharing ideas and drawings can be a great motivator.
I run two large design sites myself and I see it all the time how excited people get when they’re meeting the right people.

You will meet people who draw better than you which will inspire you to do better and you will meet people who draw not as well as you which confirm your ever growing skills. You could also consider subscribing to an art magazine like 2Dartist. Also consider to visit online galleries on a regular basis, which can also be a great source of motivation.

It’s however important that your mind is with drawing when you actually draw. If you for example have worries about switching jobs, moving to another place, financial issues then you often (not the case with all people) don’t have the right ingredients for optimum motivation, determination and creativity.

Also consider to draw something else than you normally draw or experiment with different techniques, media, tools, etc.

The other thing you should consider is to find out why you lack the motivation right now, when you didn’t have that problem a while back. Something must have changed and you need to sit down and relax to find out what that really is and believe me that you will find your answers, you just have to be patient, it might take a few days, but only if you’re really motivated to find these answers.
