Hello and Welcome to Imaginations Equal Cartoon Creations!! There will be two Host for this challenge, Myself (Venus) and Brian David, our wonderful Drawspace cartoonist!! This challenge is intended for us drawers to use our unique and exspressive artistic imaginations!!
To start off, Brian asks us all; "What is a Cartoon?"
: Is it a social comedy, a political comedy, a editorial opinion, a design, or a drawing or painting intended for satire and humor? Or is it a ludicrously unrealistic one dimentional portrayal of something that can be entertaining and fun?:
( I would like us all to ask ourselves these questions when we start our cartoons)
Since the Thread has been a huge success, we are going to continue. I am submitting a few more reference photos than the last thread had. They way everyone has more ideas for their cartoons. Also, I have decided to let everyone submit any cartoon they wish to draw on the thread. So get them brains working!!
The cartoons do not just have to be in color, I am well aware that many artist prefer just drawing in ink or making their cartoons black and white. Once I get things under way and finish my ideas the thread will be changed into more about learning to draw cartoons and different ways to come up with ideas for cartoons. For now we are just going to keep the thread with the few pictures I have selected.
Also..as far as the reference go..they do not have to be exactly like the pictures posted. We are using our imaginations for a cartoon, so you can add comments, thoughts and leave certain things in a picture out.
Thanks for participating and have fun using the RIGHT SIDE of your unique BRAINS!!!
As I stated somewhere before my style is a little like cartooning. But I aways sucked at the traditional cartooning. Of course there are many different styles in cartooning. I agree that cartooning takes imagination and good control of the lines seem to help. Most of my work tends to be more like photorealism. I wish I could stay away from this style and apply more imagination to my work.
I know there are some very talented artists who work in photorealism. And I'm sure it demands imagination. But the camera can do photorealism. The human eye can interpret the essence of a personality of a person in a way that no camera can. This in my opinion is what it takes to do cartooning.

Brian - that was a great cartoon! I was ROFLMAO - its soooooo senior citizen like. hahahaha
Here's a funny story. My mom has been in a nursing home for the past year - she used to have impeccable manners etc. A very proper woman. Now, every so often I catch her and she will "belch". Not just a little belch, but a very large one. Even in a restaurant. It cracks me up......it's just so out of character for her to do that. Then to top it off, she never says excuse me. hahahahahahaha
Venus
Mar 7 2007, 06:07 AM

LOL Joanie, isn't just like a parent to turn out like that in old age. my family on the other hand wouldn't even know the meaning of "manners". Trust me they can be gross at times.

Ok here is my cartoon for the challenge. I was totally stumped on what to do so I did the best I could. I like Kim, am not a cartoonist but I do at least try. I really like drawing with fine point marker and pen I have decided and need to invest in some better ones. Or at least a larger supply. I think Sharpie makes a big selection now for their fine tip pens. Will have to look around. Prismacolor Markers are way to exspensive for me so it would have to be Sharpie..

Painter.....I finally took your advice and got a few prisma color markers.....I just bought 6 basic colores to try but now I am sorry I did not buy a set....they were 6.50 each and I think they are by far the best quality I have used.....I could not wait to try them on this sketch..... this was my project for today and it was a great challenge and took my mind of my knee for a couple hours...lol.....I did the rough with 0.5 mechanical pencil and then inked and colored......
Lori ....some more Looney tunes for you...

Brian - Great picture - those markers really do make the difference and they are so much better than the cheaper ones. But, you paid way too much for them!!!! They should have only cost you about $3.50 to $3.75 each. You can combine them with the cheaper crayola markers for the colors that you don't have in Prisma's. I found that using marker paper is also helpful.
Try going online and see if you can find them cheaper or on sale. Dick Blick, Jerrys Artarama, ASW Express, Cheap Joe's, Mister Art, Rex Art, Pearl Paint. I started with a set of 24 and then added some greys and I will pick up one or two colors at Hobby Lobby now and then. If you have a Hobby Lobby, you can go to their website and get a coupon for 40 percent off. (they have them every other week)
Williac - I'm seeing a great improvement in your cartoons also - good job.

painter--thats exactly what i did with the prisma pencils because i couldnt afford the big set- and now i have a pretty good selection going on.

Thanks Lori & Kim....
Williac....thanks , Some times I design the way I sketch the characters in..... on this one I only made a slight change from the reference photo I was looking at when I sketched it.....some times that happens also by accident...lol....but this way there is no two the same... you should get those prisma markers, I think you will really like them.....
Painter, I had a feeling I paid to much for them.....lol....I was in a art store and the prices on every thing were really expensive..........thanks for the info, I will take a look because I would like to buy some more ...I am hooked on them now and I think they are great quality...and honestly Joanie I did not know about marker paper so I will also check into that....I also bought 12 prisma color pencils and find I can even blend them with markers in a pinch , as I did this with Tweety on his feet....I went over the pencil with yellow marker and it seems to blend in good....thanks again for your help.
Have a great day every one, Brian.

Mar 9 2007, 11:41 PM
Kim - where did you find them that cheap? I've never seen them so cheap, the lowest I've ever seen is $2.79 on sale!
kim1963
Mar 10 2007, 03:20 AM
per pencil ??? wow thats high .. I go to a place called O'leary paint company .. they sell paint like house paints and art supplies.. they were 1.10 I think I got them onsale but my pencil right here says 1.37 so I must have ...they had a 140 peice set for 89.00 thats was a very nice set ..
