Brian David Dekter

Hi all,

welcome to Snoopy 101 Rocky and Bullwinkle challenge, my name is Brian David your host. Although I am no expert on this,

The Rocky and Bullwinkle show

It all started in the late 1950's with the production of the pilot "Rocky The Flying Squirrel" the original show was about a group of forest animals running a T.V. station created by Jay Ward and Alex Anderson. The show broadcast for the first time in 1959 on ABC with the name "Rocky and Friends" and aired continually until 1973 then soon after went into syndication.

The storey lines also included elements of short cartoons featuring ( Fractured fairy tales, Peabody's improbable history, Aesop and Son, Bullwinkle's corner, Mr Know it all. and one of my favorites, especially being Canadian, Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties)

The Rocky and Bullwinkle show have had the rare honour of being elected into the animated elite that has pervaded the annuls of pop culture and medium of television as we know it, and left an everlasting impression on the way Cartoons were made.

My Challenge

Simply draw one of the references I have provided below illustrated by the original creators, or you may use your own reference if you wish or create your own Cartoon. You may use any type of medium you like, please no computer graphics, all drawings must be hand drawn. You may use your computer for text or color if you wish but please post your original drawing first.

Hope you all enjoy this challenge,

Happy drawings,

Brian.

I kept thinking of the Dr. Seuss Moose while looking at Bullwinkle.
So I gave Rocky a new home after he was shrunk by Peabody.

Fractured Fairy Tales was my favorite part of the show.
Try YouTube for finding your fairy. That's where I found my reference image.

Thanks Marisa I will check it out! I loved the Fractured Fairytales.

Oh and here are my surprise characters - I loved these "bit" characters in Moose & Squirrel cartoon.

Here is Captain "Wrongway" Peachfuzz

And does anyone remember Gidney & Cloyd the moonmen?? I loved these two and the way they got things wrong - I can remember one saying " Kidneys...it takes kidneys!" and he meant brains - to this day if someone in our family does something stupid someone will pipe up and say "That really took Kidneys!" tongue.gif laugh.gif

laugh.gif Ha , you ladies made me laugh , Marisa this is really funny and I love how you did the outlines in India ink, what a fantastic and creative drawing, great surprise to see you! thanks for the smiles.

Hi Sue, I remember the captain but not the moon men, they are really cute characters , these drawings you did are amazing.

Just a quick one I did , two smart dogs with kidney's for Sue smile.gif
bigs
Thanks Brian........I have to keep my dogs away from the computer or I'll have a campfire in the lounge!!! ohmy.gif

Actually I used to have a dachshund, Fanta, and she would stay inside when I did an evening shift - now there was a dog who had kidneys! She used to get onto the coffee table and stomp on the answering machine buttons until the red light went off, and she would do the same with the remote until the TV came on. I would get home at 11pm to find the 2 dogs ensconced on the lounge with the TV on, just kickin' back! I am so glad that I could go to work to keep them in the lifestyle they had become accustomed to! laugh.gif Thank goodness I didn't leave the matches out or I am sure I would have come home to marshmallows over an open fire!

Anyway here are some more that I couldn't resist - Snidley just begs to be done, and I had to try the genius and his boy, and didn't everyone love the flowers popping up allover ending with Bullwinkle sprouting out of the ground too?

Hi Sue,

laugh.gif now that's funny , those dogs of yours had class, and sure know how to party!

and your drawings bring back memories with Bullwinkle sprouting out of the ground like a flower, and Snidley looking so real, I can almost hear his voice, these are fabulous drawings , thanks so much for doing this Sue, I enjoyed seeing this.

I don't have the hang of colored pencils yet and I prefer graphite because you can just go wild and it's an easy fix most of the time. I find colored pencils unforgiving. Here's my fairly quick dynamic duo. laugh.gif

Great work Cyn!! You really got a 3D look to Moose & Squirrell!! But I do know what you mean about coloured pencils, they look as though the whole thing is covered and then you scan it and suddenly it looks like its contracted mange????? I have found out that if you burnish that sketchiness seems to disappear (mostly).

I couldn't resist Boris & Natasha, actually I found Boris' simple face quite difficult for some reason??? And I did another of Rocky too.

That is it though, I need another challenge I think or I'll try and draw the narrator laugh.gif

Wow Cyn, I love it!!! I couldn't come close with color pencil, I find when I try, I prefer to use Conte, seems like less work ....I think you got me started on those.... smile.gif beautiful drawing Cyn Kid.

Sue , these are fantastic!!! I like the color you use and the way you do the background too...

Any one have a reference picture of the narrator for Sue laugh.gif

Some really great drawings, I have been enjoying this.

Thanks for the kind words. Excellent jobs everyone..

Now for the trivia...... and a picture for Sue.. laugh.gif

There were 2 narrators. Edward Horton, my favorite from all the '40's movies, and William Conrad. Mostly Conrad. A lot of them did the movies in the '40's.

Walter Tetley was the voice for Sherman Peabody
Bill Scott - Bullwinkle J. Moose
Charles Ruggles - Aesop
Hans Conried - Snidely Whiplash
Paul Frees - Boris Badinov
June Foray - Rocket "Rocky J" Squirrell and Natasha Fatale

Edward Horton
bigs
Cyn, I just loved Edward Everett Horton and his voice was so distinctive.......like Sterling Holloway and Andy Divine........you could be in the next room and know when they were in a movie. It was so interesting when I first saw Edward Horton in a movie. he spoke off-screen and I thought that is Edward Everett Horton the Narrator! And I had to watch the rest of the movie just so I could get a good look athim!
