... mixed media.
I know there are a lot of you out there who are very good at this. Adolfo for instance does it beautifully.
So talk to us about it... what do you mix with what? when do you do it? what do you aim to achieve by it? does it make your work easier or is it more of a challenge? is this something you have learned or picked up from somewhere or does it come to you instinctively? .... is there hope for the rest of us mere mortals?

i have seen jeanette do watercolors with ink and it looks fantastic. i love that look but i have no idea how she does it-- if there is rules and what ink she uses. also i have seen graphite pencils used with color pencils and that is a great look. hmmm maybe a class on something like that?

I usually mix charcoal with my graphite drawings to get the deepest blacks possible, without the sheen of the 9B...

My warhorse...

is a mixture of water colors, pastels, and pencil crayons...
I also use pencil crayon for details over my pastel drawings, after I have fixated them, to keep the pastels in place...

And now I am learning how to 'paint' pastels, pretty cool stuff...here is my first one I am attempting...

Wow, Paul, I have always loved your work.. The loggers are amazing.. Until Rose started this thread, I didn't know you could mix the media so many ways. Thank you, Rose and Paul.. Now all I have to do is start learning to work with color.

This mermaid was made with just about every medium you could think of. If I wanted a certain color or value or texture, that was the tool I used. Pencils, inks, watercolours, colored pencil, chalk, airbrush paint, oil pastels and believe it or not, the hair on the mermaid was colored with covergirl eyeshadow. I even used the little applicator brush. LOL. There is also a hint of translucent glitter glue in the wave that is splashing on her torso.
I have no idea how the original is aging.

You can pretty much mix whatever media you like that will accept mixing. It depends so much on the effect that you want to achieve or in my case, what happens to be at hand at certain times when I need a particular colour or effect.
As for my pen and wash drawings, they're pretty straightforward and can go either as a pen and ink drawing first with watercolour wash or the reversal. First the watercolour drawing, then some finishing touches with ink. I also use coloured pencil with ink, graphite and ink, charcoal and pastel and watercolour - there are so many combinations. And then you get into the realm of multimedia with encaustics and texture, etc etc. That's a whole new art form in itself.
So really Rose, its down to experimentation in many cases. Yes there are some traditional mixes such as pen and wash,b ut there are as many variations as you have ideas.
Lori, if you want more info on pen and ink and wash, I'll see if I can come up with a tutorial for it soon.

Maybe I should start working on the idea department eh Jeanette!!
But really a tutorial on the lines suggested by Lori would already be a great start.
