hydrus watercolors

Hey guys, I have decided I want to really pursue learning how to do these watercolors, though I am I must say pretty frustrated with trying to tame them..not enough color, too much color, ack! lost the white paper, etc..I have rented 2 videos and learned very much about the process and in my searching and researching it has come to my attention that most artist prefer tube watercolors to pan, so off I went in search of some when I came across these
dr. martin hydrus watercolor..liquid highly concentrated..these are the ones I decided on and have purchased..I cant wait to get them in and see what we have happen, oh what fun and wonderful messes i shall create..
anyway, has anyone here tried them? what is your opinion on them?
the link is to cheapjoes but you can get them cheaper thru ASW..which is where i bought mine last nite

Hey guys, I have decided I want to really pursue learning how to do these watercolors, though I am I must say pretty frustrated with trying to tame them..

I can understand your frustration, I experience the same feeling looking at my attempts, yet i know from masters of this medium that results don't come after 2 weeks, months or even 2 years but it requires a lot of practice and patience. If you remember Adolfo told us about starting with simple stuff like a petal, a leaf, etc.
WC is known to be the most difficult medium in watermedia so give yourself time and take this beginning just like experimenting and exercise.I am more relaxed from the stress of attempting to producing watercolor works.
The tubes yes, they are better than the pan WC.Yet i don't think that the answer is the supply but the experience which comes with lots of practice.
I also noticed in my case that I have good days for WC and bad days.I guess that the difficulty of this medium comes from the fact that you have to capture the subject in a few strokes quickly as a few minutes per session as opposed to Cp for instance or graphite in which you take your time and can do a subject in days or weeks.
So don't get discouraged, it will come in time, you just need to be persistent and remove any guilt or frustration before you start. The few attempts that you posted have already good signs that you learn and produce good work. So give yourself more time to grow in this medium.
Wishing you good luck!

Thanks Elena, I have lots of stuff that I have learned locked away up north in the ol noggin..putting it into play is entirely different..lol..I have made some real messes..I have also learned you cant work off the pan, like i have been trying to do, well i cant anyway, you must mix enough color up to get you thru your work..I have been wetting my brush and dipping into pigment..now that lil tip alone should help me progress.

I am glad to see you go for it too carol, that is what i said, oh what the heck! like nike, JUST DO IT! biggrin.gif I cant wait to see what you give us with them..I am really excited to try them. I really went for it and bought all 3 watercolor sets..again, JUST DO IT..from the review at cloud9 a 1/2 oz will last forever and these are 1 oz bottles, plus I am interested in learning to airbrush and they can be used in a gun as well..so I figure even if I never master the tech of watercolor I can use these in many other ways.

I notice there are several types, a set for acrylic, set for watercolor and set for india ink, I wonder if those could be used for tattoos?

Well. Kay. you really must have started something, because I checked your link, and got all excited, and the set of 12, 1oz are all out of stock. laugh.gif Just my luck..
oliverandjazz
oh no..I think I may have ..lol..Mine were shipped out today, so by the weekend or monday i should have them.
keep checking they may get more, asw was the cheapest but cheap joes, dickblick and several other places carry them as well, I hope you can get some too

Kay honey, which colors did you get to start with? Set 1, 2 or 3? Or did you get them all at once? Dick Blick has them for about $2.85 more a set. But as to the basics, I have never touched a brush to a paper. Duh! Total beginner here. laugh.gif

hmm.i think 2.85 is for perhaps 1/2oz bottle? I got all 3 watercolor sets from ASW; each set has like 10 or 12 colors (cant remember exactly) each set also has 1oz bottles. I too am a total beginner..it will be fun to have a few of us learning these together

oops my bad, reread, i see 2.85 more money per set..doh!! got ya now..

Lucky ladies ....we have lot of craft stores near by but I have three birthdays and a graduation comming up so art supplies will have to wait ...but I am very excited to see how these work so please post your art here for me to see. smile.gif
oliverandjazz
u bet kim,

also do you think that india ink type of the hydrus would be good for your tattooing?
oliverandjazz
ASW has them in stock here

Its always fun to play with new art supplies. I haven't used these, but imagine they are similar to acrylic inks that I use. I dilute them in water and they're quite intense, then I use them in watercolour pour backgrounds, etc. You can get the same effects with tubes of watercolour that you dilute with water as well. I'll be interested to see your results.

This is a link to a piece I did using acrylic inks, watercolour and printer's block ink, creating a gyotaku print.

I am having fun playing with these colors, cant wait till i can actually make something biggrin.gif I think I have potential though, wish I had someone to stand beside me though and rap my knuckles as I seem to make the same darn mistake repeatedly..DOH!! ohmy.gif
and hubby says I better come away with at least one thing from this purchase I deem fit to put on the wall..which by the way remains empty..just waiting for that special masterpiece I know by jeesum I am going to create someday biggrin.gif happy.gif
oliverandjazz
ooh...my order will be here tomorrow between 1 and 3 which makes me happy and excited, however, honey says dont get too excited, we have lots of 'stuff' we need to do this week end and now that my stitches are out I should also be able to get the recylcing done, the dump run, the first mowing of the year, the grill drug out, and on and on and on..so I will have to work most of the weekend, I am just so eager to get a good mess going biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
oliverandjazz
ok guys here it is. My first masterpiece in so many ways. I know I know, lots to learn, but for the very first time using these hydrus, doing crystal and roses, not to mention the background, I think it all came out pretty good..I shall try it again later, with more practice under my belt
I hope you guys like it

now the hydrus are great, but it takes more than the touch of the dropper as they would have you believe for vibrancy. I like em though, no probs with em here.

OOOooooooo Kay, that's beautiful and the colors are so vibrant.. I had to postpone my purchase because of medical problems. (Kidney stones to be removed) So I will have to wait until the medical bills are done. But, I definately want to get some Hydrus.. biggrin.gif
texaslady-59
OMG Kay .. the painting is truly VIBRANT !! I delayed ordering thru catalog because I was going to drive out (100mile trek) to the Falls and check out Hobby Lobby And Michaels last week end .. Ended up having to work.. ,,Bummer,, so maybe next week I will get a few days off to make the trip to purchase and have time to experiment with them.. I love to scout out all the new stuff in the Art stores... touchy feely..

I love the colors you chose !! You are catching on fast !,,hope to see more !!The Crystal looks so real !

oliverandjazz
Cyn and Carol, thanks so much for the encouragement, this took ME (prob not someone skilled) about 8 hours to do. (with a hairdryer) lol..
Carol, if me a beginner can do this, girl I can't wait to see what you make them do.

thanks again

hugs to both
Songsparrow
smile.gif ****! I wanna try them now. More expense!
