I think, that's something you have to learn to see. Just take a Pencel 4b or 6b and draw every dark area you see as well as you can. After that put it away for some hours and then look at it again and draw the areas you have forgotten.
This is the my way to practise shading. Good luck. wink.gif

Hey there, good start, I would suggest working in your darks, and working out to your lights, using some BluTac (or the stuff you would use to put posters on the wall without using thumbtacks...make sure to use ONLY the white...) and a kneaded eraser to pull out your highlights...allow your darks to 'frame' your lighter areas, and you will see your drawing start to 'pop'.
I hope that helps.
Cheers.

smile.gif Laurie, yes I agree with Sunset and Horsewhisperer, you need to start working on the darker values to bring out the lights. Have you tried working on shapes and shading them? It really helps to learn the process of overall shading techniques.

A good way to shade that would be hatching, Brenda has alot on hatching and seeing high lights and the dark spots and kneaded erasers help alot. happy.gif I think he looks good so far though good job.
