Hello everyone!

Welcome to Snoopy 101 The Smurfs Challenge! My name is Sonia and I will be your host for the next two weeks. Here is some brief information on the creation of these delightful cartoons....

The Smurfs

The Smurfs (Les Schtroumpfs) are a fictional group of small sky blue creatures who live in Smurf Village somewhere in the woods.

The original name "schtroumpf" and the accompanying language came during a meal Pierre Culliford (a Belgian cartoonist better known as Peyo), was having with his colleague and friend André Franquin in which, having momentarily forgotten the word "salt" Peyo asked him (in French) to "pass the schtroumpf". Franquin replied: "Here's the schtroumf - when you are done schtroumpfing, schtroumpf it back" and the two spent the rest of the weekend speaking in schtroumpf language. The name was later translated as "smurf" into English.

On October 23, 1958 the Smurfs made their first appearance in a story of Johan & Peewit in “Le Journal de Spirou”. Their creator Peyo had worked previously at a number of drawing jobs. But the introduction of the Smurfs into Spirou would change his life. At first, the Smurfs were just secondary characters. But they soon became stars in their own right. After a few mini-albums, their tales began to appear as full albums. Then the film “The Smurfs and the Magic Flute” appeared, with music by Michel Legrand. Soon, figurines, plushes, toys, (hit) records and above all the TV shows brought them right around the world. In 1981, the celebrated cartoon duo Hanna & Barbera started work on a TV series for the NBC network in the USA. No fewer than 256 episodes were produced.

The Challenge

All levels of skill are encouraged to participate.

Simply draw one of the references I have provided below, created by Peyo, or you may also create your own or use any reference you wish. Please no computer graphics in this challenge. All drawings must be hand drawn. If you wish to use your computer for color or text, please post your original drawing first.

I have never been a Smurf fan, so I think I might sit this one out.

But I'll pop back in and see what everyone else is doing.........and perhaps if I get the "schtroumf" urge over the next few days I might just give it a go.

I do not know how to thank you for your participation in the challenge, and honestly I am impressed with how you managed to draw this amazing smurf while receiving an I.V. treatment! Thank you so very much! But I think you really should get a rest now...
And do not need to thank me for anything because, in fact, I am loving the experience and it was fun to prepare the challenge...

I just had a lot of fun drawing and coloring with cp my own smurf... I mean, smurfine...
I used another reference I found on the internet.

Brian!! Oh dear an IV , hope its only for anti-biotics or something not too evil..........watch out for those wielding sharp instruments and will be back on your feet soon.

Oh and by the way Smurf fans.....I was doing some Smurf surfing and found something unusual.........can someone tell me why all the Smurfs except one are male????? Talk about your population imbalance. How do they get baby Smurfs? It can't all be down to the one girl??? Or do they maybe find them in the cabbage patch (or under a mushroom??). It seems a strange world they live in. Or maybe I haven't seen the whole story yet.

Well Sue, I think you are not looking at the picture from the right angle...
Girl, that Smurfine (or Smurfette) is the luckiest female on earth!! She gets to have all the men for herself!! She can even chose a different one each day! That´s why there aren´t babys on the village. It´s atmosphere is too promyscuous!!!

... Just kidding!

Have you catched the smurf fever already? Waiting for your contribution... Maybe you could create a different female smurf from your imagination. It would be fun!

Hey, look what I found! The single baby smurf in the whole village! Where did it come from? A stork dropped it off, no one knows from where. What a mystery, huh?

Looks more like a picket line there Sonia! ha ha ha!! I like that you popped Snoopy in there.

And I like your lovelorn Smurf Katdyd...............................I think I will have to give the little blue folk a shot ...........now I'll just have to look up some more images.

Well, if I remember correctly. The Smurfs are all supposed to male and brought by storks. However the Smurfin was originaly evil and created by Gargamel and had black hair to boot, Sassete was created by the smurflings to be a little sister to Smurfin. And for Nanny Smurf, it is still unclear if she is a naturally occurring female Smurf or if she was somehow created via sorcery like the Smurfin and Sassette.

Ingredients for a female smurf according to gargamel: Blue clay, sugar and spice but nothing nice, crocodile tears, half a pack of lies, a chatter of a magpie, and the hardest stone for her heart

So there you have it.

Wow, you know so much about these lil' characters, thanks for the history lesson. But that strikes me as a bit sexist, the only females being created by an evil villain with awful ingredients! Man, that's harsh.

As far as I know there are also no female dwarfs. Smurfs and dwarfs never have a wife.

What about Gnomes??? Are all the little people of folklore only male??? Like Leprechauns??? What is it with the little people??

OK i have been Smurfed!

So here are my attempts........but I noticed an interesting thing! Papa Smurf in the picture I drew had a tail!! I did not know they had little puppy dog tails! So here are my attempts at Papa Smurf, Smurfette and a Smurf house (although this could house the faeries at the bottom of my garden - and they have more than oone girl too ).

MarimoLurv, I obviously found the Marilyn Monroe version of the Smurfette

NVA, great drawing of farmer Smurf! What are you using for colour? You get such a smooth finish, not like my coloured pencil attempts.

Thanks for the compliments Sonia, I played with watercolour pencils to get the mushroom 'roof' colours to sort of merge and slide together, was very happy with how they turned out because I did them all in ATC size (2 1/2" x 3 1/2"). I am trying to practice my drawing small.

Oh, so that´s why the colors of the roof look so bright, beautiful and smoothly blended! I tried the same effect on the walls and closet doors of Smurfette house with just mixing different colored pencils but it was a little difficult to achieve! I never tried watercolour pencils... I think I must check that out! Thank you so much for sharing, Sue!
