Last saturday i noticed that my google.com pages came with the error "the page cannot be displayed" or "error 404". At the time i had picked from the web a malware catcher 2009 program, fake cleaner of viruses.My gmail, blogger and all google related pages except search and maps cannot be dispalyed from my computer still even if i got rid of the malware.Curious enough is that from my husband's computer i can logg on to all my google accounts.
What I did:
- reset the settings in my computer;
- called the ISP to see if they block my access;
None of these worked.

Any idea anyone?

have you tried uninstalling that? I have never heard of a 'fake' cleaner before, also try restoring to your last good save point

Hi Elena,

I googled "Malware Catcher 2009", and indeed, it's rogue malware itself. Unfortunately, there's a raging battle out there. You'll find hundreds of Web pages, all of which tell you how to remove this malware -- mainly by downloading and running another free malware removal tool, which itself is also likely to be fake. It's hard to know what information to trust.

Personally if I were you I would bring it to a local computer repair shop, the independent kind, not "geek squad" or such. Do you have any kind of commercial virus protection installed on the machine?

You can try to restore you system to a restore point prior to the issue. Sometimes this works and will not cause any additional problems if it does not work. If you do not know how to do this, use your husbands computer to search on "Windows Restore point"
Good luck

THanks, guys. The malware was annoying so I found a couple of removal tools online that were i think concocted by the people who created it in order to sell the "cure", since they specifically say will remove that program. Anyway I got rid of it,and then of these removal tools, but I don't know yet the real damage.
My virus protection expired so i bought another Mcafee total protection 2009 which requires 256 MB of memory and I have installed only 128MB. So i ordered more memory(1 GB) and i will take the tower to a best buy shop for installation.Maybe Mcafee will find something that disabled my google pages.

This is an update of my PC condition.So I added 1 GB of RAM memory. I hoped that will be able to install MCafee total protection 2009. All programs like firewall, anti-spam, anti-virus, anti-spyware failed to install even if i checked the software and in the store worked fine.Apparently no virus was detected by Microsoft or Mcafee Stinger on my PC but something wrong is going on because not only my Hosts file was highjacked but I do not have a HOSTS file in System32/Drivers/etc.
So the tool that can restore my hosts file cannot create a Hosts file for me or at least this is the error message that I get.
My google searches are now redirected to other search sites and i still receive the message that my computer is at risk if I do not check it up. Any spyware removal tool that I try to download seems to fail working or tells me that My pC is fine.
Tomorrow Saturday morning PDT May 16 I will take the PC to a check up.

My coming watercolor challenge is in limbo as I do have the files online at my domain name and can anytime give the extensions here, but with my given problem we might contemplate looking for a host.
Please let me know if you are interested in hosting with your pictures or mine the Watercolor challenge here ASAP.

I'll take care of the hosting for May/June. I should be still able to check in periodically from internet cafes.
Sorry to hear about your computer woes. Take care, Marisa

if all else fails, you may need to reformat your hard drive. just make sure you have everything backed up and have install disks for all your software. I have gotten viruses where that seems the only way to fully get rid of it.

Thanks, redfury. I fixed the problem yesterday.I took it to a specialist who confirmed that my host file has been hijacked. He created the file again and installed spybot on my Pc which detected immediately spyware, adware, malware and a trojan.Then destroyed them. I also installed Mcafee total protection 2009.So for the time being i save myself of the ordeal of having to reinstall Windows and back up.
