Hi everyone,

I am Brian David and it is my pleasure to be your host for this challenge.......

Mother Henrietta Suess Geisel often soothed her children to sleep by chanting rhymes for wich this artist became so well known. His name, Theador Suess Geisel , most of us know him as the great Dr. Suess...I admire his sketchy style and his creative writing ability as well as those gadgets he is know to draw. He has inspired me for the idea for this challenge, I hope you all have fun.

Part One

Create one character of your very own and write a few rhyming sentences to go with your character.... or a short poem.

Part Two

Keeping in theme with this challenge, I have provided one reference photo for you all to draw.


Please all sketches must be hand drawn, and please no computer graphics. There is no limit to the type of medium you use , other then no painting. You may use your computer for text if you wish.

Good idea Brian - but I don't think I understand Part 2........................Part one says use your own character, part 2 says use the Seuss character. Which one is it? Or am I just wearing my blond wig today? LOL

Joanie, I am not sure on that either. I know he asked me to run the thread for him as he wasn't able to be on alot because of computer problems. So I would say to do the first part then just do a favorite Dr. Suess character. If I am wrong he can take it up with me when he returns.

it is just my luck that my computer broke down on April fools day,lol.... but it is getting repaired and I should have it back, I hope by the weekend......

Since I am on my computer at work, I have taken one of my characters from my gallery and wrote a few sentences to go with her..our very own Cyn from Drawspace inspired me to do this........she is a dear friend.

Hi Brian,
Unfortunately I am just too busy to draw at the moment (which means I'm getting paid!) but couldn't resist part 1 of your challenge! So, attached is quick (& corny!) and I cheated a bit by using a computer to add the text. Rest is pen ink (over pencil) and my grandson's crayons. Really enjoy the cartoon challenges - hopefully will have time to make a better contribution!

I have started a sketch of Sam but I just realized I used the wrong reference photo it is opposite...I am with out my computer so please forgive me....I may not be back until this weekend so I would like to wish you all a very happy Easter..

I have had no time to draw this last couple weeks as Brian knows.. So here is a quick thing just to be doing something for one of the challenges. I hate it when I have no time.

i have a question: does the cartoon have to be Dr. Suess style? i always seem to miss stuff cause i always ask obvious questions, but do they?

The cartoon itself doesn't have to be in Dr. Suess style, it just needs to have a Dr.Suess style poem or phrase to it. Thats the first part of the challenge the second part is to copy (not trace) the Dr. Suess cartoon reference photo that Brian provided. Which doesn't have to be in color unless you wantt o do it in color.

Brian, I have been really well thank you for asking. I haven't been participating much in the challenges either. I have been busy working on my portrait drawings. I recently did a graphite drawing of my grandmother from a picture I found. Now I am working on the same portrait in colored pencils. So basically being really busy as well. Glad your computer problem has been fixed!! It sucks without one doesn't it?

Glad you are well Venus it sure is great to have a computer again.....Venus, I must say I love your portraits that you have been doing lately ...I really lack practice and confidence with them....when I first joined Drawspace Jeanette helped me so much to get started, I think I need to start to ask for help again.

Brian thanks. When I first started working with portraits, I thought of them as a challenge and wasn't up for it. Then I decided that if I really wanted to do illustrations it was one of the main things I needed to learn in order to accomplish that. So I decided to give myself more patience and work harder on them. Seems I have been practicing them forever now but come to find out that when i take my time I actually "LIKE" doing them and watching the faces come to life with each drawing. Plus having them come out looking like who they are suppost to works a great deal as well. I really don't think you need "help", you just need to have patience with yourself and lots of practice time. I often find my self going to bed later and later when I get so involved. Just believe in yourself and you can accomplish anything is my motto. Don't always listen to others, listen to yourself.

Thanks Venus, that is the best advice anyone could give....I think we all have one main thing in common and that is a passion for it...our hearts go into our drawings.
