Hi All,

Brian has been very brave and honoured me by allowing me to host this Cartoon Challenge.

I have been hosting the Childhood ATC Swap and while tripping down memory lane I came across a favourite comic series of mine from when I was very young. The Harvey Comics stable of Stars were a staple in my home.

Harvey Comics were founded by Alfred Harvey in 1941, and his brothers Robert & Leon joined him soon after. Their most prolific artist was Warren Kremer, and their logo is the well known Harlequin Jack-in-the-Box:

The best known Harvey Comic's characters are Casper the Friendly Ghost, Wendy the Good Little Witch, Richie Rich, Baby Huey, Little Audrey, Little Dot, Little Lotta and Hot Stuff the Little Devil.

I remember all of these from my childhood, but if the cute little smilies don't appeal then you can always hunt up Sad Sack another of the Harvey Comics Star performers.

The Challenge

All levels of skill are encouraged to participate.

Simply draw one of the references I have provided below or create your own or use any reference you wish. Please no computer graphics in this challenge. All drawings must be hand drawn. If you wish to use your computer for color or text, please post your original drawing first.

Ready?

Just grab your pencil, pen or brush and let´s cartoon!

And remember the cardinal rule is to have fun!!

Sue

Just a quick one I tried this morning,

Sonia, have a lovely break, and even if you don't get to do any pics I hope you'll pop in and see what we are all up to.

I just had to laugh at that Brian! I would have expected to see a Woodstock on his shoulder, like a pirate's bird - but I love Snoopy's intellectual look with the glasses.
crashman891
Hey here are a couple of my favorite characters from Harvey comics. I remember reading these as a kid. Sorry for the low quality, my scanner is busted.

So, Shadesofblue. You can draw one of the references given, find your own ones on the internet or create your own characters. There are only three basic rules:
1. stick to the theme (this time it's Harvey Comics);
2. no computer graphics (at least the line drawing has to be done on paper);
3. have fun!

And no, there's no time limit. You can submit your drawings whenever you want smile.gif

I'm looking forward to seeing your drawings TaniaBee and Shadesofblue smile.gif

Here is my first attempt at a challenge and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I sketched in pencil and then coloured with my daughters Crayola crayons, which were really nice to use.

Sorry the image is so large. Having problems with my scanner.

Here are 3 I did for the Childhood ATC swap.

Great ghost Audrius, I used to love the Ghostly trio that Casper lived with.....they always seemed like they loved their haunting sooo much!

That's a good looking Wendy, Shades.............if you look up Crayola Artist on Google you'll see the work of a guy who does the most amazing work in crayons. Its well worth a look to see the fabulous stuff that can be done with them!

Good to see you here Tania, and I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Great to see the cards Jeanne...........I always love your bright colours and I am glad you did Sad Sack for someone different from all the "smiley" kids I posted as examples.
Brian David Dekter
I admire all the drawings from Siksno, Shadesofblue, and Jangra....outstanding!

Jangra got me thinking of Sad Sack, so I thought I would try a quick sketch,

Happy drawings,

Brian.
bigs
Oh dear Brian...........looks just like the type of trouble that Sad Sack would get into!!

Well I got on a roll yesterday and kept drawing Harvey comic characters..........Baby Huey, Little Lotta, Casper, the Ghostly Trio, Ritchie Rich, and Wendy, all colored pencil and watercolour pencil.

Everyone's drawings are fantastic.
Thanks Bigs for telling me about the crayola artist. I found it fascinating. I've never heard of him until now.
The crayons are so nice to use.

Its gone quiet again.....I maight have to get drawing again and give it a kick-start until we get the next one off the ground.

Thanks to everyone who has played so far!

Brian, I just had this "mini-me" thing in my mind when I saw Huey & Woodstock laugh.gif

Wosniac, that is a great pic, and thanks for letting us know his alias down there in Brazil!

Kat, that is a nice Casper.........you did so well with his shape ...........it is really hard to get his head right isn't it? You can't even hide a mis-shape under some hair laugh.gif
