I'm not a dog person -- never had one, never wanted one. As a result, I think I'm dog-aphasic. I can tell when I've drawn a decent likeness of a person, but a dog? Well, I must confess they all look alike to me.

So here we have a drawing, and a photo of a dog. What do you think? Is this a drawing of some random dog of this breed, or is it a drawing of this dog?

biggrin.gif It is very much the same dog. The only thing I see that might make your sketch more like the photo is to darken your highlights a little more. Cute dog! biggrin.gif

Ernest - dogs are not my specialty either! - the last one I had was in my teens! biggrin.gif

However, there are a few things I notice. I thing in the reference the dog's eyes are more pointed at the outside corners. Also, I would darken the fur round the head to give it more definition. Same for the fur between the eyes which would give the muzzle more depth. Maybe you could also make the shading of the nostrils a little more gradated. If I were to nitpick I would say try to make the fur at the top of the head a little more whispy.

With just a few tweaks this should be very good!

Hi Ernest.

We have three dogs, I love dogs and I always in my life lived together with dogs or one dog and can NOT draw dogs.
So you don't have to be a dog-person to make a good drawing of a dog.
As you have demonstrated!
This drawing is definitely the dog on the photo. Very well done.

Thanks as always for the spot-on advice, Bob and Rose. I've made some tweaks and here is Gizmo again:

What a cute hairy little beastie! smile.gif Yes, high contrast is the only way to model fur in black dogs - or white dogs for that matter. And you've done it well.

Very nice drawing. I like the light around the nose. It helps draw the eye to the center of the face. smile.gif

Thanks everyone!

biggrin.gif Ernest, I have a Gizmo too. I don't like dogs at all but I begged my husband for one. At the time I really wanted a dog after looking at a picture of when I was a little girl and seeing our old dog (which was a german sheppard) Sanny. Dogs are alot of work, kind of like children and I just don't have the patience for it (the dog I mean). He isn't a bad dog really, just lazy. But, he is part of the family now. You have done a wonderful job on the drawing. As for Gizmo (my Gizmo) I guess just after loving my dog when I was a little girl soooo much that I found I could never replace her with another one and find that I am drawn to cats alot more..laugh.gif but the kids love the dog and I guess that is what matters.
