why does no one post on the forums when there are so many people in here .. are they all shy tongue.gif
Eric
Maybe some people don't have the gift of gab, like you and I. Or, maybe they can draw, but can't type!

I think many people come here just for the gallery. If you look, there are lots of albums by people who have never posted.

Then there are those who don't post until they have something meaningful to say.

Yeah, it takes a while to get the ball rolling on new forums. We may have to direct attention to them using a contest or something...

It'll happen sooner or later though, things are picking up fast. We had over 500 people sign up yesterday... 500! Some of them have to trickle their way in here eventually smile.gif

It's pretty constant across the internet that only about 10-25% of people who join a forum or e-group ever post. I'm one of those who doesn't post if someone else has already said what I would have. I don't see the sense in a bunch of "me, too" posts.

I don't think things are starting slowly. This new board seems more active than the old one was.

A contest is a good idea. On the old site, every so often Brenda would give away a signed copy of Drawing for Dummies. Another idea would be a gift certificate for art supplies or something.

There are always many more lurkers than posters on forums. And then there are those who sign up and never log in again. It's sad, they're missing out on what seems to be a lovely community

You guys are so much fun! laugh.gif

Another thought is that many of our visitors don't read or write in English. Thankfully, drawing is a visual art, so they enjoy the gallery and the illustration aspects of the lessons.

Good point Brenda. I hadn't thought about that part of things. I do remember a member from Isreal trying to get some conversation going a while back, but she hasn't returned.

Plus, there are many other drawing sites out there with forums just like this and when you are a member of a lot of them, things can get rather busy in your life. I think they may be active on other sites in the forum aspect and using this site as a collector site for additional information and training lessons. Sort of like honey bees that always return to the nest after gathering honey and pollen throughout the countryside.

I have some ideas that I might try in the near future that may spark a little more involvement in the forum and also create some help in drawing improvement.

Have a great evening, I was in Strasbourg, France today eating real Crepes for dinner. Delicious! tongue.gif

couldnt an online translator added to the site be helpful for matters like this then they will be able to not only read what has been written but they could respond as well smile.gif

Hi guys....lol you got this thread going. I felt much the same way Woo when I first discovered the site almost a year ago now. I really don't understand why this forum is relatively slow (back then it was VERY slow). There is a wealth of information here.....the lessons honestly the best on the net, just not much sharing and dialog between members. Just so you know (though you likely already do) there are forums on the interent that are huge, some moving so fast many threads are lost off the front page in hours. So in ways....slower is better.

As a side note...the member from Isreal (Sarit/Gurl) is an active member of one of these.

I think that some people feel a little foolish adding their own comments to a forum, kinda like butting in on someone elses conversation. I have been on many sites when everyone knows everyone else and it can be a little intimidating, thankfully this is not one of them.
I like this site, the members are friendly and helpfull, and i like slow, slow is good, it gives me a chance to digest the topics without worrying if i can keep up.

Have a good day!
Incidently i have been to Worcester today and had crap for lunch, urgh!!! some things have no right to be called food. laugh.gif laugh.gif

I can understand about the intimidating bit.. as i feel if i dont know much about whats going on in a forum then i tend to hold back until some one talks about a subject i am familiar with .. but generally im a bit of a chatterbox as most can see in here so i can often gas on about anything and it just trails off onto something completely not on topic .. by the way if i do do that then please some one remind me laugh.gif
Eric
Well RJS, I take it you're not butting in here, but I must say you hit the nail on the head with your statement. Some of the other forums get so fast paced that you feel intimidated to step in and say something. I especially have a fear that what I say may have already been discussed way back on page 3 of the 68 page thread and then everyone would flame me for bringing up old news. Anyway, some of those threads get so big, you need to practically read a novel just to keep up with the topic. Its like chatting --- with homework --- Yuck!

For me, I'm glad I've made my homebase right here. We're a good bunch of characters that have banded together, if only Woo would keep herself on topic and not go off topic only to keep explaining why she isn't on topic. Man, I hate that! smile.gif Plus, where else can you get a professional like Brenda to pop in every now and then when she isn't busy making publishing deals and such. It's really an added bonus if you ask me.

Well, who's asking me anyway?

Tschuss! cool.gif

Woo,
Don't appologise for being you, it's good to go off topic sometimes it can bring something new to a subject. It's a little like a verbal conversation, none of us ever stick to the subject, we all wander off occasionally.

Eric,
Good point about Brenda, though it has to be said that many other members have given good advice and help also. All in all,

Love the site,
Love the forums,
Love the members,
Love art....when it goes well!

PS Start every day off with a smile and get it over with.

Geesh Woo! Whoodathunk that a simple question would bring on all these wonderful posts!!! cool.gif

We have a vast collection of expertise within our membership, including several art educators (from elementary school to university levels), very accomplished artists, and knowledgeable experts on just about anything pertaining to anything. When I have a question, this is where I come!

And “horsefeathers” to “staying on topic’; some of the most fun to be had on a forum is when someone has an on-the-edge-of-a-topic comment.

So, now that I’ve set the stage to go off topic myself (grin) Eric – Are you a food tester for international restaurants? I’m planning a trip to Europe in the spring; maybe you know all the best places to eat!!!

Brenda (hmmm…well artists like to draw still life - fruit can be considered still life – fruit is a food – so I’m really on topic aren’t I?)
RJS
What are "Horsefeathers"?
does that mean the same as To hell with?
RJS
domestika
I'll just shuffle a few of those horsefeathers aside, shall I? wink.gif
Just long enough to say... I'm likely to be mostly a lurker, but thought I'd start off right by at least saying Hello to all - and thanks to BH for a fabulous website!

Horse feathers laugh.gif that did tickle me .. pardon the pun

I supose being a member of a few forums in my time whislt being on the wonderweb.. they mostly are very quick and you do lose the plot of how the topic first started but its often a good thing as it keeps the forum busy and then you get more people joining in..and it does lead to other topics of conversation wether related to the forum at hand or totally on something else that maynot be related to anything at all .. but it does strike up conversation with people who may say something which you feel you have to pm them on then it starts a whole new friendship where you may actually learn something from them that you may not off by just reading the odd post every now and again.. I sometimes feel that these forums are a god send to an insominac like myself because they stop me from just lying in bed wide awake looking at the ceiling i supose i could always draw something but then i would never sleep laugh.gif plus as this is mainly an American site i just might catch a few people in the wide awake world if you get my drift

talking of fruit i could do with a banana right now laugh.gif

Let's see - what was the topic again? lol I don't post a lot because I have a wacky schedule &, to tell the truth, if I have time to post, I'd rather use it for painting! (That does not mean that I don't love each & every one of you though!)

OK, Ok the "Off-Topic" posters have it. Just like the non-smokers in the restaurants, and the people with the little sit and pee signs on their home toilets. Man, what is this world coming to?

Well, I guess in all relationships you have to be ready to give and take a little. Why should this one be any different?

Enjoying every minute of time spent with ya'll. (And no, I'm not Southern, just thought it fit here.)

And Brenda, yes I do know my way around European Flaire. I've spent a major portion of my life studying it.
