That they think of the work of Norman Rockwell, to my it seems to me an incredible artist I am a great admirer of its work
BRB
I've always admired Norman Rockwell. To me he had both skill as an illustrator and the creative imagination that will not be matched, only imitated. He knew how to "catch" a moment and tell a wonderful story in one frozen frame. biggrin.gif

I love norman Rockwell - he was the first US-Artist whom I got to know as a child - means of course his work.
I love totally his self-portrait - it is "the only way to portrait oneself"...

Another admirer here.....I was looking at one of his Drawings last summer and started to try to sketch it...I admire his style and talent very much.....not easy to mimic.

Hey Brian, your drawing is nice! I know the picture and you've caught the atmosphere of it very well!
I too would love to copy some of his pictures - but they are so full of details.. I think it is too early for me to try.

When i was young he was real popular ..my mom had his work everywhere I know he inspired me to draw.

Thanks Martina very nice of you to say. smile.gif I am still fairly new to drawing I have been at it now under three years so I think I have a long way to go yet... Honestly I admire your drawings very much, I think you have the ability to draw anything.

According to a book about Rockwell that I read many years ago...The Saturday Evening Post still has a walk in policy because of Norman Rockwell. He walked in off the street carrying his port pholio and they hired him on the spot. I love his work!!!

I'm wondering if an artist was ever procecuted for doing a sketch or a painting from someone's photograph with out their written permission.

In my opinion sketching another work of art, photo, painting, or drawing would be the same as taking a picture of a statue, a building, or any other work of art. When you change mediums you create a distinct work of art which should be yours. I just wonder if there has ever been a court case involving someone sketching a photo somone else has taken.

Hi Bob,

I have always found this site interesting...an example of taking others works, changing the mediums, and getting slapped for it...

illegal-art.org/print/index.html

I have taken out the www. to keep it from changing to a link on this forum...

Cheers.

Thanks Paul, I glanced at the site, it is very interesting. But I didn't see where anyone was prosecuted. I will read more later.

Heres one example...

"Taken from the exhibition Blond with Dark Roots, this 16-part series uses the format of 1950s and '60s romance novels to present the experiences of a young Ukrainian immigrant. To create these images, Husar bought romance novels at thrift stores, removed their covers, left the title of each book intact, changed the publisher's logo to "A Husar Romance," and painted over the rest of each cover with her own image.
In May 2002, Husar received a letter from Harlequin Enterprises Ltd. accusing her of violating the moral rights of its authors, artists, and editors. The company is demanding that Husar either alter the existing paintings or stop including them in exhibitions.

Husar has hired a lawyer and plans to fight the publisher's "absurd" accusations. We will post updates as the battle progresses."

While there may have been no formal hand slapping...it just goes to show that a change in medium doesnt necessarily appease the originator...

Cheers.
