Thank you for the third lesson Miss Joanie - now there's a bit of muscle to chew through! biggrin.gif

I'm not quite sure what you meant by the first exercise... did you want the main muscle groups showing or did you want us to draw the skin over them. I'm attaching what I did this morning after studying the lesson. If this is not what was required then please just let me know.

I am unsure on that one a little and had the same question.
painter48
First of all, let me apologize for not being very clear on my directions..............I'm sorry.

I am wanting a figure drawing (you may use your erasers now) that shows some definition. I don't need you to draw all the muscles of the body. Look at Blade's drawing - something similar to that. Just enough that you can show that the figure you are drawing has some muscles and not just a flat body. Make it look more realistic. I do not need you to show the trapezoids and/or ovals or stick figure underneath. But more 3 dimensional. Again, faces and hands and feet not important for details.

Again, I apologize rolleyes.gif

Thank you for the clarification! There is no need to apologize...I sometimes have to ask because english is not my first language. Thank you again!
Cyn
Well, I find it much easier to draw the outside of a body as compared to the under structure. But of course once I learn the under structure, I am sure they will be much more accurate. laugh.gif

QUOTE(racedolls @ May 18 2007, 05:18 AM)

here are my two lessons for the week. i am not sure about the manikan. i drew lots of them in different poses but think this one turned out the best. for some reason i am not making the legs long enough or the chest to wide maybe. everyone is doing great though
Lori

Lori - these are both very good - especially the girl at the phone booth. the manikin has shoulders that are rather large though. You might want to rethink that one. LOL

QUOTE(Venus @ May 18 2007, 08:01 AM)

blush.gif Ok Mrs. Joanie, sorry this picture isn't as good as I can do. I admit it looks horrible. I think I may have to go to the doctor and have my right hand looked at at or just give it a break for a few days. I have been writting non stop for a few days and my wrist is killing me, but I wanted to redo this last exercise before the weekend. I think I have a touch of carpal tunnel in the right hand and after excessive writting and drawing it gets really painful. At least I have to work over the weekend and it gives it a little break for a few days. That and I am going to buy a wrist and hand support bandage today as well that will work so I can do what I love doing...LOL.

Venus - this picture is just fine. Hope that hand gets better soon.

QUOTE(Farfallina @ May 18 2007, 09:16 AM)

Good morning Miss Joanie - hello class! smile.gif

I have my second exercise for this week but I don't think I'm very happy with it.

I have a problem with sideways views because I can never determine the depth - to say nothing of perspective! Is there any objective measurement of the depth of a person or did I miss something. I'm not talking about the width from shoulder to shoulder or the width of the pelvis. I'm talking about front to back.... of course in relation to the skeleton because I can assure you my depth is much bigger that yours!! laugh.gif laugh.gif

If I did miss something just tell me to go read the lessons again!

Rose - I'm really not sure about this drawing - looks like the head is way too small for the body. Its really not in proportion.

QUOTE(yoona @ May 18 2007, 09:02 PM)

Hi All - can't believe it's end of the week already. Here are my trials for this week. The Ex2 was so tough. Can't quiet get the angles/tilt of her hip and shoulder... among other things unsure.gif

**Revised: Redrew the Ex2

Yoona - these are both very good. Keep up the good work.

QUOTE(Brian David @ May 19 2007, 08:09 AM)

Hi All.

here is my lesson 2.....Cyn can I borrow your giant eraser Joanie gave you...lol... smile.gif this sure is a challenge for me.

Brian - the manikin is good - but alas, the poor girl is out of proportion. Her legs are too skinny and her bum sticks out too much as well as her stomach. The arms are not very symetrical. Try her again and I'm sure you will do better. I like the little muscle man. LOL

QUOTE(PeeWee @ May 19 2007, 11:48 AM)

[attachmentid=5330] Hope I'm not to late. These were a problum to me and they still suck.

PeeWee - they don't suck! they look pretty good if you ask me. you seem to have the proportions correct.

QUOTE(Rafaelmarron @ May 19 2007, 01:23 PM)

Hi

Here are my exercises of lesson 2.

Rafael

Rafael - good job on both of them!

Lesson 2 Practical Exorcise 1 and 2

Blade - Good job on both pictures - I believe you got the hang of it.

Thank you once again for all your patience (and kindly excuse the rough lines and shading in this one.. I couldn't find my drawing glasses this morning! blink.gif )

[attachmentid=5358]

Edited to add another exercise in case this is what you are after. This is from imagination, constructed using the 8 head and triangles method and adding some shading following the above drawings and keeping the light source in mind.

[attachmentid=5359]

Rose - I like all three drawings here - again for some reason those shoulders look so big - is it the head that is too small because I can see your underdrawings to get your measurements correct.

The 3rd drawing is really what I was looking for. I'm sorry I didn't explain very well in my directions. Good job. These look a lot better than previous drawings - so I'm seeing improvement.

QUOTE(gmags @ May 20 2007, 01:51 PM)

Gmags - very good on both drawings!!!

QUOTE(Chloe_1 @ May 20 2007, 03:28 PM)

Thanks Joanie for lesson 2, and thanks for sending me lesson 3. wub.gif
I redid Exercise one..and am posting it with lesson 2.
The head is a wee bit tiny for the rest of the body proportions. I just realized it when I am seeing it here. He does look kinda of athletic though tongue.gif
I got carried away and wrote some of the bones name beside the figure. tongue.gif

Chloe - Good job on the girl at the phone booth. The manikin could use some work - his left arm seems to be way out of proportion to his body.

QUOTE(Jack W. @ May 20 2007, 06:52 PM)

Again I'll get my exercises in right under the wire. smile.gif

[attachmentid=5367][attachmentid=5369]

I confess I did a lot of erasing, though I left the underdrawings wherever I could.

Jack W - no problem with the erasing - I wasn't really looking for the underdrawings. Both your drawings are spot on!!!

Lesson 3 PE 2a

Ok, this is a toughy. The young lady seated is not only completely clothed, but most of the features I felt like needed shading were obscured by other parts of her body. As I started trying to envision the anatomy underneath, I found that perspective went to the wayside and I kept trying to place her in a "head on" position instead of from above as indicated. I especially had a problem placing the folded back leg and muscle shading.

Blade - I see what you mean - you did pick a tough one to draw! It looks fine with the exception of that one leg. Maybe you could get an adult to pose for you in that position so you could SEE exactly how to draw it instead of from a picture. Even a child posing might work. Perhaps drawing it from another angle might put it into perspective. It is an awkward position to put that leg in!! LOL

Perspective is coming up pretty soon in the lessons.

I better post this now before I get a chance to mess it up completely...let's just say that my eraser got a good workout rolleyes.gif I know her right shoulder isn't correct ( or is it? ). Because of the angle she was standing at and of the clothing, it was hard for me to get it right. But, it wasn't for lack of trying.

[attachmentid=5398]
Venus
laugh.gif LOL John great drawings..I had forgotten I had given Joanie the pictures of my husband when before we started the class and was looking at your male drawing and just burst out laughing saying hey thats my husband with a fig leaf!! Great job and good laugh for me.

tongue.gif Joanie as you can tell I haven't even read the lesson 3 yet but I will start on it tonight!! Was a busy weekend!! Still trying to recouperate from working so hard and seeing a bunch of great concerts!! Ok so off to take son to get a hair cut and then back to the drawing board!!! wub.gif

Here's the rest of the lesson for this week. Again, had a slight problem getting the angle right on the girl seated. It was fun to do these though and a great learning experience. Thank you!

[attachmentid=5403] [attachmentid=5402]
Farfallina
Joanie, sorry I was so taken by John's fig leaf I didn't see your comment. I think I have trouble constructing the figure... or maybe I should have stuck with the two heads for the shoulder width rather that 2 and a quarter. In any case I'm much better at drawing what I see I suppose.

I shall attempt the last exercise tomorrow hopefully and I'll try to choose the more difficult pose and see how I do with that. wacko.gif
racedolls
thanks joanie-- i agree about the manakins shoulders. i just dont know about that one. i drew lots and lots and either the shoulders were to wide or the legs to short. my son has tons of body building magazines so i am looking and getting ready for lesson 3. been studying those muscles too. i wish i would have paid more attention in health class now. was not my best subject!!!!
Lori
PeeWee
Thanks joanie. The reason I said they suck was I drawed them so many times that when I layed down to sleep & closed my eyes there they were on the back of my eye lids. lol [attachmentid=5406]
Farfallina
I'm here with my final exercise for the week. I chose to do the difficult one too. I know you said not to draw in the face so I'm asking you to ignore it too. I only added in some features because they helped with some of the alignment. I must say this is getting very interesting and I'm learning a lot from it. Thank you Miss Joanie.

(In case you all think the boobies are not the same size - well the left one is slightly hidden by the arm OK! laugh.gif laugh.gif )

Thank you my friend.

No need to be hard on yourself John. Believe me it took me a while to figure out that leg. The trick is to realise that in that position almost all the heel is hidden and rather than the side of the foot what you see is the sole upturned at a three quarter angle.

I hope you realise that a naked drawing of a figure that is actually dressed is much more difficult than drawing from life. With that it mind I think we should all pat ourselves on the back for what we have achieved.

Don't you think so Miss Joanie?
painter48
Rose - you are sooooo right! I can't believe that most of you tackled the hardest picture presented!!!! Hoooorayyyy - that shows a definite willingness to try to challenge yourselves.

I am getting a tremendous feeling of satisfaction in teaching this class. You all seem to be dedicated enough and it is definitely starting to show. I know we all don't have the time for this but by sticking to it, you have shown me you want to learn.

Everyone is doing really great - I actually can see improvement in just these 3 weeks that we've been doing this - Its awesome for me - and I know you all know you are doing great - you can give yourselves a pat on the back and a big hug from me. biggrin.gif

Denise

Nice job on these, Denise - but that was the last lesson - you need to still post this week's lesson on muscles. Hurry Hurry Hurry - I'm just reminding you. LOL You have until Sunday to post them.

Good for you, Tim. You at least tried to draw that awkward leg!!! If I were drawing it, I would have quit. LOL hahahaha and picked a different picture.

I know what you mean, PeeWee - sometimes we just need to walk away from a drawing because it drives us crazy blink.gif wacko.gif

Just so everyone else knows, we are going to tackle that picture again in a later lesson..........so don't worry about it too much. tongue.gif
Venus
laugh.gif LOL Joanie, the awkward leg goes with an awkward and very out going personality!! She is great though, and if you like, I can always email her and ask her if she can do that certain pose nude...it isn't showing too much..... blush.gif Or at least in her underwear to get the muscle tone values. She is an artist herself so I am sure she would have no problem with it. We had art and graphic designing together in high school, and I have known her since middle school on top of being roommates after we graduated...LOL. So I am sure she will do it for me. rolleyes.gif its what friends are for... laugh.gif
Venus
tongue.gif Ok these are not my best drawins in the world and if I have time inbetween my study unit for my online class and these babies, then I may redo them. I drew them at like 2am last night or this morning..lol. Wasn't tired and felt like drawing, its been awhile. happy.gif

hi,
here are my exercises for lesson 3.
for the 1st ex, i was trying to draw someone on running track but it turned out like he's crawling.. sleep.gif and for the ex2, i tried to fill in the muscle tones, but was a bit of a guessing game, especially with the leg that's in the background.
thanks for these lessons Joanie. it's fun and very informative smile.gif

Hello to all my Figure Drawing Students:

I have a little bad news for all my figure drawing pupils. I won't be sending out any drawing lessons today. I will try to send one out tomorrow but I'm still not sure on that either. Nothing serious, just have been under the weather lately and now have caught a cold/flu on top of it all. I will post something on this thread if I am not able to send it out.

However, this does not mean that you don't have to draw anything this week! hahaha Please continue to draw from the pictures you were sent last week or if you have any of your own or better yet, have someone to pose for you. If you want to submit them on this thread, I will comment on them when I get a chance.

I apologize for this inconvenience and hope to be up to speed by next week.
