Thank you Kay. Pictures are a factor of stimulating participation but it is actually the number and quality of contributions that make a challenge successful.
And I for one can't complain: always my challenges attract the most talented and hard working members of this site. There were instances of dry spell but I usually enjoy the company of the best of drawspace. And I am thankful for that.

Elena, don't be so hard on yourself, the doll came out great.
i did the two red peppers last night in Colour Pencil, and i was going to post it but then realized i left something out of the drawing which is quite vital - the shadows.... so i'm going to just finish it up today and i'll post it tomorrow

I improved a bit(at least I think so) my bell peppers and finished the geranium I started months ago. Watercolor needs lots of practice and my last attempts were in January 2009.
Feel free to critique as I want to improve in this medium.

I think you're getting the hang of it. The bell peppers look great! The geraniums would look so much better if the pot was actually standing on something, like the peppers. Not sure if you can squeeze a table top in there. Also, remember that you need to stand back to view your watercolours. I always place mine upright against the wall for a while and stand back. I can see it when I walk into the room, it always looks better from a distance. To prove this, look at the thumbnails instead of clicking them. Not just yours, but anybody elses!
ElenaM
Jul 1 2009, 08:12 PM
Thanks, Steve. It's true that Thumbnails look always better. But some watercolors fascinate me when taking a close up look of the transparency of layers. Not something that I did here. But i will practice more.Promise.

Alex, it's great you love graphite work. To me is still difficult. You can do almost any of these pics in graphite and keep in mind you need three values, dark, medium and light. And that's all.The grayscale version of each photo tell you exactly where your values are. Please start considering yourself a member and join this challenge.

Hi all,
Here is my sorry contribution to this week's challenge.
For the doll, I tried on purpose to draw it in a Picasso's arlequin style. If you pay attention very very carefully, you will hear the short bald man lauging his teeth out in his tomb.
For the mandolin ... well ... I will understand your silence.
Alexander Markham
Jul 2 2009, 12:47 AM
Its difficult to me. Very much so. Look at my Serene Scene picture and you'll see. However, I'm trying, and really that's all that matters. I love the look of Brenda's hatching. I'm trying those free lessons. Most of the pictures there look so nice, and the guides are eternally helpful. I do tend to get confused as to which shade I'm currently on (in values) so I'll probably need to work on gradation as well. I haven't had an art class (they cut them from my middle school and I wasn't lucky enough to get it freshman year) but next year, I should have it if my schedule doesn't get all screwy again. I'm so glad you also made a greyscale picture. Its very thoughtful. I am working with HB, 2b, 4b, and 6b General's graphite pencils, so I pretty much use improvisation when Brenda talks about 2h and the sort. Thanks for the welcome and the good value tips. Lets see how much I improve.

Claudio - I really liked the mandolin, actually. The doll was good, and I liked the angles as well on it.
ElenaM
Jul 2 2009, 12:52 AM
Claudio, both drawings have their merit. The doll is definitely arlecchino and your interpretation shows the creative side of this challenge which can inspire original approaches.
The mandolin has some good points yet looks kind of chubby, maybe it's a mandola

Its cousin. Just kiddin'.
No reasons to weep, we appreciate your contribution and thank you for your time.

The eyes and the bumpy-nostril part (is there a name for that? xD) really caught my attention, Elena. That's a really good sketch for such a short time. I'll try to enter something as my next sketch. You have a very nice signature as well!

You are too kind, Alex.I am a very exigent person, tough on myself and on others I guess when it comes to work.I believe that the more we push ourselves the more we learn, and praise and being pleased with what we do is not going to motivate us to try doing better next time.
But practice is the key to success.
Thanks for the comment on my signature.
Please feel free to post any attempt in any stage of its development. We learn here especially in the challenges.

Tania, the work of a beginner shows great promise. Your coloring job is very good. If you read Jeanette's topics on CP you will learn a lot and most of all about the gentle touch of Cp on paper, the sharpness at all times of tips, the several layers that you can put in a drawing. These will come natural to you the more you work.
Now fot the shadows on the red you can add purple and blend over red. For highlighs you can use white. Also hues of orange and yellow can add more texture and vibrancy to the pepper.
So this can be considered finished by now. But what I suggest is to print this drawing and add more layers to it and if you are satisfied with the result you can go back to your original drawing and enrich it.
Again for a beginner's work this is excellent as it is known that Cp is a very difficult medium.
