-- Photos of people making interesting facial expressions (tongues sticking out, laughing hard, etc.)
-- Animals besides dogs and cats
-- Funny rules (color, but can't use green; must use a medium you've never used before)
-- Speed challenge

Hmmm, I like the animal challenge. There are so many of us here that still struggle with the small stuff like doing hair. Or maybe some colored pencil only challenges where we can discuss different techniques. Speed challenge sounds fun too. Or maybe mixed media?

* Animal challenge. that would be great.
* A challenge where people must use exact media and draw exact fing. For example one week our object would be a book, another it would be a tree. [it doesn't matter is it from your imagination, from a reference foto [whitch is found by yourself] or just a sketch while eating lunch...]. One week everyone draws with coloured pencils, another week with acrylics and so on. Of course, sometimes it could be mixed media such as tea with ink, watercolour with coloured pencils and so on.
* Venus, I really like "Only coloured pencil challenge"
* Oh, and "Funny rules" is a very great idea too.

id like to see more challenges on different kinda of animals or.....something that is unique like hand animals.....i have a few pics to demonstrate.....its challenging but its unique and i have done one it is fun....that and more buildings and birds and things like fish and trees or water that kind of stuff....or objects from around your house....another thing i thought would be cool is if we drew the picture of the person hosting the challenge.....if everyone hosts it they will all have their own picture drawn by as many people as participate....also another thought i had was to start judging the pictures like a competiotion....who drew the best pic....to motivate others to draw and of course its all in fun but people work good if being judged and under pressure.
or another thought was to have something like celebrity week.....where we draw nothing but celebrities that are hot in the news during that week....or just ones that are your favorites.....or favorite cars or heres another i just thought of....have everyone create a logo for this website....and the best one gets to have it posted on the main site...for drawspace....if i think of more i will let u know

Laurie, I think your ideas are great. I like the last one especially.
But the contests idea would be difficult to arrange.
I've lived most of my life in rural areas and there were few good artists. I've entered a few county fairs and art contests. I've even been asked to judge a few art contests. I know the difficulty involved when you class everyone together.
The problem is some very talented younger artists and even beginning older artists do exceptional work but unless the judges take everything into consideration it just isn't fair to everyone.
In almost every fair or contest I've entered I won first prize. But I didn't really enjoy winning. In fact, I almost always felt I shouldn't have entered.
I think a contest would work if there was some way of classifying people so that it would be fair to everyone.
I think that here on drawspace there are several portrait artists that are more talented and more creative than I am. So I would have some real competition here.
If we have a contest here, I think we would need to have some way of knowing just how the work is done, the time it took, the material used and the subject would need to be the same subject for every one in the specific contest. And there should be some way of classifying the contestants.
These are just my opinions. I'd like to hear other opinions. Contests can be fun and competition is good. But some people can come away disapointed and discouraged.

ok then we classify the people according to class A B or C D etc.....you go according to how many years been drawing and how much experience they have....and judge according to class....say the winner can host a draw challenenge or snoopy challenge whatever they choose....for that week coming up....there has to be something that can be done to interest people more....keep them coming back....and keep them wanting to draw....and bring in new people to this website... or how about something like who can draw the most pictures in one week....from sunday to sunday. or have a draw challenge on sunday and have an additional draw challenge on wednesday have two different hosts,...i understand there is a snoopy challenege and the weekly draw challenge. have the wednesday one totally off the wall...something like Wildlife Wednesday,, or Toad tuesay or moccasin monday and flippy friday and so on... these are of course ideas....i dont think im getting my point across too well here.....these are what i was thinking...and maybe judge according to the day....whoever wins comes up with the challenge of the day....that way there is variety and nobody feels left out....at some point everyone will be able to host their own dayof whatever they choose....i suppose you could give it a try and see how it goes....please give suggestions on this
I firmly believe that with creative minds like we have here on Drawspace that anything is possible.

Nice idea, Kim, to make some more challenges with a theme.

Sorry Laurie - bad idea to make a contest and to classify people. I think we have more than enough cometetivness in our daily lives. this could frustrate members - or would you be happy to be categorized - maybe in the lowest level? Or in a higher level and always reach last rank?

maybe i will leave this site for good. didnt realize there was rude people here.

Wow - I am totally astonished you (and elizabeth) think this was rude. And to say "You'll never say anything again" is a bit childish.
Keep your opinion if you think it is a good idea. This is life - not everytime all people agree.
But tell me - how have I embarrassed you?????????

I am sorry if you are feeling bad now but I only have written down my opinion. Or would you like it more if I would have lied and said "nice idea"???
Or is it because I have asked how you would feel classified in a lower level??? This was an example - many members here are beginners. Please don't misunderstand me.
I don't know how Bob could help you - he too can not change my opinion.

Laurie I'm sorry you felt offended but I think you misunderstood what Martina said. What she meant to say was that in an online contest it's not always possible to say whether everyone is playing fair. Competitions by their very nature can be very tricky and could also be very discouraging.
Please don't be offended. Martina is German and English is not her native language - sometimes she doesn't come across the way she wishes to.

thanks bob, and rose and everyone....i was simply giving my opinon and i dont agree with martina either....maybe an online challenge isnt a good idea....but she could have said it wouldnt work or whatever didnt have to say it is a bad idea.....i dont understand how it wouldnt work....people dont come here like they used to even when i started a couple months back there were always people on here now there is hardly anyone....i was giving my idea to maybe draw people in....other sites have done it and succeeded....why couldnt we....i understand it wouldnt work....so i will not say anymore about it....
bob: thanks for the thristy thursday pic....i love pepsi too....would a thing challenge work if posted daily.....it wouldnt have to be a challenge either just something to make people think of things to draw on that day....i have a ton of ideas....kinda scared to share them now....
martina: regardless of how you meant to say it it did come across as rude....instead of saying it nicely you had to say it like it is bad and i shouldnt have thought it....i was offended by it....for your information i am 26 and have had a bad bad few months....my 2 year old boy just had open heart surgery and i was thinking of things to relax me....im going to stay here and tough it out not cause you said or anyone said but cause my passion for drawing goes further than letting someone ruin it for me....if you dont like this idea or any idea there is people that might....look at bob...he gave thristy thursday a shot....all i was hoping to do is to bring people into drawspace and have them enjoy it as much as i did....im a very emotional person....ive had a rough life....and all i wanted was to make it fun for people to be here....it is fun but something to keep them coming back cause everyday is something different....if you dont agree dont participate in it....
if anyone wants to hear more of my ideas then well Pm me and i will be happy to share....
thanks again bob for the pic....i took the thread down cause i was mad....but i will repost it if you like....although thursday is almost over....i have an idea for tomorrow though...if i can post it...

Hi Laurie
It's a pity that you had a rough life or bad last time but maybe this is the reason you did not understand me correct.
Be sure I don't wanted to be rude.
Laurie, say what you think and do what you like to do and if someone has another opinion - don't take it personel. Sometimes he/she is right, sometimes he/she is wrong.
What I said wasn't meant personal, it only was about the thing.
That's it. Have a good day.

Ernest I really like your ideas ...I began reading then everything went in the wrong direction .
I will ask this and I will try to say it as nice as possible ...when you feel you have been offended please take it to PM..airing it out in a thread is not the proper way to handle it ...you get input from those who had nothing to do with it ..this causing more of a problem .
My goal here is to find something that everyone can do .. I do not want to only focus on one group of artist .
I do like some of the ideas listed and I will note those and try and find people who would like to run the challenge .
Funny faces
Animals ( No dogs and cats )
Funny rules
speed challenge
Colored pencils only
Siksnosparnyte..I like your idea as well .. drawing one object .
Laurie I like yours as well .. but maybe we can change it a bit by not making it a contest but creating a drawspace logo sounds like a fine challenge
those are the list of ideas .. now I need people to either volunteer to start the thread or PM me your idea and I will start the thread and give you credit for the idea.
I will give you the chance to be the Host of a challenge and I know it can seem scarey but it really is fun being in charge of your own challenge
any Volunteers ?

Laurie...I like your idea of the daily challenge with a theme. Though a volunteer for the next day sounds like a better idea rather than a contest. Or it could even be ran to whoever starts the challenge uses the same thread and just puts a new idea in for the next day. You could even start it out, and have people volunteer if they would like it to continue for the next week.
Siks...I really, really, love your ideas!! Sounds perfect for anyone with ideas of going into graphic designing or illustration. Please do start a challenge thread cause I am all for it.

just remember to give a list of the do's so people are clear on that ..I cant wait to see how these go .. Thank you everyone for pulling together .
I will be looking for the new challenges .. if you need any help doing a thread please pm myself or venus we will be able to help get started

your challenge can go for as long as you wish or for just a day .. but remeber some people can not be here every day so they maybe wanting to join your challenge will not be able to because they can not get on say on saterday . I look at your challenge and you had alot of people joining in .. maybe you can think of a way to make it somewhat longer to give others a chance .

Unfortunately, ::laughs::, I'm not a realism artist. I don't draw things from what I see around me, unless I'm taking a particular item and putting it in my own terms, such as a person, animal, what have you. I've looked through a couple of the challenges, and I'm like, oh... that's cool... ;__;.
I think abstract concepts should also be put in. Like for instance, love or daydreaming. One can easily think of something from that sort of abstract tone and draw from it.
However, that would cause serious problems for those artists that need to see something to draw it. So perhaps in the challenges, there should also be something abstract, just in case someone's feeling "frilly" for the day, and so that those of us who don't use realism as our subject can also have fun too.
^^

May 21 2007, 02:34 AM
Dragon I agree ... I myself can not .. well have not tried to do that kind of art .. but there is a place in the art world for it as lots of people pay top dollar for abstract
DragonicFlames
May 21 2007, 11:04 AM
Or fantasy art. ^__^ It's kind of funny how you can "label" something like a Character as "abstract" art, meaning that you don't reference any other object you see and then you draw.
(I knew I made that post sound like I was an abstract artist like the awesome stuff that I see people or animals in and it's not really so.)

Hey, how about some kind of negative drawing exercise? I couldn't start it because I totally stink at it

I just need the practice and instruction!! I drew my children on the beach digging for sandfiddlers, but the background looks silly because I can't draw the ocean, my most favorite thing if I could draw it!! Anyone up for that? I hope so, Elizabeth

My area of expertise is "remote viewing" ... a trained skill essentially synonomous with ESP. (It's generally understood that artists make better "viewers" than non-artists.)
So, to REALLY level the playing field amongst everyone ... (if not changing the game completely) ... let's all attempt to
sketch a target that will be selected by someone BEFORE the work is begun but, revealed AFTER all the work is completed.
I say "sketch" because that's about the best that can be expected. To utilize ESP to "draw" a target requires skills/time almost certainly beyond everyone here. If there is any interest I'll outline a brief suggestion on how people might proceed to tackle this but some will certainly wish to proceed on their own intuition.
Might be fun, will certainly take much less time than a detailed drawing.

Hi all,
I read this thread with great interest and wasn't surprised at the outcome, ie when someone became upset at an unintentially critical comment, the group reassured the person who was upset. This is group dynamics at it's best and most supportive, common amongst people who have to struggle to survive, like all creative people. I'm happy to be part of this group if this is an example. : )
