I recently got interested in handedness after reading a little from the book Right-Hand, Left-Hand by Chris McManus. Turns out there are all sorts of things I didn't know about the subject. Did you know that 90-93% of the adult population is right handed? Or that 3 out of the last 4 presidents of the United States are left handed? And that less than 1% of people aged over 80 years are left handed?

I'm left handed but I'm right handed when it comes to some sports though. But writting, drawing is all done with my left hand.

It's the excact same with me. Left handed in writing and drawing and right handed (and footed) when it comes to throwing and playing football. I have way more power in my left foot

Yes!

It's easier for a left handed person to learn a string instrument because the hardest part is the fingerplay/chords which is done by the left hand. I have played the violin (same thing really) since I was 7. I play some guitar and bass as well. I think you should encourage your son to take lessons if he is interested smile.gif If anything, his left-handedness will be an advantage.

I'm right handed. But I have seen some left handed people playing the guitar. Usually they hold it upside down (of course, they have to change the positions of the strings). But really it doesn't make a difference. When playing the guitar a person has to train both hands. It's just common way of playing and other ways are no worse smile.gif And sometimes even better as Nap has already said.

more ppl are left handed than most of us realize, lots of us that are right handed, such as myself, have been MADE TO USE THE RIGHT HAND..I was left handed as a child, but my teachers would whack me and force me to use the right..

Hence the fact that practically nobody over 80 is left handed, though I didn't know they kept doing that for so long. I mean you're only 43 right? Luckily they don't do that anymore, though I was always told off by my teachers because I smudged all over the paper. Ballpoints are ok, but anything else is torture to write with.

I have been doing calligraphy for the past few years. In the beginning I was at the point of giving it up when I suddenly got the idea of doing it upside down. Since our letters go from left to right, flipping the paper upside down allows me to write it from right to left and drag the pencil along instead of pushing it. I'm basically mimicking a right hand. It improved me a lot (though it cost me a bit of my left-handed soul)

..i am only 43 yes..but i am also from louisiana, they were still whipping kids in school when i went..with paddles too...
ya know davinci was also left handed, and used a mirror to write with cause it was easier to pull the quill than push it. wink.gif

My father was left handed and he too was rapped across the knuckles when caught using his left hand. I think we are all capable of using both hands. Quite recently, I developed R.S.I (repetetive strain injury) in my right hand. Mainly through using the mouse, so I switched sides and started using the left hand. At first it was so bad, I almost gave up. But gradually, I have become even more profficient with the left hand, than I was with the right! And when I have used the right hand, it feels strange! Somebody mentioned drawing with the opposing hand, I think that's a great idea! And I'm gonna try it later.

My uncle was left handed too but they forced him to be right handed.

And if I did play the guitar i'd be able to learn because you just get used to things after a while I guess. Because there's no way i'd be able to learn how to play a left handed guitar because i'm so used to seeing right handed ones. And just like at my work with popcorn scoops they're all made for right hands but then after a few months of working there they now had some left handed ones too and it was just too akward for me to use them. I got too used to the right one but i'd still be able to use the left one if I really need to.

I'm right handed generally, but left handed for some sports (like golf, hockey, baseball). I'm into trying to teach some left-handedness to my brain too. Here's an exercise I like : I try to write with my left hand in miror. Talk about brain twister. wacko.gif
