Some creatures, like the dragon or the tap, have their origin in traditional mythology and was thought to be real. Others were based on real creatures, originating in the confusing stories of travelers, as the Lamb of TARTARI plant, which was supposed to be a lamb that grew attached to the land, being in fact a type of fern. The traditional unicorn may result in the misrepresentation of stories about rhinos and / or narwhal. Examples are legendary creatures in medieval bestiaries.

Other creatures, however, lost importance over the stories, but thanks to current books have been rediscovered and found that they are real, as the giant squid (Kraken). In Africa, the natives of the Congo European visitors to speak of an animal that looked like a cross between a zebra and a giraffe. While tourists assume that the stories were simple folk legends, in 1901, returned with Sir Harry Johnston skins proving the existence of the creature, which is currently known by okapi.

Some mythical creatures are hybrids, a combination of two or more animals. For example, a centaur is a combination of a man and a horse, the Minotaur, a man and a bull and the mermaids, half woman and half fish. There was not always the intention to understand as literal juxtapositions of parts from different species. Due to the lack of a vocabulary morphological, medieval scholars and travelers would attempt to describe unusual animals by comparing point by point with another family: a giraffe, for example, was called camelopard, she was half and half camel leopard. At the leopard was baptized with that name because she was half lion (Latin: "leo") and half-panther (Latin: "pardus"). This etymology has remained to this day, despite its zoological inaccuracies.

Many legendary creatures appear mainly in the fantasy genre. They are often assigned powers, knowledge or protection of something of great value, making it of vital importance in the argument of history. Dragons, for example, are usually described posados on a shimmering golden treasure that becomes the target of adventures.

Other creatures are believed to exist even today, among them are the Chupacabras, Bigfoot, Yeti, the Loch Ness monster, the Jersey Devil, Mothman, yowie, Yeren, Pukwudgie and even space aliens. They were covered under the name of the crypt and is responsible for studying criptozoologos, and it is they who rooted through examples of legendary creatures, such as the Lamb above plant, which is trying to find inspiration in real life that these animals could have been based, if any. Some, like the aforementioned giraffe and, more recently, the giant squid, have proven to be real.
