You are nearly there, Kay - but...
This is
so frustrating, because I'm sure that, face-to-face, Steve or I could teach you this once-and-for-all, in less than 5 mins.

It shows the limitations of trying to communicate online.

Do you have skype on your computer, by any chance?

Your eye-level, and the horizon-line, are the level at which receding lines on the walls (edges of windows, doors, etc) do not slope up or down.
Click to view attachmentThe horizon line MUST lie between these.

I suck at perspective .. Remember that sidewalk that was in front of the building where Steves wife was standing .. It's a wonder she didn't slide off of it !! You're a brave soul .. I tried ..

No. Both could be on the page or both could be off the page.

Often, but not always - the issue is that the vp's for a building with a right-angled corner will be at 90º to each other, on the horizon, while a more typical field of view framed by a painting will be 45º-60º.
One, both, or neither might be on, depending on both the angle of the building to us, and also how "widescreen" the composition is.

...sun came out for a little bit..hooray, i went outdoors and enjoyed it for a bit, and took my paper and picture out to the swing..I really hope this one is right..* sigh*..i am beginning to feel as though I will never get it..I have these sudden sparks of 'oh yeah!' then comes the paper and I cant do it.
i really think the best way for me to do this is find some pics, mark where i think the eye line should be then you guys tell me if I am right..obviously that is my problem the very basic eye line, I mean if i cant point that out correctly there is really no point in me drawing it thru
so i am going to scout around, find a few, mark where i feel the line should be, then you guys tell me why that isnt the right place ok?
i always forget the pic

Now once you have a reasonable horizon line ALL the VPs for that scene
go on that line,

You really like to step up to a challenge don't you?
This is not bad, but there are a few glaring mistakes. The main one I see is the main roof line! It's way off from the other perspective lines. All the red lines (more or less) arrive at the same point. But the roof line (green) is going way off!
Click to view attachmentI suspect that the height of the building is much more than you have it, thus causing this distortion. Have you got the photo to post up?
I still think you need to get something simple under your belt before you tackle subjects like this!

I've just put a few lines over this and they don't line up! The tower on the right hand side, the VP for the perspective lines is way above the VP on the left hand side! This may be a photo that's been 'enhanced' at some time, to make it look better, but in fact has made it askew to reality! No wonder you had trouble with it.

how about a hole, as though you were looking straight into a hole in the ground, how would that work?
dcorc
Jul 16 2009, 10:51 PM
This would be similar to looking up at a skyscraper - you'd use three-point perspective, with VP's on the horizon-line, and one vertical VP downward, well below the horizon - and typically well below the bottom of your drawing sheet, so that vertical walls don't converge too rapidly.
(If you were looking absolutely straight down then you could treat it as one-point)
