Hi Folks,
Welcome to this week's Drawing Challenge. I am your host Ernest Friedman-Hill; you can call me EFH. If you really want to butter me up, "Dr. Friedman-Hill" works good too.
What is a drawing challenge? Simple. I post some pictures, and you pick one (or more) and draw them -- then you post your pictures in this thread and we all get to look. Everyone is invited -- nay, implored -- to join in. It's a lot of fun! Try to choose a picture that's different from what you usually draw, and you can surprise yourself with your talent! The only rule is that this is a drawing challenge, so you need to use a traditional drawing medium: pencil, charcoal, pastels, etc. No digital art, no paint. If you use watercolor pencils, don't use any water until after you post. Good luck everybody and have fun!
The theme for this week is -- well, honestly, there is no theme, just pictures I like. There are five photos, and I'll post them all in both color and black and white. In order, the pictures are:
1) A hardware junk-drawer still life;
2) A bull from Homestead Farm, a "rescue farm" which cares for formerly abused animals;
3) A green tomato growing in my garden, complete with a thrip;
4) The stair rail on the front of my house;
5) My son Zachary as a baby, making the artist's life as hard as possible by showing both hands and both feet at once!

Ph.D., Chemistry, MIT, '92. As my sister delighted in saying at the time, I'm not a real doctor.
Yes, that little bug is a thrip, and if I don't do something about them they're going to chew up my tomato vines!

Jeremy,
Great job!
You should have no problem posting your picture so long as you don't use a link. (same way as posted in the gallery)
Ernest,
For something that was painful, you sure did a fine job of it!

So after a long hiatus (been under the weather for a number of weeks) I decided I needed to draw one of Ernest's tomatoes

I just clicked on it and it is quite possibly the most enormous tomato ever dawn ..

It was fun and felt good to be drawing again ...

As I was drawing I wasn't so much paying attention to the shadows until after the fact and when they came into focus I realized how cool they were

You done good Ernest

LOL
thanks Paulette

Hi Folks,
Ernest:
Great photos. I have been doing these challenges but since I do not have access to a scanner, I am unable to upload. I will try the bull and the fence, since both are outside my comfort zone. Happy drawing to all. I enjoy viewing the results of your labours.

Cynthia --
A digital photo, especially one taken in sunlight -- looks just as good (and sometimes even better) than a scan. Some of the images in my gallery are photos.

Well here it is. A few teething problems getting my image of Mr Cow onto this thread. I am learning all the time. thanks to Ernest and Venus for all their help, and to everyone else for their kind words.[attachmentid=5880]

Hi EFH
Nice challenge! And some good results so far.

I tried my hand at the bull - it was fun, because the picture didn't show up very much detail as far as light and shadow goes, so I had to get the contour right. Great fun trying to convey the feeling of a big heavy animal.

Like the bull! It's fascinating how many different aspects of this picture our artists can bring out.
