Hi everyone

I am from Singapore and I am new to drawing. I decided to pick up the pencil to draw after flipping through manga comic books when I was in the Army and I was inspired by the artwork of some of the comics. What I hope to achieve in the future is to be able to draw well and be able to construct an aesthetically pleasing web comics for my own hobby.

Being new to drawing I would like to know where should I begin? There are so many to choose from still life, figure drawing, portraiture, landscape etc. I would like to know from which of these categories is the best way build up a solid foundation in the arts?

Thank you for your time reading my thread

Hi,

Welcome to Drawspace!

In my experience, a person is best at drawing the things that interest them. If you love nature, then you're likely going to be good at landscapes, animals, flowers, or wherever your interests lie. For me, I find portraits fascinating, so that's where my own meager skills have developed.

But you have to walk before you can run. Look here to see all the drawing lessons available at this site, and start with the beginner ones to learn about art materials, vision, line, shading, and other fundamentals. There's a wealth of information here -- take advantage of it!

Of course, there are also our weekly drawing challenges . By joining in on those, you can get a chance to draw some unusual subjects and interact with other budding artists in a fun setting.

Hi Hill

What interests me is comics and illustrations but I dont think I will be able to draw nice comics if I dont start from the very basic biggrin.gif

Yes I have been to the beginner section and I am reading them and practicing drawing as I go along. I will post my art work for the "Weekly Challenges" as soon as I move to my new home. Currently I only have a digital camera and the quality isnt very good.

Thank you

biggrin.gif Hi Lycanthrope!! Welcome to Drawspace. Everyone has given some great pointers. As well as figure drawing and anatomy books, another good way to do comics is to save newspaper funnies in Sundays or Everyday papers. (I am not sure if you have daily papers??) But here in the states there are lot of them, or you can go and buy used comics and copy comics already made and use them for practice. I suggest also learning some landscaping so that the characters you create have an invironment surrounding them. Good luck and can't wait to see your work. wub.gif

My advice would be to keep it simple ..too much information will scare you out of your desire lol ....what I did when I started out years ago was got a coloring book and looked through them .. barbie was big and she kinda has some realistic looking poses so I just started drawing her over and over .. then i would change her outfits and so on ...the repeated drawing of her made it so i didnt need the coloring book anymore i could draw the best barbie it got to the point I changed so much of her putting blonde in with her redish brown hair ...stuff like that ....just remember start simple and with practice you will improve ..always save your art no matter how much you hate it .. because in a month you can compare and trust me if you have been practicing you will have improved .smile.gif

I hope this helps
