After doing some graphic design and taking their related classes I figured it was time to actually start drawing. Anyone else here get into drawing/art backwards like me?

Welcome to Drawspace, Doug. I don't understand what you mean by drawing art backwards, but it sounds fun at least. I didn't do it backwards, but I was a late starter. Now I'm hooked and trying to do at least a drawing per week.
