I'm normally a very realistic painter but I was fooling around with watercolors (NOT my favorite medium & one I haven't used in years!) and painted this giraffe. I love giraffes because they assure me that God has a great sense of humor! You can critique it all you want - I see several things I wish I'd done differently but all in all, I'm pretty happy with it simply because it's so different for me. I really like whimsy in art but never have known how to achieve it.

Thanks so much - I like it too but, as I said, I see things that I wish I'd done differently. Now if I can just remember how I did it! lol

That is a remarkable perspective. One of those views you get only while holding a large fistful of fresh grass that he can't get inside his pen. Too bad there's a frame, cause I think he doesn't notice it.

I think it looks great. It reminds me of the zoo in Abilene Texas which had a bridge over the giraffe enclosure. It put you right at eye level with the giraffes. You could even buy peanuts to feed them. It was great.

Why is it that you only use watercolours sometimes?
With a talent like that you should be using it all the times!
Though you may think that there are faults with it, who are you to judge? (you only painted it)! Ha Ha, lol
I think this is great, almost whimsical, but great, you have captured the subject well.

Oh, wow! I really didn't expect such a kind response, especially after giving carte blanche to critique it! Thank you all.
And, RJS, thanks expecially to you since you're such a master at this medium! To answer your question, I don't paint in wc often because of the lack of control. Guess I'm a control freak & watercolors frustrate me.

That giraffe has lots of character to it. His left eye is really inquisitive looking in a Jack Sparrowish kind of vein. Tilt that chin a little more to his right and make that left eye even a little bigger and you have a Disney grade character there. Nicely done.

Now that is why I prefer digital painting! Since it's watercolor, there's little else I can do with it now! lol But I was hoping for tips for the future & I'll definitely keep those pointers in mind if & when I venture into watercolors again!
Hmmm, wonder if Disney is buying? lol!
RJS, don't forget that I've seen your work!

Hi J Lynn the beauty of W.C. is that they have an effect of acting how they want and often you get a serendipity result.why would you not want that to happen?
your painting is an example of just that.well done it is a delightful fresh true W.C. Cheers Lorrir.

Your use and control of color is really, really good. That's just one of many things about it, but it's what really caught my eye at first glance.
