Well, after much meditation and ..well nevermind, I'm going to try Justin. Here is hoping you recognize the little bugger when I'm done. It will be toward the end of the week when I get done. Little guys are very hard for me to do. unsure.gif

Nice job siksnosparnyte. By the way, when I was more active in Amateur radio, I talked with a couple of guys from your city (1986) My guess is they were using a radio club station.

Venus
biggrin.gif Dors, I think you did a great job on drawing Justin!! The shading and hair are fantastic, the only thing I can see that may need looking at are his eyes and his teeth. (But I am not that great at portraits, so...) LOL

Hi Dors,

Nice sketch and good likeness.

Three things on the proportions jump out at me.

1. The tilt of the head seems to be off. I would tilt the head about 5 degrees clockwise.
2. The iris of the eyes are too wide but the height between the lids looks right on.
3. The forehead is too short. The distance between the features seems ok though. I would consider dropping everything, from the eyebrows down, at least the distance of one eye height.

When I prepare a portrait it can take me as many as two hours to get the key measures on paper using an eye as a measure. Some people are doing the whole drawing in this time. Good thing we use photos, because no one could ever sit long enough to go through my measuring mania.
katie_cuddles1
Heres my effort, quite a quickly done. What do you think???
im not sure how to do the delicate edges of flowers so they look realistic, if someone could give me some tips??
Katie
meow2000
very nice katie_cuddles1 smile.gif , the fowers look great
rjblanchette
Thanks for hosting this week's challenge Meow.

Here's my shot at Justin. The hair was wild and as you can see from my errors, tough to draw. I vote he combs it for the next time. biggrin.gif

[attachmentid=6836]

A4 160 gr card, 6B, 2B, F, 4H

Draw time 6 hours

P.S. In regard to my post to Dors, even though I didn't spend enough time on the rendering, I did spend an hour and a half on measuring.

Looks great for a quick effort. You almost had the delicate edges. Just get rid of the hard lines on the edges with an architect's eraser and do the same thing you did with the rest of the petals.
katie_cuddles1
Thanks for the advise, i will have a go at it in the morning biggrin.gif

Wow!! Everyone has done so well that I am a little shy about mine, but here it is. blush.gif

Seems to me you did a fine job with the hair; in fact, you did a great job of drawing even some hair that is cropped out of the photo!
Dors
Thank you rj

I have worked a little more on this..(before I read your post) .I think maybe I will start over and work on the things you have raised. I do appreciate feedback...I have visitors for a couple of days...so may not get back to this before the week is over. but I will post when I have finished it.

Thank you
dors

i seem to be a bit rough on the edges, and I have to practice hair...to get that nice smooth shiny look.
I will keep at it... practice practice practice... smile.gif I will get there

I have seen portraits that are let down by "rush to complete it" hair, all it needs really is time. I look at your drawing and I just know that time is all you need, your likeness is great, your hand seems steady and I believe that if you just take one section of the hair at a time (even if it is over the course of a couple days) it will come together nicely...

Well done though.

Hi Exactly,

That is a good point. Looking at some of the drawings in this challenge it seems that there is just one quick layer of graphite to represent the hair. Now that's okay if the exercise is just to get a good likeness and correct proportions. But to get believable hair several layers of graphite are needed and that takes time! I mentioned that I spent six hours on my version. Of that 1.5 hours to create the sketch, 2.5 hours on the hair and 2 hours for the rest. If this was a keeper, I would have spent between 15 and 20 hours on it. You just can't get the quality without spending the time. You need to draw as if you had all the time in the world.
Dors
rjblanchette
your drawing of Justin is just so perfect. I can see the difference between yours and mine... I know I will get there. I just need to take it slower and spend more time on a portrait. I am learning that the more time you take on the measurements (like you say) the better result you get. I see some artists work on a small section at a time..I don't seem to be able to do that. I have to work all over and then keep going over and over.
What is everyone's thoughts on this. which is the best way?

dors
meow2000
rjblanchette, I love how you did Justin. wub.gif

Cyn, your Justin is really good too biggrin.gif

Justin is a hard guy to draw it's nice that everyone is trying him biggrin.gif and there all so nicely done . cool.gif
rjblanchette
Quick update. I just wanted to give the kid a neck. How else could he be a pain in one without one. laugh.gif

Comedy is not my strong point.

I'm glad that you liked the portrait Meow.

[attachmentid=6845]
Cyn
Holy cow, RJ... I thought the first one you posted was perfect and then you updated it.. wow...

I need to learn patience. If I can't do something in a few minutes, then I get impatient and really make mistakes. I usually only have a few minutes. I will have to work on just one drawing every chance I get instead of trying to do it in one short session.. Life just happens, ya know? rolleyes.gif
I was doing well and life got in the way. Now I am back and really have to get serious.. In a fun way..

Great Justin, Dors. Every one is doing great. If I missed you, I am still impressed with all of these.

Siks, GREAT guitar.. I tried it and it looked like a golf club. laugh.gif Maybe I will try it again..

awwe the little boy seems to be pretty popular ...I also am working on his portrait . everyone has done a great job capturing the cute look on his face .

[attachmentid=6850][attachmentid=6850]My drawing time for the week is up, and what is worse I lost concentration for this week. I do want to congratulate all those who did Justin -DORS, RJ AND CYN.. what fine jobs. Mine won't look nearly as nice, and I had a solution to my problems. Since half of my grandkids are Wyoming cowgirls and cowboys--I took a picture of him with a bandana over his nose and mouth. Won't need to do any measuring RJ. Well better not post it so here is mine. I don't have a scanner and you get lots of variants with a digital camera. This is probably closest to my drawing.
SLIM

I tried to get this 2nd file next to the first to show the variation but it didn't work.

Dors, you know the answer, there is no best way. But of course every one has a method. For a portrait I start with those boring measures. Once I'm satisfied with the sketch I usually start with the eyes. I figure that if I don't get the eyes right there is no need to continue. From there I'm pretty much like you. I like getting that first layer of graphite down and moving around a bit. Same thing with other subjects, I always start with the part that is the most important to the success of the drawing. If I get that right I'll finish it, if I don't it will probably end up in the bin.

rj yes I do know ... we all have our own method... It's strange, but I think thats why I prefer to just do my own thing at home.... good to read and look what everyone is doing and gain knowledge, share our ideas.. but at the end of the day..it is whatever method we feel most comfortable with ourselves.

I really do appreciate the feedback and help... It does help us to improve.

I just want to learn and enjoy the art I do.... to improve and feel wow... did I do that smile.gif

I know what you mean, Dors. I am just learning and I keep a saying on my desk by Eric Gill that says,

"The artist is not a different kind of person,
but every person is a different kind of artist"

It sure keeps me from getting discouraged. Even about life..laugh.gif
Exactly
Hey RJ

I tell people that all the time and they don't get it, In almost all of the portraits that I do, I treat the hair as a project all of its own. I am working on another set of projects right now and I don't know if I will finish in time to be able to take a shot at this little guy, plus I don't own a printer so I would have to look at the computer screen for a long time to capture this cutie.
Hopefully by the 17th of this month when I go on vacation I will be able to take a wack at it.

Hi everone,
I like to say that I have enjoyed viewing everyone's Challenge pic's...
they've been great.
I have attached 2 photos, taken with my mobile then uploaded onto the computer...
sorry about the quality... I didn't think about not having a printer or scanner at this time...
they both went awol at the beginning of the year.. & I haven't decided or quite saved enough for my new ones.
I have only spent about 6 hrs ( in 1/2 hr intervals) on this so far and still have a lot further to go...
so please excuse my posted results at this time. TFL.

Both photos of the same pic, where i was up to in my drawing.

hugs Elle
