I have heard of them, but have had no experience with them. I don't know how good their stuff is, so I can't really help you.

I have never heard of them so I can't help either. You're probably not getting any responses because of that or, as Isshinart says, because no one has experience with them.

Hello! I've heard of artacademy.com from art mags but I don't know if Michael Britton's dvd's are any good. He went to the Art students league of NY and NY art academy, one of the best schools in NYC. I've been told from the people at the league that Britton's a very good artist. But if you're looking to learn more about figure drawing, I listed some artists who studied and taught at ASL. Their books are a good companion if you're learning on your own or taking classes because they make it easier. smile.gif

While I'm sure these dvds are likely quite good and the artists gifted, to be honest, the principles of drawing are available free of charge and this site shows many of them in Brenda's lessons.

No book or website or dvd will provide you with instant drawing skills. They come with time and practice - years of practice. My recommendation would be to draw every day, join a local drawing group - or start one and keep practicing. You'll get there.

Great advice girl! That is exactly what I plan to do. Draw that is, and peruse this site when I can. Can you tell me more about the right pencils to use for sketching? Or is there a guide that I could get? I sounds fundemental, but I always seem to be maybe working with the wrong type or so I think?

Also do you know anyone that uses a Wacom tablet & photoshop? Some of the things look interesting other than working outside on location with it...stick to pad and pencil for that.

Have you dabbled in that electronic field?

Hello, I'm a newbie here - I just ordered the DVD's from ArtAcademy last Friday and should be getting them this week. I'll let you know if they were worth it. (they do have a 1 year guarantee) I've been drawing all of my life and I've never been able to do portraiture. I can't tell you how many books I have studied and how much I've tried, but I just can't get it. sad.gif So I figured if I saw someone doing it, maybe it would click!

Thank you painter48 .. you prove to so many people that this is not just drawing a line on paper .. it takes skill and LOTS of practice to get it right .. please keep trying because it will come .. dont expect too much too soon .. have fun and do some lessons here and your artistic side will bloom ...ask questions thats something you can not do with a book or dvd ..we are personal and we can answer your questions .. good luck and cant wait to see some of your work .

For a basic set of drawing pencils, I'd recommend an HB, 2B and 4B, that would give a good range of lights and darks. I personally use mechanical pencils with different leads in them, but its just a personal choice, the wooden pencils work just as well as you can buy the very dark leads up to 8B to really get those intense tones.
I can complete a portrait with a single pencil, just varying pressure.

I'd suggest that you try completing a value scale - I gave instructions about how to do one awhile back. I'll have a search for the thread. It will really help you realize the ranges you can achieve with both presseure and a single pencil or simply a range of different pencils.

I have a digital tablet and photoshop but haven't used it much - just lack of time mostly. Try the Digital Art thread at WetCanvas. It should get you started.

Onsource, I use a Wacom but don't use PS for art. My software of choice is Painter but I've also used Paint Shop Pro, Pixia, Art Rage & various other software trials. I always come back to Painter.

Onsource, I went to a local arts and craft store we have in the U.S. and bought the START drawing pencil set. Came with needed eraser, 9 different pencils all various shades, a ruler and a metal sharpener. It is one of the best pencil sets I have used. I love it. It is also made by the Cumberland Pencil Factory that makes the famous Derwent series of pencils and coloured pencils. Its cheap here for the set I think I paid 10 dollars for it all. Alot of the time for just sketching I like Jeanette just like using various mechanical pencils. Preferably one with the .09 lead. Anyways hope that helps. rolleyes.gif
