Lily, I cut and use Bristol velum paper cut to the size of playing cards because the Bristol is a little heavier. I have used card stock but prefer mine thicker. When I use watercolor, I cut watercolor paper to card size. That way the paper doesn't buckle with the water. Some people take playing cards and paint gesso over them and do their art over that.
Hope you can join the next one. Jeanne

Hi Jeanne,
Do you think it's a problem to use a "normal" drawing paper (100g/m² I think)?
It seems a little bit thin to me...
If not I am going to stick my firsts onto bristol
Jangra
Oct 2 2007, 08:01 AM
Since they are called cards, I would think regular paper is too thin, but I do know others who glue onto thicker paper. There are even people who do collages on these cards.

Thank you Marisol. If you ever want a private trade, I do some of those too.
Hi Jeanne,
I would love to to a private trade sometime. I have yet to make even one trading card, so it might take me a while to produce something worth trading, but this sounds like a great way to get started.

It is a great way to get started. I started with a project in another forum and now have done several. They are addictive. I do a lot of my work now on these cards. Easy to practice with new ideas, mediums, etc as you don't have as much time or paper invested if you don't like the results.
My medium of choice is graphite. I moved from there to add colored pencil, then watercolor pencil with a waterbrush, then watercolor with a waterbrush. I did my first watercolors on cards and now I'm getting comfortable in that medium also. As you can see all my cards so far for this trade have been in watercolor.
so don't stress and just enjoy the process.

You won't disapoint anybody Thunderbird, your Dracula and Headless horseman are really good.
I've got a question for all of you : During halloween, children visit houses to get sweets, what do they say to have these sweets ?
I know the French expression ("Des bonbons ou la vie !" => "Sweets or life!"), but I can't find the exact English one...

I am relatively new to watercolor. I started with watercolor pencil and a waterbrush. I still use the waterbrush with the watercolors. I use the pans instead of the tubes, and don't use a lot of water. I think that is why they are brighter. I used to paint with oils but don't like thm now, too messy. So I almost use the watercolors like I did the oils only using the water to thin.

OK, here's my ten. To force myself to be creative, I didn't actually use any references. Well, I did let myself glance at photos of skulls and wild turkeys, but even those I put away when it was time to draw.
[attachmentid=7504]
The thing I love about doing these cards is it's an excuse to experiment with new things, while simultaneously a push to bring those experiments to completion. Each one of these cards was a useful learning experience.

I agree and the best thing is that it makes you sit down and have to think in terms of a specific topic.
It also helps with staying on trace as there is a time frame for the completion of these.
I have only done 7 so far but want to get the rest finished tonight.
