Hi all,
Welcome to Snoopy 101 Halloween Cartoon Challenge...My name is Brian David and it is my pleasure to be your host.
Though I am no expert on this....
Charles M SchulzWith out a doubt one of my most favorite artists of all time ...Most of us know him as the creator of the great comic strip Peanuts...and of course the creator of the one and only Snoopy! I grew up with Snoopy ...I can't imagine a world with out him....certainly my most favorite character to draw...I decided to dedicate and name the challenges after him..
" Believe it or not " some of Schulz's first drawings were published by R. Ripley from .."Ripley's believe it or not"...On October 2nd 1950 " Peanuts" made it's first appearance in a comic strip published by the United Feature Syndicate.....it then became one of the most popular comic strips of all time.
In 1966 Charles M Schulz created a critically acclaimed animated television special called "It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown". To honour the tradition of this classic and with Halloween approaching I decided to do this challenge.
My ChallengeSimply draw one of the pictures I have provided...since this mostly challenges our drawing skills... in addition to this I would like you to write a punch line under your drawing or you may use a cartoon bubble if you wish......try to make your characters come to life with a few words or sentences of creative writing. I have found a great way to create is... I try to think of what was going through the creators mind such as Charles M Schulz's when he created these drawings.
You may use any type of mediums you like but please no computer graphics...you may use your computer for text if you wish.
Hope you all enjoy this challenge..Happy drawings,
Brian.

Thought I would get this one started. Actually I am cheating with this one. I did this quick sketch for another challange, but thought it fit well here.

Hi all,
T-bird I remember the first time I tried to draw Linus....I found the shape of his head kind of tricky to draw...same as Charlie Brown his face is round but is not a perfect circle..

I think you did a great job on this and I really like your drawing!
Katie I know how terrible the flue can be so I hope your feeling better very fast..
Here is my first drawing I just finished sketching .... with a few words of my own at the bottom...
Cheers!
Brian.
Ohhh Brian. That is excellent.. I love the byline.. Very clever.

Glad you joined in the challenge.
Happy drawings all, Brian.
Love the Snoopy, Minion.
Thanks Bri-guy.. I see on the calendar that it is your Thanksgiving. Ours is the end of November.. Today is our Columbus Day. It's to celebrate Columbus discovering America, although the Native Americans mostly wear black arm bands and some tribes gather at Plymouth Rock and we mourn. Ha Ha Ha

True story..
Happy Thanksgiving.
Brian David Dekter
Oct 8 2007, 02:26 PM
Thanks
Cyn...and happy Columbus day!

Now is this a holiday where most actually get the day off work thanks to Columbus....or just a day for the native tribes to go to Plymouth Rock ?......
The banks and government offices are closed but everyone else has to work and go to school.
I don't really see why Columbus was so important. It's not like he was actually the first one to discover us. The guy thought he landed in India, duh, and that's why we are called Indians. (In case no one knew that.)
In 1497, the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci discovered this country, and it was named America by the map maker, Martin Waldseemuller.
However, it was later realized that Amerigo’s friend, Christopher Columbus, had been here in 1492.
More recently evidence has appeared showing that it was the Chinese Admiral Cheng Ho who discovered America in 1421. And then of course there was Cortez..
So who deserves the credit for actually discovering America? Well, as far as I am concerned it didn't need discovering because we were already here and we knew where we were.
Brian David Dekter
Oct 8 2007, 07:06 PM

You sure put that in a funny way
Cyn ...I enjoyed reading this it is a very interesting storey....Hmmm Cheng Ho day just does not sound the same...but it sure sounds like the admiral deserves the credit too...
Best wishes for a great day.....

Cartooning is not as easy as it looks! I've enjoyed everyone's Great Pumpkin cartoons. You've all done a great job. I finally found time to try one. I drew it in pencil, then outlined it in ink and colored it with water colors.

Hi Marisolcello...welcome to the challenge! I agree....cartooning is not as easy as it looks...especially when trying to draw the classics...I think most find the shape of the head and the hands the hardest to draw...and with most... if the shape of the head is not perfect it just wont look like the character....I find cartoons are mostly made up of a bunch of solid lines where as in realism the lines can almost be non existent...and not to mention when creating your own ...you must be very creative.
I really like the water color and ink combination you used in this ...and I think your drawing is fantastic! Hope you will join in with more.

Thanks for your encouragement Brian! Yes, you are right about the need to get the shape of the head perfect. I can see where mine is not--after I inked it.
I've been doing Brenda's drawing program, step-by-step, and in the beginning I did not want to draw cartoons (even though my natural style is somewhat cartoonish). But, because you have to work on perfecting the head shapes, etc., I now find it very useful, and fun, to draw cartoons. Thanks for your challenges!

Hi Brian I love your snoopy. Thanks for the lovely cartoon pictures and give us a month to post.
I used marker and color pencils.
Give me some advice good or bad to improve my skills.
Any idea I can remove my ink stain at the bottom. I did not notice my marker is leaking and this is my first color cartoon and i was so disappointed.

Hi
Lily great to see you join in the challenge...and thanks for your kind words....please don't be disappointed I think your drawing is wonderful...and I like the wording you used...Not sure what type of pencils you are using but I highly recommend Prisma pencils for cartoons...actually I like to use Prisma markers...also I would use a good quality paper such as marker paper for markers or a good thick smooth Bristol... I like to use Strathmore, or at times I use a high grade printer paper...I tend to color my drawings first before I ink them when using marker.... if I am using pencil I would likely ink first and then color. As far as ink stains you can always crop your image for posting them or most scanners have an eraser feature. I think original ink stains may be difficult to remove though there may be special erasers out there for that.
I have cropped your image for you ...hope you don't mind....and glad if I helped.

Lily, I think your cartoon is terrific! If you look at mine, you will see a little splotch on the moon. This is where I used white-out to try to remove an ink spot. As you can see, it still shows up.
Brian, what a great idea to remove a splotch with the aid of the computer! Seems a little like cheating, but I guess the computer is just another of the artist's many tools!
Speaking of markers, do you know if there are there any transparent markers (highlighters, I guess) that would work like watercolors and not obscure the ink line? I do use highlighters occasionally, but they come in such limited colors.

Hi Marisolcello
I am really one against cheating and I never use any fancy tools....and all my drawings are sketched 100% free hand...or I just would not feel good about them....but for posting drawings I think it is okay to use your computer to remove marks..naturally it does no good for your original copy..
As I said to Lily I particularly like Prisma markers though they are not transparent...I find if I ink after I color there is no way I will obscure the ink line...I have used this technique on many of my drawings in my gallery.
Here is an example of a drawing I did and actually designed this one so Disney does not even have it ..lol..
Here I first did the rough sketch in 2H pencil then Prisma color marker and then inked it....

Cute cartoon! Makes me one to try one where two cartoon characters are sketching each other.
I do agree on the concept of cheating. I took a pen and ink drawing class years ago. If you made an ink mistake, you were supposed to work the error into the drawing. So, for my splotch on the moon, I should have made it into a bat or a witch, or the Great Pumpkin, rather than trying to cover it up.
Yet, on the other hand, sometimes tools are helpful, depending on your own personal vision of art.
I do have a set of Prismacolor art markers and will see what I can do with them, next time. But, my personal style is to create something more pen-and-inky with hatching and cross-hatching for shading, and a wash of color.
All the best,
Marilyn

Oct 17 2007, 04:11 PM

Thanks
Cyn Kid..but I don't think I am even half as talented as you are....
Hi
Marilyn...that is very interesting as far as working mistakes into your drawing.. I have done that on more occasions then I would like to say....lol...

here are my thoughts and I have said this before...
We all have a different approach to drawing ...some like to draw sketchy ..some like to draw squiggly....some like to draw rough and hard while others like to draw soft and gracefully....some like to draw when they paint some like to paint when they draw.
I think all artists should go with what ever mediums they are comfortable with and slip into their own style...and preferences..Graphite is still my favorite choice of mediums for sketching .... ink and markers are my favorite choice for cartoons...I think you should keep going with your own personal style and what you enjoy best.....that's my 2 cents...
Here is another I did with the same process for a earlier challenge I hosted...first sketched with 2h pencil then added prisma marker then added the ink lines...
Happy drawings, Brian.

I used Derwent color pencils and just cartridge 110 gsm paper.
Thanks Brian for your advice and new image. That's better.
First I did the rough sketch with HB pencil (very light) and I erased and traced with color pencils according to their outlines and colored and finally inked it.
