Hi Lori,

This kind of thing happens to me sometimes, not with drawing ever (so far) but with other things. I think it happens when I'm too focused on the end product: I know I want to get to X, and I'm sure X will be easy for me, and I know how to do X, so I rush and lose patience and fail. I don't know if that's the same thing that's happening with you or not.

The antidote is to do something you don't know how to do as well. Try colored pencils, markers, even crayons (have you ever seen Don Marco's incredible work?) If you try something new, you focus your attention on the process rather than the end product. This generally works for me, anyway. Hope this helps you.

I'm not sure it can be called a "blocks" with my drawing. There are times when i am just not inspired. So it may be a block of sorts. But when i do this i always know how to get inspired. I find something i love and draw it. I don't pressure my self. I just have fun. If it is a flop I crush it up and throw it in the trash and find something else. After a while I can draw what ever i want again. biggrin.gif

Yeah, it has happen to me sometimes either when I try to draw though I'm not feeling like drawing or if I haven't drawn in a while.

My method of solving this problem is by look at some old things I've drawn and try to redraw it, and if I succeed with a good re-draw, I have mostly regain my temporarily lost drawing skill.

Hi Lori,

I think that happens to me, sometimes I just can't seem toget my hands to draw anything at all. My Husband thinks that happens when i'm trying to hard drawing , when i'm not relaxed . blink.gif

When that happens i'll take brake for a few hours or a day . Or try some thing new to draw.

Has happen to me as well ....and trust me when I say blocked I mean blocked its like I forgot how to draw .. I just wait it out until something or someone inspires me .

I'm glad I'm not the only one that goes through this. I guess it's normal.

Thank goodness we are all normal... I sometimes sit there blank. I try drawing something and I can't get it.
other days it just flows.

thanks everyone, at least i know that i am not alone. i am going to follow all suggestions and start tonight, draw some things that i have drawn before, maybe try it in color pencils or maybe crayons, yes i have that site of the crayon artist bookmarked, he is fantastic. i think i will just get everything out and play around with it. thanks everyone.

I dispise the "block". I fill frustrated when I can not draw. I always notice when I get a drawers "block" that it is when I have a lot of stress and too much thinking. Once I take a deep breath and relax it all comes back. I have not created anything in about two weeks now and I almost want to scream...it's good to know that I am not the only one going through it.

I totally know how you feel. I go through points where I just cannot seem to get any of it right on the paper and I realize that I must just put down the pencil or whatever my medium is down and stop.

I say you perhaps take this time of being blocked artistically and just play around with different mediums you might not have used before, or used, but haven't really gotten into and possibly create an abstract piece from it where you just play with color and shape and not like an actual object or picture. Something you don't have to think about, or get frustrated with, and just let your hands do the work and your love of color do the work.

That's what I would do at least. When I want to draw and just can't seem to get it out, and everything is going wrong with the piece, I will usually do something like that. Sometimes the very experimental abstracts I come out with turn out to be cool little pieces of work, and sometimes they don't turn out as well as I would like and I gesso over my canvas and just do it again.

The great thing about doing experimental abstract pieces where you learn about color and such is that you don't have that frustration of trying to get everything correct on a more realistic piece. You just let it flow...plus it gets a lot of emotion out...

I hope this helps...if you try it I think it would though because you'd take it as a learning materials time in your artistic block. tongue.gif

Long time no see everybody! I've been going through my own kind of block...called "KIDS"... seriously though...we all but our heads against a block now and again...sometimes you can work your way through it and sometimes you just have to ride it out!

Hope to be around a bit more now!

Welcome back Laura...nice to see you. smile.gif

Interesting topic Lori...you sure are not alone....seems to happen to me all the time where I find many of my drawings wind up in the bin....I find if I take a break and start off fresh again that helps...Also I draw because I want to not because I have to.

Happy drawings, Brian.

I have a block and that's why I started doing clowns. Like BRB said, I wasn't inspired. I needed something and now I have become obsessed with clowns. At least looking at them makes me happy. Anyway I am now back at the challenges.. It took a while because life happens and my brain couldn't slow down enough to really draw.. I feel like I am starting all over from the beginning, but I will keep at it.. Good luck to you..

Good to see you back Laura.. What a wonderful surprise.. wub.gif

That happens to me sometimes, too. I just can't get it to come out right, even if I've drawn the same thing before. But, usually, if I take a break and go back later, it comes out better. biggrin.gif

I've just come out of a three month block where I couldn't bring myself to draw anything worthwhile. What I did do was doodle everyday for a few minutes, whether I felt like or not, or worked on rendering values with all of my different pencils....and I have a LOT!!!

I really sympathise with you. Give this a try and see if it works for you, too. If nothing else, you'll have practiced regularly and probably improved your drawing level a tad.

Hope you're up and drawing again soon smile.gif
