My order from DickBlick.com got here today, and so I finally have some drafting film and some Stonehenge paper to try. I'm drawing some quicky marbles to test them out, and compare them to the other media I've tried. First, the drafting film:

This is very cool stuff: it's absolutely smooth, but not slick, like ground glass. Compared to the paper I've been using, CPs go on more easily without any white speckles showing through. I like it a lot.

This is on Stonehenge:

I'm a little disappointed; it's not as magical as I expected. It does have a wonderful fine texture, but I like the look of the drafting film better.

Ernest, this is a lovely marble. Does the drafting paper come in tablet form from Dick
Blicks? How thick is it?

The drafting film comes in sheets about 18x24", about $2 a sheet I think it was. It's very thin but stiff plastic, 0.003 inches thick.

Ernest,
You have to remember that your Stonehenge paper is going to take many, many layers. Layers are what give you dimension and richness to a CP drawing. Even your drafting film will take 5 or 6 light layers and you will want to use them. The paper will take upwards of 20 layers. CP is sheer(?) each layer shines through the last and makes your picture glow. Also remember that you want to use a very light touch. Jeanette has said that she holds her pencil at the end to really have a light touch.
Another thing to remember is that because CP is sheer you want to build your colours. For example the purple marble, you might start with an opposite colour, yellow, since you know that you want it to be bright, the opposite colour will do this for you. Then you want to start with your lightest colour and work your way to darkest. Purple is made up of blue and red so both of those colours can find there way into the mix as well as any purples that you feel work. Your shading can be darkened with your opposite colour rather then black. You will also want to give thought to how your surroundings affect your marble, example, the sunset, trees, other marbles, etc.

Not trying to duck out of this challenge... It has been a very busy week and I have lost myself in doing a portrait of my Dad...
I will get to finish this challenge... I want to know that I CAN do it.

I will be away for 4 days from Thursday this week. We are going down to Brisbane...staying at my sons. Nev will be tied up with his sport/hobby. Giving me some free time...so back to the marbles. smile.gif smile.gif

The challenge will be over...but I will post it when I get back home.

Wow cool, they are all so very good. It is amazing to see what each person took from the picture and how they interpreted it.
