hey everyone! i just joined a few days ago and i love the site and community. the feedback is great! i decided to work through all of the lessons even if i know the topic well, always room for improvment right! well anyways i decided to check out the SEEING VALUES LESSON B-06, and it is really hard for me! i've never been the greatest at shading, i just dont seem to have the knack for it. and this lesson brought to my attention this is something i really should work on! anyone have any advice or tips on shading/hatching/crosshatching? personal tricks? thanks a lot i'd really appreciate it!

Hi,

Welcome to Drawspace!

There are many different shading techniques. Brenda is the absolute goddess of hatching and crosshatching, but not everybody can do it the way she does. Other people use a technique called circulism which, oversimplifying, means shading by building up layers of tiny, tiny overlapping circles. Circulism is slow but gives amazing results. I (and other folks here) use a technique which I've heard called scumbling, sort of like circulism but with larger oval shapes.
