Full Version: What it's worth?

Hi everybody,
I need your advice! Recently my mom hung up one of my drawings in the surgery she works in(she's a dental assistant) and it was so to a patient's liking that he asked her if I could draw it again so he could buy it for his wife for Christmas.
But i really have no idea how much money I could charge for something like that.
It's a new (little better) version of this drawing I already loaded up here and it took me about four hours to finish it: http://www.drawspace.com/forums/uploads/11..._3187_23930.jpg

Hi Nuke,

on the pastel forum that I belong to we had a discussion on this very thing recently - it is hard to decide when you are not used to charging for your work.

With the pastels it can be really hard to work out the amount of materials and if you are like a lot of us you don't work on the one piece consistantly - may be you work on a couple together or put a piece away for a while. Then it is hard to recal all the work that you put in - not to mention all th eplanning for an original work before you even put pencil/pastel/paint to paper.

What was suggested by one member that I have decided to use myself is the square inch method.

Say your piece is 10" x 12" then it would be 120 square inches so it would be $120 then add the cost of any framing, say $100, then the piece that you would be valued at $ 220.

I feel that this method takes that emotional connection, that we all get for so many of our pieces, out of the equation and allows us to get a base pricing method. Of course as you become more well known you can then start to charge a little more etc.

Oh my god! When my purchaser asked me how much I would charge for my drawing I told him I really had no idea what it was worth and it would be disconcerting for me to define any price. He should take it home and bring me what this piece was worth to him. Today he brought back 70€!!(That's about 102 USD)

Very motivating biggrin.gif
