An illustrated discussion surrounding a photo of a horse's head focuses on the process of breaking down a seemingly complex subject into simple shapes.

Well, I was enjoying this lesson. I wasn't doing an amazing job, but I thought I was doing ok.
My 3 year old daughter waited for me to walk away from the art table, and then decided to show me how it should be done.

Heh! Kids are a blessing sometimes.

Dear Dusty,
Thanks for the giggle! You both did a great job with the drawing!
Many years ago, I had one of my completed portrait commissions set up nicely on my drafting desk, all ready to show the client. When I was out of the room, my then 3-year-old daughter decided to add a few final touches with a colored pencil. Thankfully, she missed the facial section; I simply erased what I could, and added a lovely background with creative crosshatching graduations.
Today my daughter has two children of her own; as they get older, I will take great delight in telling them this story about their Mom!
Hence, please make sure you keep this drawing in a safe place! Revenge is sweet (and a lot of fun)!

Wow! I guess it’s a good thing you are such a talented artist and could fix the issue.
Oh and I will remind her of this often over the next few years. And keep the picture out of affection for her.
Anyhow, here is the horses head, part 2

. The nose is a bit out I think:

When I started this drawing, I thought: 'Oh god, this will never work out properly with those sticks!'. I was all wrong, it's a really great way to make the shapes of the horse head. Thank you, Brenda, for this wonderful lesson! Thanks to you, I've started drawing again!
Here is my drawing; I have to say, one of my best in the last months!
Kind regards,
Fabian

In all honesty, at first I was thinking "Ugh. A horse. Why would I possibly want to draw a horse?"
BUT I gave it a shot nonetheless and that hour and half just became one of the most fulfilling I've spent in weeks.
It turned out great! I can't believe I did it.
Thank you so much!

I am so happy to have discovered you, Brenda!! I'm 34yo and since my childhood I haven't drawn a single smiley face until 3 weeks ago, when I started dreaming about drawing (I swear!!). After 10 days in a row with the crazy dreaming, I decided to take some action and started looking on the net for free resources - who knows if I would even like drawing!! - and there you were! I don't think my horse is very proportional, anyway, I just LOVE your lessons, and you must really be a wonderful person to put on with all this work for us!
GREAT WORK!!!
PS: Love your cartoons, too!
Thank you!

I am new to drawing and these lessons are great. I have drawn some cartoons from other drawing web sites with step by step directions, but the horse's profile is the first things I have drawn with only a picture. I am just happy they look like a horse. I have a long ways to go before I am good but I am having a great time doing it. Here are my horse drawings.

using my parents' digital camera to post these currently. will probably put up a scanned version when i get back to school.
I think the face is a little long (of course it is, its a horse

) and the eyes may be a bit big/high up. other than that i'm fairly happy with it.
i think i'm gonna go back and post a few of the earlier lessons i did and then continue on to the second horse.
i'm loving this site so far. tons of information at a great price

edit: just finished the challenge horse. added it to the post
edit2: got back to school to my scanner. better now

I am so glad that I found this site! I've never thought I could draw, couldn't even do justice to a stick figure. Except yesterday evening I drew a HORSE and I was thrilled with him. I put him in my gallery so I'd have something in there :-)

Hello DrawSpace Folk.
Here's my first lesson, first submission. Never had any art training, although I really like to sketch. So looking forward to building some skill.
And such I had fun at the exercise... I did the challenge as well.

At least you can tell it is a horse! I will definitely have to work on proportions and shading a lot more.

Okay - here is my attempt at the challenge. I did the first drawing twice and both drawings look like it fell out of the ugly tree and hit a few branches on the way down. So I'll stick with the one that I'm proud of!
Oh and I have to add - I stumbled on this site two weeks ago. I started reading and before you know it I was scratching for a pencil. It took 4 days to get to a shop to buy proper paper but my husband must see talent as he went and bought me A3 drawing paper for my Rhino pic (Completed 10/06/08). (I'll post this in the appropriate spot - once I find it)

This was a fun lesson. I had never attempted to draw a horse before because I thought it too difficult. Breaking it down by shapes makes this project much simpler. I still have a ways to go with shading techniques though.
The Horse Head Challenge was even tougher, and I'm not too happy with the outcome, but here it is anyway.
