Often I feel as if I am an alien trying to express my experiences and feelings in pencils and paint when there is no words to express what I wish to say. But once in a while someone makes a comment that causes me to believe that someone understands what I am trying to express in my art. I wonder if anyone else feels this way.
For an example a customer recently placed this comment in our local newspaper. As I read the words I realized that someone actually came close to understanding what I was trying to express.
"This letter is in response to the recent opening of Burcham Studio in Linden.
Mr. Burcham's art is worthy of high-end metropolitian galleries. He mastered the technique of painting pastels using multible color pencils. He makes the pencil lines disappear when he desires; his shading is subtle enough to stimulate watercolor or oil images.
The pastel we purchased from him this year at his Strand Theater art show demonstrated his inventiveness and creativity. Half of the area of the work was abstract, the other half realistic. However, the styles blended harmoniously. Some of the roses seemed three-dimensional. He countered intuitiveley added color as needed to enhance the complementary color effect (e.g. green splashes in the red rose petals). The table on which the roses lay defied gravity; it was tilted at an angle. He added a horizontal rose petal at the bottom of the table to keep the viewer from feeling off balance. Much of his design comes spontaneously and not by formula.
Congratulations, Mr. Burcham.
Dr. and Mrs. Thomas R Duncan."
I would like to add to this that the rose is one special object that seems to speak to all of us in a special way and that I did not feel I gave them the dignity they deserve. It is however, refreshing and encouraging to hear that someone comes close to appreciating what we labor to do.

So nice when someone likes your work enough to buy it, but even more delicious when they like it enough to talk about it in the paper. That should bring you more customers. Congratulations on that and your new studio.

Congratulations! I think you've became to very high level with your art. It's very hard to express your feelings and thoughts in art, but even harder to make the others understand what you have to say.

How wonderful to have a review that speaks from the heart. I hope that it attracts the attention of people who are looking for a piece that speaks to them. Good luck with your new studio.
