I'm wondering if anyone here would be interested in a weekly drawing challenge? A reference image (non copyright) could be chosen and everyone who is interested could participate using any type of pencil, as long as its drawing.
It would be good practice for all levels. Comments?

I don't think it needs to be a competition as such, just a place to try your hand at drawing and learn from others as well as get some practice. I'll wait and see what Brenda says.
I'm glad you'll become involved in it Woo.

Fantastic idea IslanderNL!!!
I'd be thrilled to offer a prize of an autographed copy of Drawing for Dummies, including free shipping and handling to anywhere in the world. Maybe the draw could take place on December first?
Assuming we open the first weekly challenge on October 5st, we have 8 weeks between then and December 1st, so, if artists wish to do the challenge of the week, every week, they would have their name in for the draw 8 times?
We would need to set up a special gallery for each of the 8 weekly challenges.
We already have several photos in the Inspirational Gallery - maybe we could even use some of those for the 8 challenges? And of course we can ask members to submit other photos (that have been taken by them of course) to also use as references.
We can take suggestions from our members on how the challenge should work. After reviewing all suggestions, I will post the official guidelines for the book give-a-way on October 4th, and the first challenge would begin on October 5th.
Over to members for ideas between now and September 30!!! Also, I'll have to ask admin the best way to set this up?

why not 8 different lessons from easy to hard then every one can have a go and get some practice in at the same time.. if people find one challenge too hard then they can have a go at an easier one and visa versa
make it a bit more of a challenge by getting people to add something extra to the lessons.. i love a good challenge

Thanks for your generosity Brenda. I'm sure the incentive of your book will spur people on to participate! It could be, as Woo said, references of increasing difficulty over the weeks or could be images that demonstrate aspects of lessons that are on this site. A challenge element added to the week is quite possible and gives those more advanced an extra push to acheive it and those just starting out something to aim for.
One option of doing this would be for 8 separate people to 'host' a weekly challenge. They would be responsible for providing the reference image to draw for that week and also be responsible for monitoring the thread for the week as well, providing feedback, encouragement, etc.
The set up for this should be pretty simple if each week a new host volunteers to do this. At the end of the week they could send the participants names to you (or someone else), At the end of the 8 weeks, you could draw from all the submitted names for the book.

Or the winner of each week could be decided by the other posters. Noone who has entered the comp can post, and only those with a certain amount of other posts can vote. Ive seen this done at sites such as www.bluesfear.com, and it seems to work really well.

Fantastic idea, another ste that i post on has a competition once a month, that way people with a busy lifestyle have time to enter too.
As for the prize, Brenda you are very generous, and i like the idea of the winner being chosen by Brenda rather than by votes, thus making the result beyond reproach.
Lessons based subjects is a must, but i dont think doing the lessons themselves will work. We could all use the things we have learned to produce the competition piece, this will make sure we have grasped the objectives in the lesson.
What a great site this is!!

Jeanette... Wonderful idea
This could be a lot of fun for many members, and also a serious chance to increase drawing skills. I agree only memebers (not guests) be allowed to vote the winners. Though what we all should remember is that it's more of a chance to draw along with others on the subject....getting input/ideas which helps everyone improve. So in that sense everyone wins.
My vote would be for reference images, not lessons, just to keep things fresh for everyone. I'd also go for a bi-weekly drawing contest, which should give enough time, but also keep the faster drawers happy too. Sounds like fun everyone.

I'm sure the first set of challenge sessions will be the pilot run to see how they are received and how many participate. After that, if they are popular, I would suggest that they been continued purely on drawing merit alone, with no 'winner/loser' concept.
I know I have no competitive bone in my body, so drawing purely for the sake of practice and interest is where my appeal lies.

I have no idea of how a competition should work as I don't have one of those competitive bones either! lol I would like to request that the subjects be something other than lessons though.
Brenda, you are very generous to furnish such a great prize. It will definitely spur me on to do my best.
Great idea, Islander!
J
Oh, it might be best if a disinterested party does the judging just to keep hurt feelings down or a hue & cry of some kind of collusion. I've been on other sites where that sort of thing got so nasty that the competitions were discontinued. While a prize is great & is a great motivator, I'd like to see the contest done for the individual satisfaction and practice also.

Great ideas folks!
Because the skill levels of our membership vary so much, I'd like to keep the competition aspect out of this completely! Rather than a competition, let’s just have fun with this and see how many different styles and interpretations artists can come up with done from the same reference photo. Participation itself should qualify each artist for an entry.
I also think this should be done from a photo rather than a specific lesson. How about I suggest a specific technique (or techniques) for each challenge?
Yes, I also agree with the idea of having only two challenges per month instead of 4. Then, artists will not feel rushed and will still have an opportunity to receive 2 chances to win each prize!
Also, how about having two winners? In addition to Drawing for Dummies, I’ll add a second prize of an autographed copy of the CIG to Drawing people! Maybe the first draw could be November 1st and the second on December 1st.

J-Lynn i also agree with on about people from other forums that i have seen can be very nasty
plus i also see that people that havent done art in a long time also critiqie artwork aswell
We need artists that are humble and kind to judge the artwork and artists that have EXPERIENCE with art and have done art for a while plus i see alot people say its got to be this way or that way LOL as artists we are not photographers we are artists that want to creative somthing that OUR SELF WILL BE HAPPY WITH

Brenda I am presuming that this concept of offering a prize will just be a one off, to get the drawing ball rolling as it were. I agree that the competition aspect should not enter into it, the concept was purely to increase drawing skills by practice, not for it to be a contest in any form that would put pressure on people or cause anxiety.
When I said it could reflect a lesson, I meant that the reference image chosen could be one that would reinforce one of the lessons here - portraiture, animals, shading, etc. But of course, the option is open to those wishing to participate and all references will of course be reinforcing all aspects of drawing.
So now the logistics of it. Here is what needs to be decided for this to work.
1. When will the first challenge begin? I would suggest Oct 1st, simply for convenience and its the weekend so people will have a bit of time to relax and start a drawing.
2. Who will agree to provide a reference to draw for the challenges? I am willing to offer to 'host' the first one by providing the reference and keeping an eye on the thread as it progresses over the two week period.
We would then need a list of other volunteers to offer to do the same over the next 3 challenges.
3. Who will decide who wins at the end of 8 weeks? A 'name out of a hat' draw would be the most obvious and fair way to proceed. Perhaps Tehobu may like to be responsible for that as they are not taking part in the drawing aspect.
4. The thread. A new thread for each challenge tittled Drawing Challenge - Week 1, Week 2 etc. etc. The reference would be posted in that thread, along with any guidelines and all those participating would post their drawings in that thread as well as comments.
I'll wait for your go ahead on this Brenda and if everything seems good, we'll make a start on it. I think people are itching to draw!

Thank you very very much Jeanette!
Yes, I wholeheartedly agree - there should be no competition whatsoever. The prizes are simply offered so as to give an extra nudge to those who are undecided about doing the challenges! Participation is the only requirement, and fun and learning are the objective. And yes - it would be wonderful to have someone who is not participating to take care of each draw (Tehobu, would you be so kind as to consider doing the draw for the first prize on November 1st?) - and yes a name out of the hat is perfect!.
God bless yer cotton socks for offering to get this project off the ground! October 1st is perfect! Your offer to take on the first challenge is very generous, and from what I've seen of your work, you are an artistic inspiration!!!

Fabulous Brenda! Thank you for letting us move ahead on this one. Now get back to creating another of those stunning lessons!

Ok, gang, I will create the first Drawing Challenge thread and post it on Sunday morning, October 1st. It will provide the reference that everyone will be drawing and guidelines for participating. It will be great fun!
Tenobu are you on for drawing for the 1st challenge winner on Nov 1st? Ukartist, will you do the 2nd challenge draw on Dec 1st?
I am going to post another thread for people to add their names if they want to volunteer to host a challenge. There will be 4 challenges initially, bringing us up to December 1st so just 3 more people are needed to volunteer and provide a reference. At that point, we'll look at participation rates and see if people want to continue on with the challenges.

Hey! Don't forget about me!! You all know I need all the help I can get.
I did this same sort of thing on another site and totally enjoyed it. It really made me go past those mental barriers I had set up for myself. I'm in this all the way up to my neck whether I like it or not.
But UK, I don't think there's a million, in 100%. Good try though if you were thinking about a buying lottery tickets.

And, Brenda, if I win the draw, can I send you both of my books to just have you sign them? No, wait I'll keep the signed ones, and then donate mine to someone else that needs to join Drawspace and get their life back in order. That sounds like a better deal!
Thanks Island_Baby for starting this thread, and I'm glad everybody took out the competition part. As J-Lynn said, it could lead to personal problems than we don't need here. Everybody has a vision, everybody has a technique, and everybody has the skills. That's what Brenda's books have been explaining to me.
Let me know where the start line is, and I'll be sure to wear my Speedo!

Brenda I think the idea of you coming up with the photo refrences and techniques is the best idea. I also know there is a site on the internet where if you need free photo's you can go and they are free to the public and not copy righted. There are diffrent themes as well and I like going there to get refrences for my own projects. That way anyone who submits a photo doesn't get upset theirs wasn't picked. Here is the site I was talking about:
http://www.freefoto.com/index.jspHope this this helps a little. I can't wait to get started I know I am for one interested and it gives me a break from another art class I have been busy doing online also.
~Venus~

Ohhh heres another idea...I don't know if anyone else had a hard time with the perspective drawing lessons or not...but as I said I have been taking an online art class through a Career-Vocational School and I get graded on the work and exams...Well, How about buildings and houses or something with all of the vanishing points and eye level perspectives. (As you can see I don't know if my trying to explain it makes any sence because I for one am having a difficult time with it)
Just an idea...LOL
