Full Version: beyond repair...has this happened to you?
Drawspace > General > General discussion

This is a drawing that I did of a picture on the wall at my kids pediatricians office. It's funny, for years I have been saying that I wish I could find out where I could get a print of it because it is just so precious.
DUHHH, The last visit I took a picture with my camera phone and brought it home and figured I would give it a try.

I woke up this morning and I wanted to work on it a little and I noticed that something had dripped on it. I attempted to wipe it off and the paper went with it! sad.gif

Anybody have any similar story's that will make me feel better?

ohmy.gif aww..thats too bad, now you will have to start over, that particular kind of thing has not happened to me but when i first started learning watercolors, i used frisket before the paper was dry, and after lots of work and the picture came out lovely, but when i removed the frisket ..UGH, the paper came up with it..hard lesson learned well..
I am sorry that happened to your lovely work sad.gif

don't they make something called liquid paper? I'm not sure but I thought I saw in one of those art supply online catalogs in the watercolor section.. may google it and see.. and 2 I'm not sure how well that would work.. Great draw to have that happen to.. Yup Kay Gotta let that stuff dry.. Lessons are always learned the hard way huh?
texaslady-59
Okay I googled it and found it again.. I was wrong.. it isn't for torn paper it's something very different and I LIKE IT.. I added the site for you .. click on the video and watch how it is used.. Going to place an order ASAP.

If you have some of the very same paper, you can place it underneath your drawing, and with a very sharp craft knife/scalpel, and a ruler, cut out the square of torn paper, making sure you cut through the two layers of paper. Now you have a new square of paper that will fit exactly into the hole in your picture. now stick another piece underneath the hole, slightly bigger than the hole, and place your new piece into the hole and draw onto it as you had before. This is not a perfect solution but it my save you hours of work!

Check out this Drawspace thread, Fast ways to ruin a drawing. Lots of funny and sad stories there.

cool carol! I am going to get me some of that too in my next order.
texaslady-59
Ernest those were so funny !!! I have one where you don't ruin a painting but rather a good cup of coffee/glass of wine .. Dipping your dirty brush in to your coffee/wine cup/glass instead of your water bin... I do that so much you'd think I would have learned by now.. ohmy.gif

looks like fun doesn't it .. !! where's Claudio to stop me from buying more supplies.. ??

If the drawing is ruined, what you can also do is go over what you completed on the first drawing with a black marker, put a second piece of paper on top and lightly trace over it. That way you don't have to start over from scratch again. You can trace over the first and then continue were you left off.

Well, how about using yellow water colour paints. The water looks kinda like orange juice, after a long day I forgot it wasnt and after a couple of mouth fulls I realised that I was drinking paint. Not good tongue.gif
oliverandjazz

Oh yes, thats a whole different story together rolleyes.gif And no, it isnt me that licked it wink.gif . Well I know someone thats a teacher, and in her school the toilet pipes where leaking abit out of the back. As is was realy icey the leaks formed little iceikles, and some year 12's thought it was a good idea to lick the "water". Of course it wasnt "water" but whatever people flushed down the loo. She didnt say anything as they would have propably not been too happy.

Thank you all for your great ideas, I'm bummed but I guess it could have been worse. If anything good came out of my mistake it was that we all learned about "liquid paper"! LOL

Hey on that note, I'm also a hairdresser and they make this stuff called liquid skin! It's great stuff, burns a little but if you cut yourself and you put the stuff on when it dries it really works. I have to say I have had some nasty cuts, those scissors are sharp!

Thanks everyone smile.gif

That's funny, I am noticing that... it's great!
I use to do stained glass as well but it just got to be too much time wise and space. I sold alot of my stuff on ebay( by stuff I mean all the supplies that I had.

I'm sure your great at that as well

Thanks again smile.gif

Chris,
That's a beautiful picture you're copying, I hope you find a way to fix your drawing or try it again someday. I doubt it will make you feel better, but here's my latest "beyond repair" catastrophe... I spent hours just on the background, trying to get the cross-hatching just perfect... put it down for 2 minutes for a bathroom break... within my 2-year-old's reach! Ack! But poor baby, I couldn't be mad at him, he was so proud of his scribbles. This made me take a long break from drawing, but now I'm back at it and started this one over. Good luck to you Chris! -Mindy

Also... Wow, the hair looks great! (the background also) I wish I could figure out the whole hair thing, I just don't have it in me yet. I think that I just have such a heavy hand. That is my problem with all of my drawings, my hands are always so tense.

Mindy i know this will not be of much use to you but thought I'd try and clean it up for you.. May not be anything but a good print out to practice on ..

As with all things, it just takes a lot of practice. There's many tutorials here to practice hair. When I first got serious about drawing, I realized that hatching hair was my big weakness. I was too much of a perfectionist, accustomed to drawing every line exactly the same length, thickness, and darness (which is nice for shading but not for hair). I had a tense hand too. But with practice the hand learns to loosen up and just glide the lines down right where they need to be to show highlights and shadows. Now it's fun, challenging. The "Annie" in my gallery was the most fun I've had drawing hair so far, you might want to try her and observe carefully the lines that Brenda used to make the hair look realistic. By the way I love your gallery, especially the portraits. Looks to me like you did a nice job with hair in the portraits. -Mindy P.S. It's great to have you on my friend's list!

Carol,
That was so sweet of you! But I don't normally look back, I just start over and keep going. I guess I get that patience from all the years of doing cross-stitch (a type of needlepoint). You see in counted cross stitch if your mind wanders and you start the thread in the wrong spot, and an hour later you realize something doesn't match up.... you spend the next hour tearing out everything you just did. laugh.gif It's sort of the same with drawing, just shrug and start over, and hope that it'll turn out even nicer the second time around. I'm working on Clio again, and already done with the hair. If I didn't have my college work to worry about, I'd have her done tonight or tomorrow, but right now school comes first, so she'll be finished whenever it happens. Thanks again, it's amazing how generous you and everyone here at Drawspace are, to help keep everyone else motivated. Sorry I've sort of dropped from the "regulars" status, but I'll still be around. See-ya! -Mindy

Oh my goodness.. I tried the Cross stitching while I was sitting the Hospital when my family was ill.. I thought it would help pass the time .. Hospital Sitting is not easy.. Found out right quick .. That hobby was NOT for me.. I admire your patience !!
Good to have you back again Mindy !!

This is really sad. I'm sorry this happened to you. I'm ALWAYS really careful what I have sitting around my drawing table for just this reason. I never eat or drink around a drawing. I'd be devastated by something like this.

Hi~ Thank you for your sympathy, wink.gif I try to be careful as well, I have an 8 and 9 year old so I made myself a great space for drawing and it's downstairs to boot.. they are afraid to go down there. LOL

Actually I made my room after it happened so I think some little one was checking things out.

I'll chalk it up as lesson learned and start all over.

Thanks again! smile.gif

I've learnt my leason the hard way about keeping food and drink away from artwork.

I left a cup of cold coffee on my desk (right next to my sketchbook; art course-work I might add). I thought it would be fine to just leave it there, whilst I went down stairs for something...I was wrong. I came back up and it was knocked over. All of my sketches (and completed works) completely ruined. I didn't know who it was, and I settled on the idea that my sister had done it out of spite. laugh.gif A completely wrong accusation. Because later in the day...I found my cat with a coffee stained tail. laugh.gif

It was tragic! I never let the animals in my room anymore. laugh.gif
