Hi everybody smile.gif
I'm new... well not at all, I already posted here and there. First of all sorry for my bad and poor English.. I make a lot of mistakes tongue.gif

I just finished a portrait in c.p. ..
the subject is a Japanese singer and her name is Ayumi Hamasaki. I think that it's very difficult to create the skin with cp.. maybe mine it's too pale or not enough "smooth".
However that's the portrait.. and thanks for your future comments.
see ya smile.gif

I'm 24 years old smile.gif . well, I always draw but I just started to use colored pencils.. I think it's a very difficult medium.. I make so many mistakes sad.gif . Sometimes the skin it's too pale, sometimes the shadows are too dark, other times my draw isn't enough smooth.. dry.gif . Maybe I can't draw with colored pencils.
I'm not into manga and cartoons (well, I watch cartoons.. I like them but I'm not an expert tongue.gif ). I choose to draw an oriental girl because I wanted to try something different (different for me... she's the first Japanese that I draw).
I'm more into realism.. uhm.. It's not correct.. I try to be more on realism ehehe.. I'm still learning tongue.gif

That's another portrait.. you see... the skin it's too pale and the shadows too dark rolleyes.gif

.. and thanks for you comment.. smile.gif

Your drawings are lovely, but I do agree that your values need to be bumped up in the skin tones to provide realism. Your shadows aren't dark at all, but I think your colour choice for those shadows isn't quite right.

Your second drawing is good, but there needs to be more modeling of the girl's features and hair to provide definition. I'm not sure what reference you used to draw this, but it likely was lit from the front by a flash, which flattens features and doesn't provide much in the way of tones to work with, so you just render uniform skin tones. A whole thread in itself could be done on working with photographic references!

Coloured pencil is not so much difficult as a medium, but time consuming. I use cp a lot in my animal portraits and each drawing takes me a minimum of 20 hours to complete a small 9 x 12 image.

You need to build up layer after layer of colour to ensure that skin tones look realistic and in the same way as painting with watercolours or oils you need to mix your colours and have knowledge of colour theory and values, etc etc. Drawings should have a minimum of 3 layers of colour on each section and up to 10 or more to acheive the tones and colours that are needed.

Your drawings are great, and quite realistic, in the first one I realy like her hair but about shadows dont wory I see you have talent and with practise and some of the Brendas lessons you will master the shadows wink.gif In the second one I have only one remark, her hand ( the one without flower ) it looks litle too manly if you know what I meen. othewise everithing is great. smile.gif

P. S. Dont wory about your english we all suck a litle bit but it is important that we uderstand ich other. biggrin.gif

Ayumi rocks! I love her music =) Love the drawing, you did great. My comments for improvement would be: facial shading... I think it's cause there are no shadows to create cheakbones and eyesockets, and no real shadows around her lips. You got the hands nice and detailed though, so you've proven you can do it! biggrin.gif

As for your english... I'm native dutch and I always say: You can complain about my english mistakes if I can complain about your dutch mistakes ... so if anyone sais your english isn't good enough, just say their italian could be better as well cool.gif

Venus
Nightlight,
Hello I am Venus. Very nice to meet you. Have you learned the color chart for colored pencils? I just learned it in an art class I am taking and its alot easier when you know the secondary and complimentary colors in colored pencils. when you know this you know not to use BLACK as a darkening tool. Colored pencils is one of my main favroites in mediums. I will search for a color chart and send to you if you wish, Your pictures is awesome though. I really like it. Plus oreintal people are suppost to be pale I believe. cool.gif

Here is a good example I found surfing the internet....

http://www.mmwindowtoart.com/drawing/colorstudy2pencil.html

just copy and paste this into your search engine and you will see the aspects of coloured pencil that I was talking about. Hope I helped!!

I Agree with you 100% Venus

Hi Venus smile.gif , nice to meet you.
Your link is very helpful.. ehehe now I have something to study carefully.
Thanks smile.gif
Eric
Ooops! I don't know, but this welcome seemed to have slipped through me. I think I glanced through your gallery while at work and thought I sent a comment.

Anyway, I can't believe how hard you are on yourself. Have you not checked out all the Goth people hanging out at the local mall. Of course they won't be found sunning in the center court for fear that their pure white skin may tan. Well, I have to say that I can't believe you are complaining about being too light on your skin tones. They don't look sick to me! I only wish I could generate half the skin renditions you've done.

Truly outstanding work you are doing. I can't wait to watch you improve with more knowledge that you gain from this site. I hope you stick around a while and let us share in that transition. You can only get even better than you already are. Enjoy your art and don't be so critical with it. You are an amazing artist.

Your comments are really precious for me smile.gif .
Now i started a new drawing but this one is in b/w. I hope to not make a mess with the hair.. it's so difficult to draw tongue.gif
Eric
Why don't you post us a few WIP (Works in Progress) updates so we can see how you tackle one of these.

Eric
Nightlight
ok smile.gif
Can I use this topic?
eheh in the meanwhile i post my wip..

the neck seems too small but it's because I must draw hair around it smile.gif
Eric
Wow, Nightlight!

A super job already. Where did you start with this one? Did you do a basic outline, start with the eyes, or just lay down a basic skin tone with the highlights and eyes blank? That's the trouble I have is where to start with a drawing like this.

i love this its looking good and looks so soft biggrin.gif
Nightlight
Thanks woo smile.gif

I did a basic outline and after that I added more details to the eyes. Then I made the skin... this draw is an experiment.. I usually use circularism to make the shadows, but this time I tried a new (well, new for me tongue.gif ) technique. In fact I created the shadows with hatching and I smoothed them with a paintbrush smile.gif .
Venus
Nightlight...WOW...I only wish I could draw that well. You have an amazing talent!!! Keep up the good work.
Nightlight
thanks Venus blush.gif biggrin.gif
