These are my drawings of faces done on airplane tables, no ruler, measurement, etc just the eye, the mechanical pencil and my 5.5x8.5 inches sketchbook.

The last one is from imagination.

Hi Elena,
These are lovely sketches. I see you made good use of the time spent inflight. From the other threads, I can see you brought us many wonderful photos to use as reference for drawing challenges. You are very generous to provide these for us to "play" with. Thank you very much for thinking of us.
ElenaM
Thank you, Trish.I hope you will find inspiration and draw or sketch something you like from my pics.
Take a look at this. Peking Opera

That is great, you will appreciate this, I was listening to a cuban carribean jazz station in itunes, and then clicked on the Peking Opera, both were playing at the same time, talk about culture clash!

Very, very impressive.

Great drawing Elena, especially the shading and you are getting the features nearly perfect. biggrin.gif But, you should take my advice, and even if you don't have a ruler, you can use your pencil to gauge the angle of the face. It is normal for us artists to try to straighten the angle of the face while drawing the individual features at the correct angles. But this only causes the faces to be distorted.
ElenaM
Thanks everybody. I am pleased with my progress in portraits, really. But I am not a disciplined person so I do not pay attention to angles or strive to achive anything just draw and this makes me happy when I get close to the original without effort.
Bobby I know exactly what you mean but It's too early for me to be that good. I only have 1 year and a half in drawing. So I still make mistakes and still learn. Thanks so much for your advice. I know when I will be perfect with angles I would call myself an artist. Since then I just practice.
I forget to tell you that all chinese people on the plane were looking at my drawings, pilot included when he took a break and they were all thumb up. I felt very good, yet embarassed since i know i have a long way to go in drawing.

Bobby, your praise is music to my ears. I have no words to thank you for your encouragement and sound advice from your vast career in painting and portraiture.

Yesterday while my computer was at the clinic I drew something after a painting by persian artist Iman Maleki, portrait of a young man.
Again I let myself drifting away from measurements of any kind. I know it's very important to measure but I like to feel free. But i promise next time I will measure wink.gif .
So here it is the original and my drawing.
