Full Version: Weekly Drawing challenge Feb 17-24, 2008
Drawspace > General > General discussion
Pepzie
Okay so this is my week to be in charge of the drawing challenge! I hope you like the picture that I picked and that everyone will draw at least one picture biggrin.gif Remember the outcome of your drawing doesn't matter, just the fact that you tried cool.gif

All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate!

The goal of this thread is to enable and encourage individuals to practice their drawing skills, learn new techniques and have fun! If you just want to sketch that’s fine. If you want to create a complex, detailed drawing, that’s great too. You will get out of this what you want. The references used are from my own personal reference library of images that I have photographed and I release them here as not under copyright, meaning you can use them as you wish for drawing.

You will be challenged by some aspect of all references most likely as you all will have different strengths and weaknesses in your ability to translate the images to paper.

Reminder:

This is a DRAWING challenge. Therefore please confine your artistic endeavours to some form of drawing: graphite, coloured pencil, pen and ink or charcoal.

There is no ruling on what size your final drawing or sketch should be. Smaller, sketchbook sizes will provide a smaller file size which is easier for loading onto the thread.

If you would like assistance or advice, please ask for it and I will be more than willing to try to guide you.

This challenge will last for one week. At that time, all challenge drawings should be submitted to this thread.

I have offered 3-5 reference images to choose from. The images are also provided in greyscale. Seeing the images in black and white gives a better sense of basic values.

I have kept the images to simple shapes that still provide challenges. Block out your basic shapes first then work the details into them, rechecking proportion and measurement against other reference points in your drawing.

If you have an interest in hosting a challenge, please see the list in the pinned area of general discussions.

Here is a very pretty flower, that I just think looks amazing!
[attachmentid=9038][attachmentid=9039]
Me as a little kid.
[attachmentid=9040][attachmentid=9041]
My dog (Pepzie) In this pic it kind of looks like she has only one eye which is not the case wink.gif
[attachmentid=9042][attachmentid=9043]
This is my old furbee (I'm not sure if everyone know what they are, but basically it's a little "robot" with fur that kids use to play with) I found him when I was cleaning and just though he was super cute! Feel free to ignore the background if you want to...
[attachmentid=9044][attachmentid=9045]
This is a little sheep, with a photo in the back ground (which I though was kind of cool) but you don't have to draw the photo if you don't wanna tongue.gif

Now, get your drawing stuff out and draw a pretty little picture for me!!! smile.gif
airscapes
I think you need to resize those photos for the folks that are techno-challenged. sad.gif
800x600 would probably be large enough. I you are unable to do so, I can resize them and post them if you like. Let me know..
Thanks!
Firehorse_Australia
this is sooo exciting, such a WONDERFUL collection of references wub.gif .... thanks for them, now which one to try????? blink.gif wacko.gif

Although I know y'all disapprove of photoshop, I just had to play with copy and paste. tongue.gif

An extremely loose interpretation with magic marker and colored pencil, copy and pasted into a bouquet with photoshop.

Cool biggrin.gif I think it looks real amazing (I for one love photoshop, and really like that you can "change" stuff and fix details) anyway, I love the drawing smile.gif

Love your sheep, mmgalitz! And your flower, realbad! smile.gif
Brian David Dekter
Hi all.

beautiful pictures this week Pepzie....the little sheep almost looks like a Tribble from Star trek...

I admire all the drawings drawer 32 , Siksno, Marisa, and realbad.........and Marisa..... I love how you sketched in the girl in the background with a beautiful blue dress. smile.gif

Here is my quick attempt at Furbee....thanks for the challenge Pepzie.
Maire
Great pictures so far challenge people - drawer 32 , Siks, Marisa, and realbad.. That little sheep seems popular and done better than the one I am going to post. I am glad to see at least one beautiful flower emerging from the fur tongue.gif . I always thought furbees were evil so you'd better watch your friendly cartoon characters getting too close to this one Brian (cute but dangerous).

My daughter is always giving me sheep as she knows they make me laugh. So I gave the little challenge furball some company as he looked so lonely. No digital stuff, just plain old pencil.

Wow, Maire.. It's Shaun the Sheep.. I love Shaun. I don't know anyone else that knows who he is. Great job on him and all the sheep..

Great furbee, Bri-guy.. All the stuff is so cute. Beautiful flowers.. adorable sheep
Maire
Thanks Cyn.....I didn't know my sheep had a name. Which one is Shaun - the large one? He is black velvet with what looks like real sheepskin. I keep him around for moral support tongue.gif

Maire

This is my tribute to this week's challenge smile.gif

Yes, Shaun is the one with the tuft of wool on his head. laugh.gif
You can find 2 or 3 of his cartoons here.

Pepzie
Great work everyone smile.gif
The sheep seem to be the most popular one, but we see when the week ends witch picture that "won" the popularity contest ;-)
Orleanska really good with the background (and the sheep is real cute too)
Maire love that you mixed a couple things together and Brian David thanks for drawing furbee (If no one would have drawn him he would have been so upset) mmgalitz and realbad amazing drawings!!!

Now I just have to see if someone decides to draw me and my dog (wink, wink)

Great drawings every one!
Maire
Great work on the baby pic Lance, Paulette and Orleanska. I have been a bit under the weather this week and keeping sane by drawing, and I have to admit this baby was a challenge. I'm certainly not satisfied with it (no Pepzie, still not enough fat on the cheeks for one thing) but I'm not up to starting again so I will add my little Pepzie for this week.

[attachmentid=9091]

Orleanska- what a wonderful first portrait, congrats! wub.gif

Cyn- Thanks. Wow, that Shaun looks exactly like mine. The one I have is permanently sitting down, but still gets his legs tangled up occasionally. tongue.gif

I actually prefer images that are larger than 800x600. 800x600 should be a minimum to get enough detail to do a detailed drawing. If you're just sketching from a reference, then smaller is fine.

Just my preference....

mmgalitz
Thought I'd try out the pastel pencils I bought last month...
5 x 5 inch on medium weight drawing paper, 2 hrs
airscapes
When I first looked at the photos this week, they were very large. When I openend the last photo this is what I saw, and thought, what the heck?? But then I thought.. hey why not do this corner as the picture. I did NOT use my projector to get my reference line, so the poor kid don't even look like himself, but it was a real challenge drawing the base sketch with out aid. This was done on 67lb charcoal paper 8x10, vine, willow, compressed and white charcoal. Took me hours and hours and I am not very pleased... Stuck my thumb in the hair after it was done.. had to fix it and it is not a nice. Rubbed my sleeve across the right side frame and robe.. had to do it over. tryied to darken the eyes.. messed them up.. so I said DONE!

Here is my reference (last photo in the list croped)

My mess

Cool idea, well executed!
Pepzie
airscapes interesting effect (how strange with the pictures not appearing properly) I think the picture turned out real cool (to bad you had so much trouble doing it) wink.gif
mmgalitz nice with the colors biggrin.gif (I for one never draw with neither pastel or anything else color related when it come to drawing faces because it's just super hard or at least I think so blush.gif ) And Marie simply great work!! smile.gif and Lance500 like the colors, the picture is just so much more fun this way tongue.gif cool.gif
Firehorse_Australia
I have started but yet to finish, should hopefully post something in a few hours time, blush.gif
BUT
Had to say WOWser to all the works completed!!!!! wub.gif
That sheep is such a cutie and I loove the drawings!!! wub.gif biggrin.gif
hellenFq
This is my attempt on one of the pictures (I tried to make the little creature happier)
[attachmentid=9118]
I bought some oil pastels which I wanted to try

This drawing was more like playing .. I used oil pastels, graphite, charcoal and colored pencils biggrin.gif

I'me one of those special kids wacko.gif with special needs laugh.gif

I edited a little the reference photo in Corel Photo-Paintand this is the result:
[attachmentid=9119]
Pepzie
Firehorse_Australia great that you started a drawing (hopefully you post it even though my challenge week is over) and I agree with you everyone have done WOW good drawings cool.gif
hellenFq love the drawing, looks really real. And I'm glad you had fun doing it biggrin.gif

I think the most popular drawing was neither me wub.gif or the little sheep tongue.gif (and least popular was my dog, but I suspect that was because that picture had the suckiest resolution huh.gif rolleyes.gif mellow.gif )

Well anyway great work everyone!!! biggrin.gif smile.gif
